सत्यं भूतहितं वाक्यमस्तेयं स्वाग्रहं परम् 49.
Truth, speech for the welfare of beings, non-stealing, and supreme self-restraint.
नियमाः पञ्च सत्याद्या बाह्यमाभ्यन्तरं द्विधा 49.
The five observances, beginning with truth, are of two kinds: external and internal.
स्वाध्यायः स्यान्मन्त्रजापः प्रणिधानं हरेर्यजिः 49.
Self-study, recitation of mantras, and devotion to Hari as sacrifice.
मन्त्रध्यान तो गर्भो विपरीतो ह्यगर्भकः 49.
Meditation on the mantra is the 'womb'; the opposite is called 'without womb.'
कुम्भको निश्चलत्वाच्च रेचनाद्रेचकस्त्रिधा 49.
Kumbhaka is due to steadiness; from exhalation comes the threefold recaka.
षट्त्रिंशन्मात्रिकः श्रेष्ठः प्रत्याहारश्च रोधनम् 49.
The best withdrawal is of thirty-six measures; pratyahara is also restraint.
अहं ब्रह्मेत्यवस्थानं समाधिर्ब्रह्मणः स्थितिः 49.
The state of 'I am Brahman' is absorption; it is the abiding of Brahman.
ब्रह्म विज्ञानमानन्दः स तत्त्वमसि केवलम् 49.
Brahman is knowledge, bliss; that alone is the true essence—you are that.
अहम्मनोबुद्धिमहदहङ्कारादिवर्जितम् 49.
It is devoid of ego, mind, intellect, the great principle, and all such distinctions.
नित्यं शुद्धं बुद्धमुक्तं सत्यमानन्दमद्वयम् इति ध्यायन्विमुच्येत् ब्राह्मणो भवबन्धनात् ।। 49.
Eternally pure, awakened, liberated, true, blissful, and non-dual—meditating thus, a brāhmaṇa is freed from the bondage of existence.
इति श्रीगारुडे महापुराणे पूर्वखण्डे प्रथमांशाख्ये आचारकाण्डे वर्णआश्रमधर्मनिरूपणं नामैकोनपञ्चाशत्तमोध्यायः
Thus ends the forty-ninth chapter, entitled 'The Explanation of Duties of Varṇa and Āśrama,' in the Ācāra section of the First Part of the revered Garuḍa Mahāpurāṇa.
अहन्यहनि यः कुर्य्यात्क्रियां स ज्ञानमाप्नुयात् 50.
Whoever performs the prescribed acts daily attains knowledge.
चिन्तयेद्धृदि पद्मस्थमानन्दमजरं हरिम् 50.
One should contemplate in the heart the blissful, ageless Hari who dwells in the lotus.
स्त्रायान्नदीषु शुद्धासु शौचं कृत्वा यथाविधि 50.
After purifying oneself as prescribed in pure waters of rivers or ponds,
तस्मात्सर्वप्रयत्नेन प्रातः स्नानं समाचरेत् 50.
Therefore, with all effort, one should perform the morning bath.
सुखात्सुप्तस्य सततं लालाद्याः संस्त्रवन्ति हि 50.
From one who has slept comfortably, saliva and other secretions constantly flow.
अलक्ष्मीः कालकर्णो च दुः स्वप्नं दुर्विचिन्तितम् 50.
Misfortune, Kālakarna, bad dreams, and evil thoughts—
न च स्नानं विना पुंसां प्राशस्त्यं कर्म संस्मृतम् 50.
For men, no act is considered auspicious without bathing.
अशक्तावशिरस्कं तु स्नानमस्य विधीयते 50.
If one is unable, bathing by pouring water over the head is prescribed.
ब्राह्ममाग्नेयमुद्दिष्टं वायव्यं दिव्यमेव च 50.
Brāhma, Āgneya, Uddiṣṭa, Vāyavya, and Divya are the types of baths.
ब्राह्मं तु मार्जनं मन्त्रैः कुशैः सोदकबिन्दुभिः 50.
The Brāhma bath is sprinkling with water using kuśa grass and mantras.
गवां हि रजसा प्रोक्तं वायव्यं स्नानमुत्तमम् 50.
The Vāyavya bath, considered excellent, is said to be performed with the dust of cows.
वारुणं चावगाहं च मानसं त्वात्मवेदनम् 50.
The Vāruṇa bath is immersion in water; the Mānasika is self-knowledge.
आत्मतीर्थमिति ख्यातं सेवितं ब्रह्मवादिभिः 50.
Known as the 'self-bathing,' it is practiced by those devoted to Brahman.
अपामार्गं च विल्वं च करवीरं च धावने 50.
Apāmārga, bilva, and karavīra are to be used for cleansing.
प्रक्षाल्य भुक्त्वा तज्जह्याच्छुचौ देशे समाहितः 50.
After washing and eating, one should discard the remains in a pure place, with focused mind.
आचम्य विधिवन्नित्यं पुनराचम्य वाग्यतः 50.16 आपोहिष्ठाव्याहृतिभिः सावित्र्या वारुणैः शुभैः 50.
Having sipped water according to the prescribed method, and again sipping with control of speech,
जप्त्वा जलाञ्जलिं दद्याद्भारस्करं प्रति तन्मनाः 50.
Reciting the appropriate mantras, one should offer water with cupped hands to Bhāraskara, with concentrated mind.
प्राणायामं ततः कृत्वा ध्यायेत्सन्ध्यामिति श्रुतिः 50.
Then, having performed prāṇāyāma, one should meditate upon Sandhyā, as declared in the scriptures.
ऐश्वरी केवला शक्तिस्तत्त्वत्रयसमुद्भवा 50.
The supreme power, arising solely from the three principles, is divine.
