The aśvattha, plakṣa, and banyan trees are in the east; the udumbara is also there. When worshipped, it removes obstacles for the palace and the house.
Thus, in the glorious Garuda Mahapurana, in the first section of the Purva-khanda, in the conduct section, is the forty-sixth chapter named 'The Characteristics of Vastu Measurement.'
Now I will describe the characteristics of palaces; listen to this, O Shaunaka.
It should be quadrangular, with four doors, corresponding to the number of the sun.
The thigh should be equal to the upper field; half the thigh should be twice as much.
It should be made in three parts, or again in five parts.
Divide the summit into four parts, and construct the altar enclosure in three parts.
Alternatively, make the base level and divide it into sixteen parts.
The height of the walls should be measured as one fourth of the total.
The height of the summit should be twice the measured height of the walls.
In the four directions, the exit should likewise be understood by the wise.
Taking one part, the exit should again be planned accordingly.
This general description has been given for the characteristics of a palace.
The perimeter should be twice as much all around, O Shaunaka, without fail.
The summit is said to be twice the height of the leg, O Shaunaka.
The exit has been described; the rest should be as previously stated.
Make the tip like the altar, and the door should be one eighth part.
In the middle of the pedestal, as with the door, the rest should be hollow.
The leg should be equal in breadth, and the summit should be twice as high.
This is the measurement for the pavilion; I will now describe another form.
Thus, with the measurement made, the outer portion is determined.
The inner chamber should be made twice as large; the measurement here is by the rim.
I will now explain the measurement and origin of palaces according to their proportions.
There are five types of palaces, including Triviṣṭapa; all are of various origins.
One is circular, another is elongated, and the fifth here is octagonal.
