After performing the prescribed rites, one should recite the sacred mantra while walking in a circle around the place of worship, and then offer it there. This, O bearer of the bull-banner, is to be done using the root-mantra of the deity. The mantras are invoked thus: Om hām—obeisance to the heart; Om hūm—obeisance to the crest; Om haum—obeisance to the three eyes; Om—obeisance to Śrī; Om—obeisance to Padmā; Om—obeisance to Gadā; Om—obeisance to Kaustubha; Om—obeisance to the wearer of yellow garments; Om—obeisance to Musala; Om—obeisance to Aṅkuśa; Om—obeisance to Śara; Om—obeisance to Nārada; Om—obeisance to the Bhāgavatas; Om—obeisance to the supreme teachers; Om—obeisance to Agni, lord of brilliance, with his vehicle and retinue; Om—obeisance to Nirṛti, lord of the Rākṣasas, with his vehicle and retinue; Om—obeisance to Vāyu, lord of life, with his vehicle and retinue; Om—obeisance to Īśāna, lord of knowledge, with his vehicle and retinue; Om—obeisance to Brahmā, lord of the worlds, with his vehicle and retinue; Om—obeisance to Śakti, huṃ phaṭ; Om—obeisance to Khaḍga, huṃ phaṭ; Om—obeisance to Dhvaja, huṃ phaṭ; Om—obeisance to Triśūla, huṃ phaṭ; Om—obeisance to Padma, huṃ phaṭ. With these mantras, O Mahādeva, men worship the limbs and other aspects of the deity. And with this hymn, one should praise the imperishable Supreme Self: Obeisance to Viṣṇu, to Vāsudeva, and to the sustainer of existence; obeisance to the lord of the gods and to the lord of sacrifices; obeisance to the victorious one among all the gods, the all-pervading great soul; obeisance to the overseer of the worlds, who acts for the welfare of all beings; repeated obeisance to the bestower of boons, to the peaceful one, to the most excellent. Having thus praised, one should meditate in one’s own heart on the imperishable form of Brahman. Or, whoever recites the root-mantra, that person attains Hari. This is the supreme, most secret mystery, bestowing both enjoyment and liberation. Whoever hears it or has it recited will go to Viṣṇu’s world. Then, Mahādeva inquires, “Tell me about the worship of the five principles, O bearer of conch, discus, and mace!” Śaṅkara, steadfast in vows, is answered: “I will explain to you the worship of the five principles. Listen, O Mahādeva; it is pure and destroys the effects of the Kali age. Vāsudeva is eternal, pure, all-pervading, and stainless. Viṣṇu, who grants grace to the worlds, is the destroyer of all evil. Likewise, he abides in the form of Pradyumna, known as Aniruddha. Hear the mantras that designate these, O bearer of the bull: Om, āṃ, salutations to Saṃkarṣaṇa; Om, salutations to Aniruddha. Five mantras have been declared, which are the designations of the gods for you. Now I shall explain the auspicious worship of the five principles. First, one should bathe; after bathing, perform the twilight ritual. Having sipped water, the wise person should sit, adopting the desired posture. Making the seat firm and general, then one should produce the ritual vessel. Vāsudeva, Lord of the universe, clad in yellow silk garments, is to be meditated upon in the lotus of one’s own heart. Then, Pradyumna, Aniruddha, and the glorious Nārāyaṇa are contemplated. Afterwards, one should contemplate and perform the ritual placement for both hands. With the mantras for the limbs, O Mahādeva, hear these: Om īṃ, salutations to the head; Om aiṃ, salutations to the armor; Om aḥ, salutations to the weapon, phaṭ. Om, salutations to Acyuta, with all his retinue; Om, salutations to the Creator; Om, salutations to the Tortoise; Om, salutations to the Earth; Om, salutations to Dharma; Om, salutations to Detachment; Om, salutations to Ignorance; Om, aṃ, salutations to the solar orb; Om, vaṃ, salutations to the fire orb; Om, salutations to Pāñcajanya; Om, salutations to the mace; Om, salutations to fortune; Om, salutations to nourishment; Om, salutations to power; Om, salutations to Indra; Om, salutations to Yama; Om, salutations to Varuṇa; Om, salutations to Soma; Om, salutations to Ananta; Om, salutations to Viṣvaksena. These mantras have been declared to you, O Rudra, in summary. Om, salutations to Padma; having meditated upon oneself as Vāsudeva and also the Supreme Lord, afterwards one should worship the seat, having invoked it according to the proper method. One should first worship Garuḍa, O Śaṅkara, for Vāsudeva. Dharma, knowledge, detachment, and sovereignty are to be placed in the eastern direction. In the center of the three circles, the seat is described as being established. In the pericarp, one should worship Vāsudeva, the Supreme Lord. And, O Śaṅkara, the energies of the Lord of gods are to be worshipped, beginning from the east. Below, one should worship the serpent, and above, the wise should worship Brahmā. Thus, the sacred process of worship is revealed, step by step, for those who seek to honor the Supreme Lord and the five divine principles, ensuring purity, auspiciousness, and liberation.
