ब्राह्मं तु मार्जनं मन्त्रैः कुशैः सोदकबिन्दुभिः 50.
The Brāhma bath is sprinkling with water using kuśa grass and mantras.
गवां हि रजसा प्रोक्तं वायव्यं स्नानमुत्तमम् 50.
The Vāyavya bath, considered excellent, is said to be performed with the dust of cows.
वारुणं चावगाहं च मानसं त्वात्मवेदनम् 50.
The Vāruṇa bath is immersion in water; the Mānasika is self-knowledge.
आत्मतीर्थमिति ख्यातं सेवितं ब्रह्मवादिभिः 50.
Known as the 'self-bathing,' it is practiced by those devoted to Brahman.
अपामार्गं च विल्वं च करवीरं च धावने 50.
Apāmārga, bilva, and karavīra are to be used for cleansing.
प्रक्षाल्य भुक्त्वा तज्जह्याच्छुचौ देशे समाहितः 50.
After washing and eating, one should discard the remains in a pure place, with focused mind.
आचम्य विधिवन्नित्यं पुनराचम्य वाग्यतः 50.16 आपोहिष्ठाव्याहृतिभिः सावित्र्या वारुणैः शुभैः 50.
Having sipped water according to the prescribed method, and again sipping with control of speech,
जप्त्वा जलाञ्जलिं दद्याद्भारस्करं प्रति तन्मनाः 50.
Reciting the appropriate mantras, one should offer water with cupped hands to Bhāraskara, with concentrated mind.
प्राणायामं ततः कृत्वा ध्यायेत्सन्ध्यामिति श्रुतिः 50.
Then, having performed prāṇāyāma, one should meditate upon Sandhyā, as declared in the scriptures.
ऐश्वरी केवला शक्तिस्तत्त्वत्रयसमुद्भवा 50.
The supreme power, arising solely from the three principles, is divine.
प्राङ्मुखः सततं विप्रः सन्ध्योपासनमाचरेत् 50.
A brāhmaṇa should always face east and perform the worship of Sandhyā.
यदन्यत्कुरुते किञ्चिन्न तस्य फलभाग्भवेत् 50.
Whatever else he does, he will not receive the fruit thereof.
उपास्य विधिवत्सन्ध्यां प्राप्ताः पूर्वपरां गतिम् 50.
Having properly worshipped Sandhyā, one attains both previous and future goals.
विहाय सन्ध्याप्रणतिं स याति नरकायुतम् 50.
Abandoning the reverence to Sandhyā, he goes to countless hells.
उपासितो भवेत्तेन देवो योगतनुः परः 50.
By worshipping thus, the supreme deity becomes manifest in the yogic form.
गायत्त्रीं वै जपेद्विद्वान्प्राङ्मुखः प्रयतः शुचिः 50.
The wise, facing east, pure and attentive, should recite the Gāyatrī.
मन्त्रैस्तु विविधैः सारैः ऋग्यजुःसामसंज्ञितैः 50.
With various essential mantras known as Ṛg, Yajur, and Sāma,
कुर्वीत प्रणतिं भूमौ मूर्धानमभिमन्त्रितः 50.
One should bow down to the earth, with the head sanctified by mantra.
निवेदयामि चात्मानं नमस्ते ज्ञानरूपिणे 50.
I offer myself and salute the one who is the embodiment of knowledge.
भूर्भुवः स्वस्त्वमोङ्कारः सर्वो रुद्रः सनातनः 50.
Bhūḥ, Bhuvaḥ, Svaḥ, Om—these are all Rudra, eternal.
प्रातः काले च मध्याह्ने नमस्कुर्य्याद्दिवाकरम् 50.
In the morning and at midday, one should bow to the sun.
प्रज्वाल्य वह्निं विधिवज्जुहुयाज्जातवेदसम् 50.
Having kindled the fire according to the prescribed method, one should offer oblations to Jātavedas.
प्राप्यानुज्ञां विशेषेण जुहुयाद्वा यथाविधि 50.
Having received special permission, one should perform the offering according to the prescribed method.
दैवतानि नमस्कुर्य्यादुपहारान्निवेदयेत् 50.
One should bow to the deities and present offerings of food.
वेदाभ्यासं ततः कुर्य्यात्प्रयत्नाच्छक्तितो द्विजः 50.
After that, the twice-born should diligently practice the recitation of the Vedas to the best of their ability.
अवेक्षेत च शास्त्राणि धर्मादीनि द्विजोत्तमः 50.
The excellent twice-born should examine the scriptures concerning dharma and other subjects.
उपयादीश्वरं चैव योगक्षेमप्रसिद्धये 50.
He should approach the Lord for the attainment of well-being and security.
ततो मध्याह्नसमये स्नानार्थं मृदमाहरेत् 50.
Then, at midday, he should collect clay for the purpose of bathing.
नदीषु देवखातेषु तडागेषु सरः सु च 50.
In rivers, sacred ponds, lakes, and pools,
पञ्च पिण्डाननुद्धृत्य स्नानं दुष्यन्ति नित्यशः 50.
Without removing the five lumps, bathing is always rendered impure.
