प्रातः काले च मध्याह्ने नमस्कुर्य्याद्दिवाकरम् 50.
In the morning and at midday, one should bow to the sun.
प्रज्वाल्य वह्निं विधिवज्जुहुयाज्जातवेदसम् 50.
Having kindled the fire according to the prescribed method, one should offer oblations to Jātavedas.
प्राप्यानुज्ञां विशेषेण जुहुयाद्वा यथाविधि 50.
Having received special permission, one should perform the offering according to the prescribed method.
दैवतानि नमस्कुर्य्यादुपहारान्निवेदयेत् 50.
One should bow to the deities and present offerings of food.
वेदाभ्यासं ततः कुर्य्यात्प्रयत्नाच्छक्तितो द्विजः 50.
After that, the twice-born should diligently practice the recitation of the Vedas to the best of their ability.
अवेक्षेत च शास्त्राणि धर्मादीनि द्विजोत्तमः 50.
The excellent twice-born should examine the scriptures concerning dharma and other subjects.
उपयादीश्वरं चैव योगक्षेमप्रसिद्धये 50.
He should approach the Lord for the attainment of well-being and security.
ततो मध्याह्नसमये स्नानार्थं मृदमाहरेत् 50.
Then, at midday, he should collect clay for the purpose of bathing.
नदीषु देवखातेषु तडागेषु सरः सु च 50.
In rivers, sacred ponds, lakes, and pools,
पञ्च पिण्डाननुद्धृत्य स्नानं दुष्यन्ति नित्यशः 50.
Without removing the five lumps, bathing is always rendered impure.
अधश्च तिसृभिः क्षाल्यं पादौ षट्भिस्तथैव च 50.
The feet should be washed below with three, and likewise with six.
गोमयस्य प्रमाणं तु तेनाङ्गं लेपयेत्ततः 50.
He should apply the proper amount of cow dung to his limbs thereafter.
लेपयित्वा तु तीरस्थस्तल्लिङ्गैरेव मन्त्रतः 50.
After applying it, standing at the bank, he should recite the appropriate mantras for those marks.
स्नानकाले स्मरेद्विष्णमापो नारायणो यतः 50.
At the time of bathing, one should remember Vishnu, for the waters belong to Narayana.
आचान्तः पुनराचामेन्मन्त्रेणानेन मन्त्रवित् 50.
Having rinsed the mouth, one should rinse again with this mantra, if knowledgeable in mantras.
त्वं यज्ञस्त्वं वषट्कार आपो ज्योती रसोऽमृतम् 50.
You are the sacrifice, you are the vaṣaṭ-call, you are the waters, the light, the essence, the nectar.
सावित्रीं वा जपे द्विद्वांस्तथा चैवाघमर्षणम् 50.
Or he may recite the Sāvitrī twice, as well as the Aghamarṣaṇa hymn.
इदमापः प्रवहतव्याहृतिभिस्तथैव च 50.
These waters should flow, along with the sacred utterances.
अन्तर्जलमवाङ्मग्नो जपेत्त्रिरघमर्षणम् 50.
Immersed in water, facing downward, he should recite the Aghamarṣaṇa hymn three times.
आवर्त्तयेद्वा प्रणवं देवदेवं रमरेद्धरिम् 50.
Or he may repeat the Praṇava, and meditate on Hari, the Lord of Lords, delighting in Rama.
विन्यस्य मूर्ध्नि तत्तोयं मुच्यते सर्वपातकैः 50.
By placing that water upon the head, one is freed from all sins.
अथोपतिष्ठेदादित्यमूर्द्ध्वपुष्पान्विताञ्जलिम् 50.
Then, one should approach the Sun, with hands joined and adorned with flowers, held aloft.
उदुत्यं चित्रमित्येवं तच्चक्षुरिति मन्त्रतः 50.
While gazing at the rising Sun, one should recite the mantra: 'udutyaṃ citram' and 'taccakṣur'.
अन्यैः सौरैर्वैदिकैश्च गायत्त्रीं च ततो जपेत् 50.
Afterwards, one should recite other solar and Vedic mantras, as well as the Gāyatrī.
तिष्ठंश्च वीक्ष्यमाणोऽर्कं जपं कुर्य्यात्समाहितः 50.
Standing and looking at the Sun, one should perform the recitation with concentration.
कर्त्तव्या त्वक्षाला स्यादन्तरा तत्र सा स्मृता 50.
A cleansing of the eyes should be performed in between; this is remembered as proper.
अन्यथा च शुचौ भूम्यां दर्भेषु च समाहितः 50.
Otherwise, one should sit attentively on clean ground or on darbha grass.
आचम्य च यथाशास्त्रं शक्त्या स्वाध्यायमाचरेत् 50.
Having performed ācamana according to the scriptures, one should undertake self-study as able.
आदावोङ्कारमुच्चार्य्य नमोऽन्ते तर्पयामि च 50.
At the beginning, utter 'Om', and at the end, say 'namah' and offer oblations.
पितॄन्देवान्मुनीन् भक्त्या स्वसूत्रोक्तविधानतः ।। 50.
With devotion, offer oblations to ancestors, gods, and sages, according to the prescribed method of one's own lineage.
