Garuda Purana

ॐ अर्कासनाय नमः एतास्तु पूजयेन्मध्ये ह्रन्मंत्राञ्छृणु शङ्कर अनेनावाहनं कुर्य्यात्स्थापनं सन्निधापनम् 39.

'Om, obeisance to Arkāsana.' These are to be worshipped in the center. Listen, O Śaṅkara, to the Hraṃ mantras. With these, one should perform invocation, installation, and establishment.

मुद्राया दर्शनं रुद्र मूलमन्त्रेण वा हर एकचक्ररथारूढं द्विबाहुं धृतपङ्कजम् ।। 39.

By showing the mudrā, O Rudra, or with the root mantra, O Hara, one should visualize him mounted on a single-wheeled chariot, two-armed, holding a lotus.

एवं ध्यायेत्सदा सूर्य्यं मूलमन्त्रं श्रृणुष्व च 39.

In this way, one should always meditate on Sūrya. Now listen to the root mantra.

वारत्रयं पद्ममुद्रां बिम्बमुद्रां च दर्शयेत् ॐ अर्काय शिरसे स्वाहा ॐ हुं कवचाय हुं ॐ वः अस्त्राय फडिति ।। 39.

For three days, one should display the lotus mudrā and the disc mudrā: 'Om, to Arkā, for the head, svāhā.' 'Om huṃ, for the armor, huṃ.' 'Om vaḥ, for the missile, phaṭ.'

आग्नेय्यामथवैशान्यां नैर्ऋत्यामर्चयेद्धर 39.

In the southeast, or in the northwest, or in the southwest, one should worship Hara.

दिस्वस्त्रं पूजयेद्रुद्र सोमं तु श्वेतवर्णकम् 39.

In the directions, one should worship Rudra with the missile, and Soma, who is white in color.

दक्षिणे पूजयेद्रुद्र पतिवर्णं गुरुं यजेत् 39.

In the south, Rudra should be worshipped, and the preceptor, who is of the same color, should be honored.

रक्तमङ्गारकं चैव आग्नेये पूजयेद्धर 39.

One should worship Mars, who is red like burning charcoal, in the southeast direction.

राहुं वायव्यदेशे तु नन्द्यावर्त्तनिभिं हर 39.

One should worship Rahu in the northwest direction, with a vessel resembling a Nandyavarta.

एभिर्मन्त्रैर्महादेव तच्छृणुष्व च शङ्कर ।। 39.

With these mantras, O great god, listen also, O Shankara.

ॐ सों सोमाय नमः ॐ बृं बृहस्पतये नमः ॐ अं अंगारकाय नमः ॐ रं राहवे नमः 39.

Om soṃ, obeisance to Soma; Om bṛṃ, obeisance to Brihaspati; Om aṃ, obeisance to Angaraka; Om raṃ, obeisance to Rahu.

पाद्यादीन्मूलमन्त्रेण दत्त्वा सूर्य्याय शङ्कर 39.

Having offered water for washing the feet and other items with the root mantra, to Surya, O Shankara,

जप्त्वा चाष्टसहस्त्रं तु तच्च तस्मै समर्पयेत् 39.

And having recited it eight thousand times, one should then offer it to him.

ॐ तेजश्चण्डाय हुं फट् स्वधा स्वाहा पौषट् 39.

Om tejaścaṇḍāya huṃ phaṭ svadhā svāhā pauṣaṭ.

तिलतण्डुलसंयुक्तं रक्तचन्दनचर्चितम् 39.

Mixed with sesame and rice, and anointed with red sandalwood.

कृत्वा शिरसि तत्पात्रं जानुभ्यामवनिं गतः 39.

Having placed that vessel on the head, one should go to the ground on the knees.

गणं गुरून्प्रपूज्याथ सर्वान्देवानन्प्रपूजयेत् ॐ अं गुरुभ्यो नमः ।। 39.

Having first worshipped the group of teachers, then one should worship all the gods: Om aṃ, obeisance to the teachers.

सूर्य्यस्य कथिता पूजा कृत्वैतां विष्णुलोकभाक् ।। 39.

Thus the worship of Surya has been described; having performed this, one attains the world of Vishnu.

इति श्रीगारुडे महापुराणे पूर्वखण्डे प्रथमांशाख्ये आचारकाण्डे सूर्यार्चनप्रकारो नामैकोनचत्वारिंशोऽध्यायः

Thus ends the forty-ninth chapter named 'The Method of Worshipping Surya' in the Achara section of the first part of the glorious Garuda Mahapurana.

