He is the original cause of the gods; from him, even Brahma and others are not complete. By Lakshmi's grace and long-earned merit, Virincha (Brahma) is born, possessing appropriate and full qualities.
Virincha is not full of qualities like Lakshmi, nor is Lakshmi full of qualities like Vishnu. Nor is Bharati full like Vayu, nor is Varuni full like Shesha.
Indeed, except for Pārvatī with Rudra, none are ever truly complete in form; having reflected thus, she performed austerities on the bank of the Yamunā.
At that time, I went to the bank of the Yamunā with Pārtha for hunting, O bird; seeing her engaged in austerity there, I spoke to my friend Pārtha.
"O Pārtha, quickly go near the maiden and ask her why she is performing austerity here." Thus instructed, he went near her and promptly inquired about the reason.
Having returned, Phālguna told me the entire account while by my side; then, after a short while, I duly took her hand in marriage there.
Because of her constant austerity and devotion to me, I am always well pleased with her, O king of birds; dwelling ever in perfect bliss with her, what greater happiness could there be for me?
I accepted her for marriage out of compassion, not for pleasure, O best of the heroic; likewise, I will tell you of Lakṣmaṇā’s form and the reason for her hand being taken, O lord of birds.
Listen attentively as I speak this secret; between a true disciple and teacher, there is no secrecy.
Śrī Kṛṣṇa said: O king of birds, Lakṣmaṇā, who in a previous creation was the daughter of Vahnivedas the knower of sacrifice, is renowned as Sulakṣmaṇā because she is endowed with auspicious marks.
Just as Lakṣmī is complete with auspicious marks, just as Hari is complete with marks, just as Vāyu is complete with marks, and just as Gāyatrī is complete with marks,
So too, just as Rudra and others are filled with marks, Lakṣmaṇā is also complete; but in virtue and righteousness, there is some difference, and thus the name is given according to the qualities considered.
Therefore, all call her Lakṣmaṇā; now hear, O king of birds, the marks from the beginning—there are thirty-two auspicious marks in Nārāyaṇa, the Lord of Lakṣmī, who is full of all virtues.
They do indeed exist, O king of birds; I will tell them in order—whoever hears them from me attains liberation always: a man who is seven spans tall, with limbs measuring ninety-six fingers, four-armed, and with sharp teeth.
All these, when found together, are said by the noble to be the marks of Hari Viṣṇu; a face that is smooth, round, and well-formed is said by the noble to be the second mark.
One whose jaw is not prominent, O lord of birds, is said by the noble to be the third mark; whose teeth are sharp and fine, that is said by the noble to be the fourth mark.
One whose lower lip is reddish, O lord of birds, is said by the noble to be the fifth mark; whose hands are very red, O king of birds, is said by the noble to be the sixth mark.
One whose nails are red and beautiful is said by the noble to be the seventh mark; one whose cheeks are reddish, O lord of birds, is said by the noble to be the eighth mark.
On whose palm the lines of conch, discus, and others appear, that is said by the noble to be the ninth mark; whose abdomen is slender, well-formed, and marked with three folds, that is beautiful—
That is said by the noble to be the tenth mark; the eleventh is said to be a deep navel; whose two thighs are fleshy, that is said by the noble to be the twelfth mark.
The wise declare the thirteenth mark as a long and broad waist; and if one has a prominent scrotum above, that is said to be the fourteenth mark.
They say the fifteenth mark is an elevated phallus; and, O king of birds, the sixteenth mark is a reddish sole of the foot.
Sunken ankles are called the seventeenth mark; a graceful neck is the eighteenth; a lotus-like, deeply red skin is the nineteenth; and arms and knees are the twentieth mark.
A broad chest is the twenty-first mark; lion-like shoulders are the twenty-second; a delicate mouth is the twenty-third; and clear, pleasant eyes are the twenty-fourth mark.
A short and soft genital is the twenty-fifth mark, O Indra; equal feet, waist, knees, and thighs are the twenty-sixth mark.
Equal hands and ears together are said by the wise to be the thirty-second mark; indeed, thirty-two marks are found in Mukunda and in Ramā.
Thirty-two marks are also spoken of in Brahmā and Bhāratī, and this is truth; likewise, there is no doubt in the wheel-bearing one. Thus, always make your determination, I say.
Even Lakṣmī could not fully reach the end of a single mark of Viṣṇu; therefore, the experts always declare Hari to be endowed with infinite marks.
Lakṣmī knows the mark according to her own form, O king of birds, but Bhāratī, by her own marks, is said to possess hundreds of qualities greater, and so does Brahmā.
Therefore, O king of birds, do not always make judgments of equality in marks among the gods; Rudra and others are said to have twenty-eight marks, lacking the mark of the third eye.
