ब्रह्मणः कुर्वतः सृष्टिं जज्ञिरे मानसाः सुताः 4.
As Brahma was creating, his mind-born sons were produced.
सिसृक्षुरम्भांस्येतानि स्वमात्मानमपूजयत् 4.
Desiring to create these waters, he worshipped his own self.
सिसृक्षेर्जघनात्पूर्वमसुरा जज्ञिरे ततः 4.
Desiring creation, first from his lower part, the asuras were born.
तमोमात्रा तनुस्त्यक्ता शङ्कराभूद्विभावरी 4.
Having abandoned the body composed of tamas, night arose, resembling Shankara.
सत्त्वोद्रिक्तास्तु मुखतः संभूता ब्रह्मणो हर ! 4.
Those with abundant sattva were born from Brahma’s mouth, O Hara!
ततो हि बलिनो रात्रावसुरा देवता दिवा 4.
Then, indeed, the powerful asuras are of the night, and the gods are of the day.
सा चोत्सृष्टाभवत्सन्ध्या दिननक्तान्तरस्थितिः 4.
And that Sandhyā was created, existing between day and night.
सा त्यक्ता चाभवज्ज्योत्स्त्रा प्राक्सन्ध्या याभिधीयते 4.
When she was abandoned, she became the luminous one called Prāk-sandhyā.
रजोमात्रां तनु गृह्य क्षुदभूत्कोप एव च 4.
Taking only a portion of rajas, she became thin, and from hunger, anger arose.
यक्षाख्या यक्षणाज्ज्ञेयाः सर्पा वै केशसर्पणात् 4.
Those known as Yakṣas are to be understood as born from her yawning, and serpents from the shaking of her hair.
गायन्तो जज्ञिरे वाचं गन्धर्वाप्सरसश्च ये 4.
Those who are Gandharvas and Apsarases, singing, were born as speech.
सृष्टवानुदराद्राश्च पार्श्वाभ्यां च प्रजापतिः 4.
The Lord of creatures created the Rākṣasas from his abdomen and others from his sides.
ओषध्यः फलमूलिन्यो रोमभ्यस्तस्य जज्ञिरे 4.
Plants bearing fruits and roots were born from his hairs.
एतान् ग्राम्यान्पशून्प्राहुरारण्यांश्च निबोध मे 4.
These are called domestic animals; now hear from me about the wild ones.
औदकाः पशवः षष्ठाः सप्तमाश्च सरीसृपाः 4.
The sixth are aquatic animals, and the seventh are reptiles.
आस्याद्वै ब्राह्मणा जाता बाहुभ्यां क्षत्त्रियाः स्मृताः 4.
From his mouth were born the Brāhmaṇas, and from his arms are said to be the Kṣatriyas.
ब्रह्मलोको ब्राह्मणानां शाक्रः क्षत्त्रियजन्मनाम् 4.
The world of Brahmā is for Brāhmaṇas, and the world of Indra for those born as Kṣatriyas.
ब्रह्मचारिव्रतस्थानां ब्रह्मलोकः प्रजायते 4.
For those who observe the vow of the student, the world of Brahmā is attained.
स्थानं सप्तऋषीणां च तथैव वनवासिनाम् 4.
So also is the abode of the seven sages and of those who dwell in the forest.
कृत्वेहामुत्रसंस्थानं प्रजासर्गं तु मानसम् 5.
Having described the existence here and hereafter, now the mental creation of beings is told.
धर्मं रुद्रं मनुं चैव सनकं च सनातनम् 5.
Dharma, Rudra, Manu, and also Sanaka the eternal one.
मरीचिमत्र्यङ्गिरसौ पुलस्त्यं पुलहं क्रतुम् 5.
Marīci, Atri, Aṅgiras, Pulastya, Pulaha, and Kratu.
अग्निष्वात्तांश्च कव्यादानाज्यपांश्च सुकालिनः 5.
The Agniṣvāttas, the Kavyādhas, and the Ajyapās, all of good times.
चतुरो मूर्त्तियुक्तांश्च अंगुष्ठाद्दक्षमीश्वरम् 5.
And the four endowed with form, and from the thumb, the lord Dakṣa.
तस्यां तु जनयामास दक्षो दुहितरः शुभाः 5.
In her, Daksha begot auspicious daughters.
रुद्र पुत्रा बभूवुर्हि असंख्याता महाबलाः 5.
Rudra's sons were indeed countless and of great might.
भृगोर्धाताविधातारौ जनयामास सा शुभा 5.
That auspicious one gave birth to Dhata and Vidhata from Bhrigu.
तस्यां वै जनयामास बलोन्मादौ हरिः स्वयम् 5.
In her, Hari himself begot Bala and Unmada.
धाताविधात्रोस्ते भार्य्ये तयोर्जातौ सुतावुभौ 5.
Dhata and Vidhata had wives, and to them were born two sons.
पत्नी मरीचेः सम्भूतिः पौर्णमासमसूयत 5.
Sambhuti, the wife of Marichi, gave birth to Paurnamasa.
