सन्तोषं च तथा तुष्टिर्लोभं पुष्टिरसूयत 5.
Santoṣa and likewise Tuṣṭi, Lobha, and Puṣṭi were born.
बोधं बुद्धिस्तथा लज्जा विनयं वपुरात्मजम् 5.
Bodha, Buddhi, Lajjā, Vinaya, and Vapu, his own son—
सुखमृद्धिर्यशः कीर्त्तिरित्येते धर्मसूनवः 5.
Sukha, Mṛddhi, Yaśas, and Kīrti—these are the sons of Dharma.
ईजे कदाचिद्यज्ञेन हयमेधेन दक्षकः 5.
Once, Dakṣa performed a horse sacrifice.
भार्य्यभिः सहिताः सर्वे रुद्रं देवीं सतीं विना 5.
All, along with their wives, except for Satī, the goddess, Rudra's consort—
त्यक्ता देहं पुनर्जाता मेनायां तु हिमालयात् 5.
Having abandoned her body, she was born again as Menā's daughter from Himālaya.
कुमारश्चैव भृंगीशः क्रुद्धो रुद्रः प्रतापवान् ध्रुवस्यान्वयसम्भूतो मनुष्यस्त्वं भविष्यसि ।। 5.
Kumāra and Bhṛṅgīśa, the wrathful and mighty Rudra—born from Dhruva's line, you will become a human.
उत्तानपादादभवत्सुरुच्यामुत्तमः सुतः 6.
From Uttānapāda and Suruci, a son named Uttama was born.
मुनिप्रसादादाराध्य देवदेवं जनार्दनम् 6.
By the grace of a sage, having worshipped Janārdana, the god of gods—
तस्य प्राचीनवर्हिस्तु पुत्रस्तस्याप्युदारधीः 6.
His son was Prācīnavarhis, and his own son was noble-minded.
रिपोः पुत्रस्तथा श्रीमाँश्चाक्षुषः कीर्त्तितो मनुः 6.
The son of Ripu, named Śrīmān, is known as Cākṣuṣa Manu.
अंगस्य वेणः पुत्रस्तु नास्तिको धर्मवर्जितः 6.
Aṅga's son was Vena, who was an atheist and devoid of righteousness.
ऊरुं ममन्थुः पुत्रार्थे ततोऽस्य तनयोऽभवत् 6.
For the sake of a son, they churned his thigh, and from it a son was born to him.
निषादस्तेन वै जातो बिन्ध्यशैलनिवासकः 6.
From him was born Niṣāda, who dwelled in the Vindhya mountains.
तस्मात्तस्य सुतो जातो विष्णोर्मानसरूपधृक् 6.
From him was born a son who bore the mental likeness of Viṣṇu.
दुदोह पृथिवीं राजा प्रजानां जीवनाय हि 6.
The king milked the earth for the sustenance of the people.
प्राचीनबर्हिस्त्पुत्रः पृथिव्यामेकराड् बभौ 6.
Prācīnabarhis, the son of the earth, shone as the sole sovereign.
तस्मात्सुषाव सामुद्री दश प्राचीनबर्हिषः 6.
From him, the oceanic one, were born ten sons to Prācīnabarhis.
अपृथगधर्म्मचरणास्तेऽतप्यन्त महत्तपः 6.
They practiced the same righteous conduct and performed great austerities.
प्रजापतित्वं संप्राप्य भार्य्या तेषां च मारिष 6.
Having attained the status of progenitors, their wives, O Mārīṣa,
असृजन्मनसा दक्षः प्रजाः पूर्वं चतुर्विधाः 6.
Dakṣa first created, by his mind, four kinds of beings.
मैथुनेन ततः सृष्टिं कर्त्तुमैच्छत्प्रजापतिः 6.
Then the lord of creatures desired to create by sexual union.
तस्य पुत्रसहस्त्रं तु वैरण्यां समपद्यत 6.
A thousand sons were born to him from Vairiṇī.
दक्षपुत्रसहस्त्रं च तेषु नष्टेषु सृष्टवान् 6.
When those sons of Dakṣa were lost, he created another thousand.
दक्षः क्रुद्धः शशापाथ नारदं जन्म चाप्स्यसि 6.
Angry, Dakṣa then cursed Nārada, 'You will be born again.'
यज्ञे ध्वस्तेऽथ दक्षोऽपि शशापोग्रं महेश्वरम् 6.
When the sacrifice was destroyed, Dakṣa also fiercely cursed Maheśvara.
जन्मान्तरेऽपि वैरेण ते विनश्यन्ति शङ्कर ! असिक्न्यां (महिष्यां) जनयामास दक्षो दुहितरो ह्यथ ।। 6.
Even in another birth, out of enmity, they perish, O Śaṅkara! Then Dakṣa begot daughters from Asiknī, his queen.
षष्टिं कन्या रूपयुता द्वे चैवांगिरसे ददौ 6.
He gave sixty beautiful daughters, and two to Aṅgiras.
चतुर्दश कश्यपाय अष्टाविंशातिमिन्दवे 6.
Fourteen were given to Kaśyapa, and twenty-eight to the Moon.
मनोरमां भानुमतीं विशालां बहुदामथ 6.
Manoramā, Bhānumatī, Viśālā, and Bahudā were then bestowed.
