Thus ends the fifty-first chapter, entitled 'The Explanation of the Dharma of Giving,' in the section on conduct, in the first part of the Purva-khanda of the glorious Garuda Mahapurana.
Now, O twice-born, I shall explain the procedure for expiation.
These are five sinners, and the one who associates with them is the fifth.
A slayer of a Brahmin should build a hut in the forest and live there for twelve years.
He may enter blazing fire or immerse himself in water by his own will.
By giving food to a learned person, he removes the sin of Brahmin-slaying.
Or he may give all his possessions to a Brahmin who knows the Vedas.
When purified, having bathed three times daily and fasted for three nights, the twice-born is cleansed.
After bathing at the place where the skull is released, and likewise at Varanasi,
By drinking milk, ghee, or cow urine, he is freed from that sin.
Wearing bark garments, the twice-born should practice the vow of a Brahmin-slayer in the forest.
He should cover a woman with a heated, glowing iron object.
Or he may perform five or four Chandrayana fasts again.
He should undertake that vow for the purpose of removing that sin.
The proper giving of all one's possessions purifies from all sins.
Going to a sacred place, such as Gaya, destroys sin.
By feeding Brahmins, one is freed from all sins.
To Yama, Dharmaraja, Mrityu, and Antaka,
He should offer seven handfuls of water mixed with sesame to each.
Celibacy, sleeping on the ground, fasting, and worship of the twice-born.
Having observed a fast on the sixth day, with a concentrated mind, one worships the god during the bright fortnight.
On the eleventh day, remaining without food, one should duly worship Janardana.
Austerity, recitation, service at sacred fords, and worship of gods and Brahmins—
Even a man burdened with all sins, if he goes to holy places—
Whether he has slain a Brahmin, been ungrateful, or is tainted by great sins—
But a woman who is devoted to her husband, eager to serve him—
Just as Sita, renowned in the three worlds, was devoted to Rama—
One who bathes at Phalgu and other sacred fords attains the fruit of all righteous conduct.
Thus, in the glorious Garuda Mahapurana, in the Purva Khanda, in the section called Achara, the fifty-second chapter named 'The Explanation of Atonement' is concluded.
Thus, having heard of the eight treasures of Hari, Brahma spoke as follows:
