After Jaya and the others, Brahmā created Vallā and other deities of action; after a hundred years, he created the vehicle of Śiva.
After the deities of action, thirty years later, Brahmā created Parjanya, the lord of mantras and machines.
After Parjanya, ten years later, Brahmā produced Puṣkara, the lord of the essence of action.
Thus, by my grace, O King of Birds, Brahmā created in this way; knowing thus, one attains liberation, never otherwise, by any means.
Śrī Garuḍa said: Tell me, O Hari, about your incarnations, and also about Lakṣmī and the gods; explain the distinctions of qualities, for your devoted disciple observing vows.
Śrī Kṛṣṇa said: The Blessed Lord, who is the original form, infinite, independent, full of all qualities, ancient, complete in form, and my very self, is never found among others, O wise one.
His foot is complete, the sole of his foot is complete, his nails are complete, his waist and neck are complete; his thighs are complete, his belly is complete, and even having obtained completeness, his chest is likewise complete.
His shoulders are perfectly complete, all his arms are complete, his hair, beard, and teeth are complete; his body hair is complete, and so are the pores of his hair, and likewise his head.
His testicles are complete, the hair on them is complete, his armpits, eyes, and ears—all these are complete; what more can I say of Hari's original form, when every part of his body is wholly complete?
Just as each single hair and its root is complete, so indeed is he, for he alone is complete; he alone is the creator of all, he alone is the enjoyer, and he alone partakes of the essence.
Hari does not partake of what is without essence; he partakes only of the essence. Hear, O King of Birds, I will explain: the essence of grapes and sugarcane, the essence of coconut, the essence of mango, and the essence of jackfruit.
The essence of orange, the essence of betel, the essence of date, the essence of banana fruit—Nārāyaṇa, ever compassionate and devoted to his devotees, always takes the essence in the form of the seed.
The essence of betel, the essence of khadira, the essence of flowers, the essence of sandalwood, the essence of wheat, the essence of barley, the essence of black gram, and the essence of deer musk—
Likewise, the pure essence of rice, the essence of nivāra rice, the essence of śyāmāka millet, and the essence of pure grains—
The essences of all prohibited vegetables, as well as the essences of prohibited salts, are all accepted by Viṣṇu with supreme reverence—the essence of food, and the essence of what is to be eaten and enjoyed.
The essence of soup, the essence of superior rice, the essence of milk, the essence of curd and buttermilk, the essence of ghee, the essence of cream, and even the essence of mustard—Viṣṇu accepts all these essences.
The essence of black pepper, the essence of cumin, and the essence of sacrificial ghee-cooked food; the essence of food cooked in oil and fried, the essence of jaggery, and the essence of fresh butter—
The essence of clove, the essence of sugar, and so forth—Vāsudeva partakes of these essences. The Lord of Lakṣmī, the indweller of all worlds, ever does so by his own command.
Now hear also, O best of disciples, about the essences left as remnants, and the portions of the great-souled Lord of the earth. Thus, those deluded devotees of Vāsudeva—what need is there to speak of Viṣṇu’s devotees in the world?
Blessed are those who partake of the essences; for them, there is no increase of suffering. But those who, neglecting the Vaiśvadeva offering, eat improperly—know them to be consumed by the anxiety of food.
I shall declare the distinction in the Vaiśvadeva rite, O king of birds, which is not to be told elsewhere, O wise one. Those who, in giving to the Sun and others, do not offer to Hari who dwells within the wind—
They are always to be known as partakers of the essences; therefore, Viṣṇu alone, the great soul, is the enjoyer of the essence-portions, not the enjoyer of all. Yet, being of unobstructed power, he indeed enjoys all.
Now I shall declare other essences, O king of birds; listen to this secret with utmost reverence. Grapes and the like are entirely devoid of essence; substances corrupted by time or by nature are to be known as impure.
After being overripe, or after four days, or likewise the jambu fruit—these are to be known as devoid of essence and impure.
After a month, O lord of birds, jackfruit is considered devoid of essence; after six months, O lord of birds, dates are regarded as bitter and devoid of essence.
Fresh, purified coconut, O master, after it bursts open, and after a day and night, is declared to be devoid of essence.
Dried coconut, and likewise dates, after a fortnight, and mango after a fortnight, are declared to be devoid of essence.
After a year, O lord of birds, areca nut is said to be so; after a ghaṭikā (about 24 minutes), O lord of birds, betel leaf is declared devoid of essence.
After a yāma (three hours), cooked rice, soup, milk-rice, as well as cooked and boiled food, O lord of birds, are declared to be devoid of essence.
After three fortnights, O lord of birds, food cooked in oil is thus considered; after four yāmas, food cooked in ghee is declared devoid of essence.