माहेश्वरीं च मे पूजां वद शङ्खगदाधर 40.

O bearer of the conch and discus, tell me also about the worship of Maheshvari.

श्रृणु माहेश्वरीं पूजां कथ्यमानां वृषध्वज 40.

Hear the worship of Maheshvari as it is being described, O bull-bannered one.

न्यासं कृत्वा मण्डले वै पूजयच्चे महेश्वरम् 40.

Having performed the nyasa in the mandala, one should then worship Maheshvara.

ॐ हां शिवासनदेवता आगच्छतेति 40.

Om hāṃ, O deity of Shiva's seat, come.

ॐ हां गणपतये नमः ॐ हां नन्दिने नमः ॐ हां गङ्गायै नमः ॐ हां महाकलायै नमः 40.

Om hāṃ, obeisance to Ganapati; Om hāṃ, obeisance to Nandi; Om hāṃ, obeisance to Ganga; Om hāṃ, obeisance to Mahakala.

एते द्वारे प्रपूज्या वै स्नानगन्धादिभिर्हर ॐ हां गुरुभ्यो नमः ॐ हां अनन्ताय नमः ॐ हां ज्ञानाय नमः ॐ हां ऐश्वर्याय नमः ॐ हां अज्ञानाय नमः ॐ हां अनैश्वर्य्याय नमः ॐ हां अधश्छन्दाय नमः ॐ हां कर्णिकायै नमः ॐ हां ज्येष्ठायै नमः ॐ काल्यै नमः ॐ बलप्रमथिन्यै नमः ॐ हां मनोन्मन्यै नमः ॐ हां हौं हं शिवमूर्त्तये नमः ॐ हां हीं हौं शिवाय नमः ॐ शिरसे नमः ॐ हैं कवचाय नमः ॐ हः अस्त्राय नमः 40.

These should be worshipped at the doors with bath, fragrance, and so on, O Hara. Om hāṃ, obeisance to the teachers; Om hāṃ, obeisance to Ananta; Om hāṃ, obeisance to Knowledge; Om hāṃ, obeisance to Sovereignty; Om hāṃ, obeisance to Ignorance; Om hāṃ, obeisance to Non-sovereignty; Om hāṃ, obeisance to Adhaschanda; Om hāṃ, obeisance to Karnika; Om hāṃ, obeisance to Jyeshtha; Om, obeisance to Kali; Om, obeisance to Balapramathini; Om hāṃ, obeisance to Manonmani; Om hāṃ hauṃ haṃ, obeisance to the form of Shiva; Om hāṃ hīṃ hauṃ, obeisance to Shiva; Om, obeisance to the head; Om haiṃ, obeisance to the armor; Om haḥ, obeisance to the weapon.

ॐ हां सिद्ध्यै नमः ॐ हां विद्युतायै नमः ॐ हां बोधायै नमः ॐ हां स्वधायै नमः 40.

Om, Hām, obeisance for accomplishment. Om, Hām, obeisance to the lightning. Om, Hām, obeisance to awakening. Om, Hām, obeisance to Svadhā.

सत्यस्याष्टौ कला ज्ञेयाः पूज्याः पूर्वादिषु स्थिताः ।। 40.

Know that the eight aspects of Truth are to be revered, established from the beginning.

ॐ हां वामदेवाय नमः ॐ हां रक्षायै नमः ॐ हां कन्यायै नमः ॐ हां जनन्यै नमः ॐ हां वृद्ध्यै नमः ॐ रा(धा) त्र्यै नमः ॐ हां मोहिन्यै नमः वामदेवकला ज्ञेयास्त्रयो दश वृषध्वज ।। 40.

Om, Hām, obeisance to Vāmadeva. Om, Hām, obeisance to protection. Om, Hām, obeisance to the maiden. Om, Hām, obeisance to the mother. Om, Hām, obeisance to growth. Om, Rā(dhā), obeisance to the three. Om, Hām, obeisance to Mohinī. Know that the aspects of Vāmadeva are thirteen, O bearer of the bull.

ॐ हां तत्पुरुषाय नमः ॐ हां प्रतिष्ठायै नमः ॐ हां शान्त्यै नमः 40.

Om, Hām, obeisance to Tatpuruṣa. Om, Hām, obeisance to establishment. Om, Hām, obeisance to peace.
