देवर्षोंस्तर्पयेद्धीमानुदकाञ्जलिभिः पितॄन् 50.
The wise should offer oblations to the divine sages and ancestors with handfuls of water.
प्राचीनावीती पित्र्ये तु तेन तीर्थेन भारत 50.
For ancestral rites, O Bhārata, one should use the prācīnāvītī posture with that sacred water.
स्वैर्मन्त्रैरर्चयेद्देवान्पुष्पैः पत्रैस्तथाम्बुभिः 50.
With one's own mantras, worship the gods with flowers, leaves, and water.
अन्यांश्चाभिमतान्देवान् भक्त्या चाक्रोधनो हरः ! 50.
One should also worship other desired gods with devotion, and Hara, who is free from anger.
आपो वा देवताः सर्वास्तेन सम्यक् समर्चिताः 50.
All waters are deities; thus, they are properly worshipped.
नमस्कारेण पुष्पाणि विन्यसेद्वै पृथक् पृथक् 50.
With salutations, one should place the flowers separately for each.
तस्मात्तत्रादिमध्यान्ते चेतसा धारयेद्धरिम् 50.
Therefore, at the beginning, middle, and end, one should hold Hari in the mind.
निवेदयेच्च आत्मानं विष्णवेऽमलतेजसे 50.
One should dedicate oneself to Viṣṇu, the pure radiance.
अप्रेते सशिरा वेतियजेत्वा पुष्पके हरिम् मानुषं ब्रह्मयज्ञं च पञ्च यज्ञान्समाचरेत् ।। 50.
After performing the rites for the ancestors and the gods, and worshipping Hari with flowers, one should also carry out the human and Brahma sacrifices, thus completing the five sacrifices.
यदि स्यात्तर्पणादर्वाग्ब्रह्मयज्ञं कुतो भवेत् 50.
If there is no offering of water for the ancestors, how can the Brahma sacrifice be accomplished?
वैश्वदेवस्तु कर्त्तव्यो देवयज्ञः स तु स्मृतः 50.
The Vaiśvadeva rite must indeed be performed; this is known as the sacrifice to the gods.
श्वभ्यश्च श्वपचेभ्यश्च पतितादिभ्य एव च 50.
To dogs, to those who eat dogs, and to the fallen and others as well—
एकं तु भोजयेद्विप्रं पितॄनुद्दिश्य सत्तमाः 50.
The excellent ones should feed one Brahmin, dedicating it to the ancestors.
उद्धृत्य वा यथाशक्ति किञ्चिदन्नं समाहितः 50.
Or, with collected mind, one should take out whatever food is possible, according to one's ability.
पूजयेदतिथिं नित्यं नमस्येदर्चयोद्द्विजम् 50.
One should always honor the guest, and respectfully worship the twice-born.
भिक्षामाहुर्ग्रासमात्रमन्नं तत्स्याच्चतुर्गुणम् 50.
What is called alms is just a mouthful of food; that should be four times as much.
गोदोहमात्रकालं वै प्रतीक्ष्यो ह्यतिथिः स्वयम् 50.
One should wait for the guest for the time it takes to milk a cow.
भिक्षां वै भिक्षवे दद्याद्विधिवद्ब्रह्यचारिणे 50.
One should give alms, as prescribed, to a mendicant who is devoted to Brahmacharya.
भुञ्जति बन्धुभिः सार्द्धं वाग्यतोऽन्नमकुत्सयन् 50.
He should eat together with his relatives, without speaking ill of the food.
भुञ्जते चेत्स मूढात्मा तिर्य्यग्योनिं च गच्छति 50.
If he eats alone, that deluded soul attains a lower birth among animals.
नाशयन्त्याशु पापानि देवानामर्चनं तथा 50.
By worshipping the gods, sins are quickly destroyed.
भुङ्क्ते स याति नरकान्त्सूंकरेष्वेव जायते 50.
If he eats (improperly), he goes to hell and is born among pigs.
अशौचं चैव संसर्गाच्छुद्धिः संसर्गवर्जनात् 50.
Impurity arises from contact, and purity from avoiding contact.
मृतेषु वाथ जातेषु ब्राह्मणानां द्विजोत्तम 50.
O best of twice-born, whether among the dead or the newborn, for Brahmins—
त्रिरात्रमौपनयनाद्दशरात्रमतः परम् 50.
After the investiture with the sacred thread, impurity lasts three nights; after that, ten nights.
शुध्येन्मासेन वै शूद्रो यतीनां नास्ति पातकम् 50.
A Śūdra is purified in a month; for ascetics, there is no sin.
अथातः संप्रवक्ष्यामि दानधर्ममनुत्तमम् 51.
Now, therefore, I shall expound the supreme duty of giving.
दानं तु कथितं तज्ज्ञैर्भुक्तिमुक्तिफलप्रदम् 51.
Giving, as declared by those who know, bestows the fruits of enjoyment and liberation.
अध्यापनं याजनं च वृत्तमाहुः प्रतिग्रहम् 51.
Teaching, officiating at sacrifices, subsistence, and receiving gifts are spoken of.
यद्दीयते तु पात्रेभ्यस्तद्दानं परिकीर्त्तितम् 51.
That which is given to worthy recipients is called true charity.
