वरव्याजेन पशुतां याचितः स सुरैर्मखे 68.
He was requested by the gods, under the pretense of a boon, to become a sacrificial victim in a ritual.
पशुवत्स विशस्तस्तैः स्ववाक्याशनियन्त्रितः 68.
Like a sacrificial animal, he was slain by them, being bound by his own word.
तस्य सत्त्वविशुद्धस्य विशुद्धेन च कर्मणा 68.
Because of his pure nature and his virtuous deeds,
देवानामथ यक्षाणां सिद्धानां पवनाशिनाम् 68.
from him arose the gems of the gods, yakshas, siddhas, and those who subsist on air.
तेषां तु पततां वेगाद्विमानेन विहायसा 68.
As they fell swiftly from the sky in their flying vehicles,
महोदधौ सरिति वा पर्वते काननेऽपि वा 68.
they landed in the great ocean, in rivers, on mountains, or even in forests.
तेषु रक्षोविषव्यालव्याधिघ्नान्यघहानि च 68.
Among these, there are those that destroy demons, poisons, wild beasts, and diseases, and remove sin.
वज्रं मुक्तामणयः सपद्मरागाः समरकताः प्रोक्ताः 68.
Diamond, pearl, ruby, padmaraga, and emerald are said to be among them.
कर्केतनं सपुलकं रुधिराख्यसमन्वितं तथा स्फटिकम् 68.
Karketana, along with pulaka, and the one known as rudhira, as well as crystal,
आकारवर्णौ प्रथमं गुणदोषौ तत्फलं परीक्ष्य च 68.
First, their shape and color, then their qualities and flaws, and their effects should be examined.
कुलग्नेषूपजायन्ते यानि चोपहतेऽहनि 68.
Those that arise in families that are destroyed, or on inauspicious days,
परीक्षापरिशुद्धानां रत्नानां पृथिवीभुजा 68.
even if gems are purified by examination, kings
शास्त्रज्ञाः कुशलाश्चापि रत्नभाजः परीक्षकाः 68.
should have them assessed by those skilled in the science, experts, and experienced gem-appraisers.
महा प्रभावं विबुधैर्यस्यमाद्वज्रमुदाहृतम् 68.
The diamond, which is declared by the wise to have great power,
तस्यास्थिलेशो निपपात येषु भुवः प्रदेशेषु कथञ्चिदेव 68.
wherever even a fragment of it happened to fall upon the earth,
हैममातङ्गसौराष्ट्राः पौण्ड्रकालिङ्गकोशलाः 68.
were the regions of Hemamāṭaṅga, Saurāṣṭra, Pauṇḍra, Kaliṅga, and Kośala.
आताम्रा हिमशैलजाश्च शशिभा वेण्वातटीयाः स्मृताः सौवीरे त्वसिताब्जमेघसदृशास्ताम्राश्च सौराष्ट्रजाः 68.
Those from the Himalayas are coppery; those from the moon are said to be moon-like; those from the banks of the bamboo are remembered as Sauvira stones; those resembling dark lotuses and clouds, as well as coppery ones, are from Saurashtra.
अत्यर्थं लघु वर्णतश्च गुणवत्पार्श्वेषु सम्यक् समंरेखाबिन्दुकलङ्ककाकपदकत्रासादिभिर्वर्जितम् 68.
It should be extremely light in color and quality, with sides well-formed, evenly marked with lines, dots, spots, and free from defects such as crow's feet and other flaws.
वज्रेषु वर्णयुक्त्या देवानामपि विग्रहः प्रोक्तः 68.
By the arrangement of colors in vajras, even the forms of the gods are described.
हरितसितपीतपिंगश्यामास्ताम्राः स्वभावतो रुचिराः 68.
Green, white, yellow, tawny, dark, and coppery—by nature, these are pleasing.
विप्रस्य शङ्खकुमुदस्फटिकावदातः स्यात्क्षत्त्रियस्य शशबभ्रुविलोचनाभः 68.
For a Brahmin, it should be as pure as conch, lotus, or crystal; for a Kshatriya, it should resemble the color of a hare, brown, or the eye.
द्वौ वज्रवर्णौ पृथिवीपतीनां सद्भिः प्रदिष्टौ न तु सार्वजन्यौ 68.
Two vajra colors are prescribed by the wise for rulers of the earth, but they are not common to all people.
ईशत्वात्सर्ववर्णानां गुणवत्सार्ववर्णिकम् 68.
Because of the predominance of all colors, the one possessing all qualities is considered universal.
अधरोत्तरवृत्तया हि यादृक् स्याद्वर्णसङ्करः 68.
By the lower and upper forms, whatever color mixture occurs.
न च मार्गविभागमात्रवृत्त्या विदुषा वज्रपरिग्रहो विधेयः 68.
A wise person should not select a vajra merely by the division of paths or forms.
एकमपि यस्य श्रृङ्गं विदलितमवलोक्यते विशीर्णं वा 68.
If even one tip of it is seen to be split or broken,
स्फुटिताग्निविशीर्णश्रृङ्गदेशं मलवर्णैः पृषतैरुपेतमध्यम् 68.
If the tip is cracked by fire or broken, or if it is covered with stains and spots, it is considered mediocre.
यस्यैकदेशः क्षतजावभासो यद्वा भवेल्लोहितवर्णचित्रम् 68.
If any part shows a blood-like appearance, or is marked with red coloring,
कोट्यः पार्श्वनि धाराश्च षडष्टौ द्वादशेति च 68.
The edges, sides, and facets are said to be six, eight, or twelve.
षट्कोटि शुद्वममलं स्फुटतीक्ष्णधारं वर्णान्वितं लघु सुपार्श्वमपेतदोषम् 68.
A vajra with six facets, pure, spotless, with sharp, clear edges, possessing color, light, well-sided, and free from defects.
