आचार्य्याः केचिदिच्छन्ति जातकर्माद्यनन्तरम् 48.
Some teachers desire it immediately after the birth-rite and so on.
आचार्य्योऽथ निरीक्ष्यापि नीराज्यमभिमन्त्रितम् 48.
Then the teacher, having examined it, should consecrate the clarified butter with mantras.
पञ्चपञ्चाहुतीर्हुत्वा आज्येन तदनन्तरम् 48.
Then, having offered five sets of five oblations with ghee—
स्वशास्त्रविहितैर्मन्त्रैः प्रणवेनाथ होमयेत् 48.
With mantras prescribed by his own scripture, and with the praṇava, he should perform the offering.
एवमुत्पादितो वह्निः सर्वकर्मसु सिद्धिदः 48.
Thus, the fire that is produced in this way grants success in all rites.
इन्द्रादीनां स्वमन्त्रैश्च तथाहुतिशतं शतम् 48.
To Indra and the others, with their own mantras, likewise a hundred oblations each.
स्वामाहुतिमथाज्येषु होता तत्कलशे न्यसेत् 48.
Then, the officiant should place his own oblation among the ghee offerings in that vessel.
आत्मानमेकतः कृत्वा ततः पूर्णां प्रदापयेत् 48.
Having made himself single-minded, then he should cause the full (offering) to be given.
भूतानां चैव देवानां नागानां च प्रयोगतः 48.
For beings, for gods, and for nāgas, according to the rite—
आज्यं तयोः सहकारि तत्प्रधानं यदङ्क(क्ष)योः 48.
Ghee is the assistant for both, and the principal when it is in their respective vessels.
ज्येष्ठसाम च भारुण्डं तन्नयामीति पश्चिमे 48.
And the Jyeṣṭha-sāman and Bhāruṇḍa are to be led in the western direction.
हुत्वा सहस्त्रमेकैकं देवं शिरसि कल्पयेत् 48.
Having offered a thousand oblations to each god, he should establish them on the head.
शिरः स्थानेषु जुहुयादाविशेच्चाप्यनुक्रमात् 48.
He should offer oblations at the places of the head, and also enter them in order.
स्वशास्त्रविहितैर्वापि गायत्त्र्या वाथ ते द्विजाः 48.
Or, O twice-born ones, he may use those prescribed in his own scriptures, or the Gāyatrī.
एवं होमविधिं कृत्वा न्यसेन्मन्त्रांस्तु देशिकः 48.
Having thus performed the rite of oblation, the teacher should place the mantras.
अग्न आयाहि जङ्घे द्वे शन्नोदेवीति जानुनी 48.
‘Agni, come!’—on both shanks; ‘May the gods grant us well-being’—on the knees.
दीर्घायुष्ट्वाय हृदये श्रीश्चते गलके न्यसेत् 48.
‘Long life to you’—on the heart; ‘Splendor to you’—on the throat, he should place.
मूर्द्धाभव तथा मूर्ध्नि आलग्नाद्धोममाचरेत् 48.
‘Become the head’—on the head likewise; after placing, he should perform the homa.
वेदपुण्याहशब्देन प्रासादानां प्रदक्षिणम् 48.
With the words ‘Veda’, ‘Auspicious day’, he should circumambulate the temples.
दिक्पालान्सह रत्नैश्च धातूनौषधयस्तथा 48.
He should also honor the guardians of the directions, along with gems, metals, and herbs.
न गर्भे स्थापयेद्देवं न गर्भं तु परित्यजेत् 48.
He should not install the deity in the womb, nor should he abandon the womb.
तिलस्य तुषमात्रं तु उत्तरं किञ्चिदानयेत् 48.
He should bring a small quantity of husk of sesame from the north.
देवस्य त्वा सवितुर्वः षड्भ्यो वै विन्यसेद्गुरुः 48.
The teacher should place the sixfold mantra of Savitṛ for the deity.
षड्भ्यो विन्यस्य सिद्धार्थं ध्रुवार्थैरभिमन्त्रयेत् 48.
After placing the sixfold, he should consecrate with the mantras for success and stability.
दीपधूपसुगन्धैश्च नैवेद्यैश्च प्रपूजयेत् 48.
He should worship with lamps, incense, fragrant substances, and offerings of food.
पात्रं वस्त्रयुगं छत्रं तथा दिव्याङ्गुलीयकम् 48.
A vessel, a pair of garments, an umbrella, and a divine ring as well.
चतुर्थी जुहुयात्पश्चाद्यजमानः समाहितः 48.
Afterwards, the sacrificer, with concentration, should offer the fourth oblation.
निष्क्रम्य बहिराचार्य्यो दिक्पालानां बलिं हरेत् 48.
The teacher, having gone outside, should offer the bali to the guardians of the directions.
यागान्ते कपिलां दद्यादाचार्य्याय च चामरम् 48.
At the end of the sacrifice, he should give a tawny cow and a fly-whisk to the teacher.
व्यजनं ग्रामवस्त्रादीन्सोपस्कारं सुमण्डपम् यजमानो विमुक्तः स्यात्स्थापकस्य प्रसादतः ।। 48.
A fan, village-cloth, and other accessories, along with a well-adorned pavilion; the sacrificer is freed by the favor of the installer.
