Those who conceal the truths out of secrecy, their destination is always the son of the sun. Those who always inspire delight in the sections of dharma and karma are ever praiseworthy.
Those who recite the Purana for a fee, their destination is always the son of the sun. Those who listen to the Bhagavata Purana for a fee truly grasp the essence of Hari's scriptures.
Those who study the Vedas for a fee, their destination is always the son of the sun. Those who are content with wealth obtained by chance are always worthy here.
Those who are excessively greedy in acquiring wealth have no right to the Bhagavata. Knowing that Hari alone is eternally present as the inner ruler, there is no other lord.
Those who always contemplate thus, Vishnu provides their welfare and security. For true Vaishnavas, there is no misfortune, nor is there any doubt arising from ignorance.
Hari gives the result according to one's actions, whether auspicious or inauspicious. Therefore, one should not strive for wealth, but should act for the sake of Hari's truth.
Therefore, after bathing, reciting a divine mantra, and offering the garland and sandal paste that adorned Viṣṇu, one should, being pure, have the Bhāgavata Purāṇa recited, even if one is all-knowing, and this should be done always.
According to one's actions, there will be acquisition of wealth, mastery of the Vedas, and thorough study of the scriptures; but to listen with utmost devotion to Viṣṇu is rare and difficult to attain.
By great devotion, one should relish the essence of the Bhāgavata, which is difficult to experience in the mortal world; having tasted that Bhāgavata Purāṇa, being filled with tears of joy is also rare.
Hearing the decisive understanding of the truths and retaining them is said by the noble ones to be extremely difficult; and after hearing and retaining the truths, to conquer desire and anger is also difficult.
After hearing and retaining the truths, to remain steadfast in yoga is likewise difficult and rare.
After hearing and retaining the truths, to conquer desire and anger is difficult; even those purified by knowledge here always act with some doubt due to these faults.
Therefore, I will always engage in listening to sacred stories; there is no doubt about this. Thus, having firmly resolved to desire the name of Hari, I fixed my mind on listening. Having done so, I left my body on earth and was born again.
O bird, to reside in the womb of Vasudeva's sister, in the body named Sumitrā, Mitravindā was born.
By hearing, Mitravindā attained Hari as her friend; therefore, she became known by the name Mitravindā.
At her svayaṃvara, Mitravindā, the beautiful one among the kings, cast her garland upon me, O lord of birds; having shaken off all the kings, we reached the city, O lord of birds.
Śrī Kṛṣṇa said: O lord of birds, I will also tell you about the birth of Kālindī. The Sun, named Vivasvān, had a daughter named Kālindī.
She was known as Kālindī, O Indra among birds, and is remembered as the younger sister of Yamunā. Desiring to become Kṛṣṇa's wife, she performed excellent austerities.
Austerity is said to be reflection and discernment of the truths; repentance for previously committed sins is also called austerity.
Austerity called prāya is said to be control of the mind; it is called prāyaścitta, expiation, but not shaving the head, O lord of birds.
Hear this, O lord of birds: that which is accompanied by repentance is true; previously, no divine mantra was recited, and Mukunda was always tormented by the fire of suffering.
The nectar of Hari's name was not remembered, nor were the faults of Hari always remembered; nor was the nectar of Hari's true nature remembered, nor were the stories of the fickle world properly heard.
The lotus feet of Hari were not worshipped, though sons, friends, and others were well honored; the lotus feet of Hari were not saluted, though the feet of friends were greatly honored.
The form of Hari, covered with curling locks and surrounded by incense smoke, was not seen; sons and others were cherished, but your form, O enemy of Mura, was not cherished.
My son and friends were adorned with beautiful ornaments, but not cherished; all sins are removed. I have not eaten the food offered to Hari, nor have I partaken of six-flavored meals in the house of friends.
Fragrant flowers were not offered to you, O enemy of Mura; they were given to sons and friends. I am afflicted among sons and friends; when will I behold your face, O Mukunda?
I have eaten non-Vaishnava food, such as drumstick greens and others, and food not offered, nor sanctified. My tongue is burned by such forbidden things; when will I see your face, O Mukunda?
My body has not been purified by worship with the eight-syllable mantra, nor by divine pilgrimage to Vishnu's shrines, nor by circumambulation of conch-bearing holy places. O enemy of Mura, when will I see your face, O Mukunda?
My body has not been adorned with fragrant flowers, nor with ornaments and garments offered to you. It is burned by the faults of non-Vaishnavas, by smeared scents and other impurities; when, O Mukunda, will I be uplifted?
My feet are burned, O Vāsudeva, and do not walk the path to Hari's holy places. My eyes are burned, and never behold your divine form, O Lord.
