Once there was Hiraṇyākṣa, son of Kashyapa and Diti; and Sanaka, due to a curse of speech, became the second gatekeeper.
Born in the race of demons, he became a thorn to the gods, powerful, known as Sanjiva and Vijaya, a great devotee of Hari, the supreme lord.
Hiraṇyākṣa himself was a demon, a reviler of devotees of Hari; such was Hiraṇyākṣa, who became intent on performing austerities.
Then his mother, the goddess Diti, spoke to Hiraṇyākṣa: Diti said: My dear son, you are greatly fortunate; do not undertake austerities for eight years.
Do not give me sorrow, for who will care for me? I cannot live even for a moment without you; truly, life is not possible for me.
Do not perform austerities, O greatly fortunate one, for the sake of my life. Thus addressed by his mother, Vijaya, compelled, spoke as follows.
Hiraṇyākṣa said to his mother: Abandon attachment and devote yourself to worship of Vishnu; the affection for me, your son, which has grown, brings both happiness and sorrow in this world and the next.
O mother, as long as you direct affection toward me, you will experience endless suffering; and just as you see me as your son, I see you as my mother.
In my father, whom I revere, I have the thought of fatherhood; in him whom you call husband, you have the thought of a husband, but this is mistaken. For Hari alone is truly the creator of all, and Murari is the one who always protects.
Therefore, O mother, Hari alone is always the true mother; the motherhood of others is only figurative. If you are truly the primary mother, then tell me, who is the mother of Drona and the others?
If you are truly the primary mother, then tell me, who is the mother of Brahma and the others? For Hari, the eternal Vishnu, is always the source of the world, and always the father.
If the father is always the true father, then tell me, who protects the child in the womb? If the role of protector belongs to the mother and father, then tell me, who protected the tortoise and others?
If the role of protector belongs to the mother and father, then tell me, who protected Kripa and the others? Therefore, O mother, know that Vishnu, the ancient one, is the true savior of all sons from hell.
O beautiful one, I am not the deliverer from hell, nor is the husband, nor the father and others; not the mother, nor the younger brother and the rest. Vishnu alone is the universal savior; there is no other.
Cut through my illusion with the sword of knowledge, and with devotion, remember Hari. The remembrance of Vishnu's name, which arises from devotion, O mother, always removes sin.
Whoever remembers the name of Vishnu with devotion will become a remover of sin. This body is rare in the realm of action, and among all, worship of Vishnu's form is most important.
Your life has passed in vain; quickly worship the feet of Srinivasa. Thus instructing his mother, the noble son, possessed by the influence of the demon, became an ascetic.
Having pleased the four-faced one with devotion, he attained invulnerability; then, embracing the earth with his hands, that great demon carried it away.
In the region called Śrīmuṣṭa, Hari appeared as Varaha, the ancient Vishnu. Breaking through the ocean, the great soul entered the netherworld where the earth was situated.
Placing the earth on the tip of his own tusk, he departed; then the chief of demons arrived. Striking him at the base of the ear, he killed him and restored the earth as before.
Having placed the noble elephants of the directions, Vishnu, as Varaha, remained in Śrīmuṣṭa. Then Hari, with devotion, contemplated his own human body.
Where will those who worship me be found? Where will I show them compassion? Thus Hari pondered, and then, O Sukanya, from Vaikuntha, he placed the immovable Shesha on Indra's shoulder, and himself descended to earth as the lord of the earth.
Beginning from the bank of Suvarṇamukharī, the bearer of Garuda's banner, up to the end of Śrīkṛṣṇaveṇī, established that mountain.
At the tail of the mountain is Śrīśaila; in the middle is known Ahobala; and the face is the field of Śrīnivāsa, so it is declared.
With little austerity, one's desired goal is attained in Ahobala. All holy places, including the Ganges, are indeed present here.
Whoever serves this place daily, endowed with faith and devotion, seeking knowledge attains knowledge, seeking wealth attains wealth.
One desiring a son attains a son; a king attains a kingdom. Whatever a mortal desires, he attains it in every way.
Because whatever is thought of is accomplished, they call it the wish-fulfilling jewel. Due to the abundance of lakes, there is a lake here in the mountain, and those who know the truth call it Puṣkara mountain.
Because it is in the form of a golden vessel, they know it as Kanakādri. Since it came from Vaikuntha, it is remembered as Vaikuntha mountain.
Endowed with nectar and prosperity, it is remembered as Vyaṅkaṭādri. As long as the greatness of Vyaṅkaṭeśa's mountain exists, so long does its glory endure.
