When will they, with a mind of renunciation, abandon these things? I do not know—thus he wept deeply. These fools strive with utmost care for sense objects, seeking gain.
For the sake of sense enjoyment, they abandon wealth and other possessions, being completely attached to sense objects. Deluded by your māyā, their intellect lost, O Universal Form, when will you release them?
Remembering and forgetting the māyā of Vāsudeva, Aurva wept, his limbs trembling with fear. Enduring great hardship in worldly life, they take to misery, abandoning their own true purpose.
Through great distress, they acquire wealth and possessions, yet all, being of most sinful conduct, abandon the hard-earned riches and goods like cattle, all in vain.
Even when a worthy recipient appears, they never give up anything, deluded by the māyā of Murāri. The wise say their lives are wasted—how have they been lost? Thus he wept deeply.
Their lives have thus gone to waste; seeing their youth and certainty, death, standing on their shoulders, laughs, O Kṛṣṇa, O Viṣṇu, but those with deluded minds do not know this.
My house should last a hundred years; my sons should live a hundred years as well. I too should live a hundred years in happiness, and my virtuous wife should remain with me.
I have cows, always full of good milk; my friends are truly joyful. I will give my son for a bride, and my daughter for marriage, as is proper.
I will give my daughter in marriage among the worthy, or wealth to the wealthy, always. The Lord Vāsudeva, seeing and not seeing these who are empty of true vision, always laughs.
I will not listen to stories; my fortune will not be lost. I will not always worship Hari; the loss of sons and others will not happen.
At each appointed time, Hari, named by destiny, bestows fruits; Vāsudeva is the giver of all. Seeing such ignorant people, Aurva, devoted solely to Vāsudeva, wept.
Therefore, Aurva took on the form of Rudra, O king of birds, always instructed in the teachings of Krishna. When Sati, daughter of Daksha, at Daksha's sacrifice, abandoned her body, O king of birds—
She was reborn as Menakā's daughter, of Himavat; then Rudra received the name Aurva. Having declared, 'Let him be of upward-flowing seed,' he indeed became so.
When the great-souled Rudra took the hand of Himavat's maiden in marriage, he became exceedingly passionate with her; thus Rudra acquired the name 'Para.'
Sadāśiva and others, ten brothers of Rudra, the son of Sumitra, and three sons of Hauhiṇi—these are equal at the time of liberation and creation, but are lesser by hundreds of qualities compared to those two.
Garuda said: Declare the determination of bliss, Krishna, ocean of perfect compassion, so that it may be discerned for the sake of the wise, and likewise for me.
Speak to your disciple with compassion, always uplifting me. O Krishna, whose desires are fulfilled, what longing remains for you, O Lord?
Thus addressed by the great-souled king of birds, Hrishikesha, Krishna, lotus-eyed and gracious, spoke with kindness.
Śrī Krishna said: From Gāyatrī comes Śatānanda; from the Creator, Ekānanda. Such is Śatānanda, renowned as belonging to Brahmā.
From Śeṣa comes Śatānanda, O best of birds, from Sarasvatī; Ekānanda is to be known as from Bhāratī, O son of Vinatā.
Thus, the determination of bliss is always to be understood, O bird. All has been spoken by me; what else do you wish to hear?
Śrī Garuḍa Mahāpurāṇa 19 Garuda said: You have stated, Krishna, Govinda, that Brahmāṇī and Bhāratī both surpass Rudra by a hundredfold, O best among gods.
I have heard from Viriñci up to Umā, and also that lacking infinite portions was declared by Viriñci, O lord of the gods.
You have stated, Krishna, Mādhava, that lacking a thousand portions applies, and having considered all the former ones, O Hari, O Lord.
Regarding knowledge, bliss, strength, and so on, up to Vāyu, lacking a thousand portions applies to knowledge and so forth, O Maheśvara.
Declare the determination, Govinda; you are omniscient, there is no doubt. Thus addressed by Garuda, Vāsudeva spoke with certainty.
Śrī Krishna said: Considering the lack of portions of bliss, O lord of birds, this is the yoga of the higher and higher ones, thus it is clear.
In measure, a hundredfold, in bliss, due to clarity, infinite qualities are declared by Brahmā.
The power multiplied a thousandfold is stirred by the wind; just as in bliss, so in knowledge, and in devotion to Vishnu, strength is supreme.
All qualities, declared in sequence, are a hundredfold greater; and in Bharati, knowledge, happiness, and devotion are a hundredfold stronger.
