अष्टोत्तरशतं कुर्य्यात्पञ्चाशत्पञ्चविंशतिम् 42.
One should make one hundred and eight, fifty, or twenty-five.
चतुरङ्गुलान्तराः स्युर्ग्रन्थिनामानि च क्रमात् 42.
The knots should be spaced four finger-widths apart, and named in order.
जया च विजया रुद्रा अजिता च सदाशिवा 42.
Jaya, Vijaya, Rudra, Ajita, and Sadashiva.
रञ्जयेत्कुंकुमाद्यैस्तु कुर्य्याद्गन्धैः पवित्रकम् 42.
One should color the sacred thread with kumkum and similar substances, and prepare it with fragrances.
क्षीरादिभिश्च संस्थाप्य लिङ्गं गन्धादिभिर्यजेत् 42.
Establishing the linga with milk and other offerings, one should worship it with fragrances and similar items.
पुष्पं गन्धयुतं दद्यान्मूलेनेशानगोचरे 42.
One should offer a flower scented with fragrance at the root, within the domain of Ishana.
मृत्तिकां पश्चिमे दद्याद्दक्षिणे भस्म भूतयः 42.
One should place clay in the west, ashes in the south, and the elements.
वायव्यां सर्षपं दद्यात्कवचेन वृषध्वज 42.
One should offer mustard seeds in the northwest, and with a protective mantra, to the bull-bannered one.
होमं कृत्वाग्नये दत्त्वा दद्याद्भूतबलिं तथा 42.
After performing the homa, offering to Agni, one should also give offerings to the spirits.
प्रातस्त्वां पूजयिष्यामि अत्र सन्निहितो भव 42.16 मन्त्रितानि पवित्राणि स्थापयेद्देवपार्श्वतः 42.
In the morning, I shall worship you; be present here. One should place the consecrated sacred threads beside the deity.
ललाटस्थं विश्वरूपं ध्यात्वात्मानं प्रपूजयेत् 42.
Meditating on the universal form situated on the forehead, one should worship oneself.
संहितामन्त्रितान्येव धूपितानि समर्पयेत् 42.
One should offer only those sacred threads which have been consecrated with the Samhita mantras and fumigated.
आत्मतत्त्वात्मकं पश्चाद्देवकाख्यं ततोऽर्चयेत् ॐ हीं(हीः) विद्यातत्त्वाय नमः ।। 42.
Afterwards, worship the principle called Devaka, which is of the nature of the true self, with the mantra: Om hīṃ (or hīḥ), obeisance to the principle of knowledge.
ॐ हां (हौः) आत्मतत्त्वाय नमः कालात्मना त्वया देव यदॄष्टं मामके विधौ ।। 42.
Om hāṃ (or hauḥ), obeisance to the principle of the self; O God, whatever has been seen by you as the soul of time in my ritual—
कृतं क्लिष्टं समुत्सृष्टं हुतं गुप्तं च यत्कृतम् 42.
Whatever has been done, done with difficulty, abandoned, offered, or kept secret—
पूरयपूरय मखव्रतं तन्नियमेश्वराय सर्वतत्त्वात्मकाय सर्वकारणपालिताय ॐ हां हीं हूं हैं हौं शिवाय नमः ।। 42.
Fulfill, fulfill the sacrificial vow; to the Lord of that observance, who is the essence of all principles, who is protected by all causes: Om hāṃ hīṃ hūṃ haiṃ hauṃ, obeisance to Śiva.
पूर्वैरनेन यो दद्यात्पवित्राणां चतुष्टयम् 42.
By this, one who gives the four purifying threads as done by the ancients—
बलिं दत्त्वा द्विजान् भोज्य चण्डं प्राच्यै विसर्जयेत् ।। 42.
Having given the offering to the twice-born, and food, let him dismiss the fierce one to the east.
इति श्रीगारुडे महापुराणे पूर्वखण्डे प्रथमांशाख्ये आचारकाण्डे शिवपवित्रारोपणं नाम द्विचत्वारिंशोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the forty-second chapter, named 'The Placing of the Śiva-Pavitra,' in the conduct section of the first part of the glorious Garuḍa Mahāpurāṇa.
पवित्रारोपणं वक्ष्ये भुक्तिमुक्तिप्रदं हरेः 43.
I shall explain the placing of the pavitra, which bestows enjoyment and liberation, as taught by Hari.
विष्णुश्च तेषां देवानां ध्वजं ग्रैवेयकं ददौ 43.
Viṣṇu gave to those gods a banner and a neck-ornament.
विष्णूक्ते ह्यब्रवीन्नागो वासुकेरनुजस्तदा 43.
Then, at Viṣṇu's command, the serpent, the younger brother of Vāsuki, spoke.
ग्रैवेयं हरिदत्तं तु मन्नाम्ना ख्यातिमेष्यति 43.
The neck-ornament given by Hari will become famous by my name.
प्रावृट्काले तु ये मर्त्त्या नार्चिष्यन्ति पवित्रकैः 43.
Those mortals who do not worship with pavitras during the rainy season—
तस्मात्सर्वेषु देवेषु पवित्रारोपणं क्रमात् 43.
Therefore, the placing of the pavitra should be performed in order for all the gods.
द्वादश्यां विष्णवे कार्य्यं शुक्ले कृष्णेऽथ वा हर 43.
On the twelfth day, it should be done for Viṣṇu, whether in the bright or dark fortnight, O Hara.
विष्णवे वृद्धिकार्य्ये च गुरोरागमने तथा 43.
For Viṣṇu, it should be done at the time of increase, and also upon the arrival of the teacher.
कौशेयं पट्टसूत्रं वा कार्पासं क्षौममेव वा 43.
Silk, cloth-thread, or cotton, or linen may be used.
वैश्यानां चीरणं क्षौमं शूद्राणां शणवल्कजम् 43.
For Vaiśyas, linen; for Śūdras, cloth made of hemp bark.
ब्राह्मण्या कर्त्तितं सूत्रं त्रिगुणं त्रिगुणीकृतम् 43.
For a Brāhmaṇa woman, a thread that is cut, threefold, and made threefold.
