O auspicious one, listen to the sacred teachings on healing and protection as spoken by Hari. He began by describing remedies for ulcers, diseases, and foul-smelling wounds: shankhapushpi, vacha, soma, brahmi, and brahmasuvarchala, when applied, bring relief and healing. Further, equal parts of abhaya, guduchi, atarushaka, and vakuchi, cooked well with clarified butter—one prastha in measure—form a potent medicine. The juice of kantakari, mixed equally with milk, is known as Brahmi-ghrita. This supreme remedy enhances memory and intellect. Agnimantha, vacha, vasa, pippali, honey, and rock salt, used for seven nights, are praised by the kinnaras for their effectiveness. A combination of apamarga, guduchi, vacha, kushta, shatavari, shankhapushpi, abhaya, ghee, and vidanga, taken together, enables a person to retain eight hundred verses within three days. Vacha, when consumed with water, milk, or ghee for a month, bestows wisdom and the power of retention. If one pala of vacha mixed with milk is drunk during a lunar or solar eclipse, great intelligence is instantly granted. Water boiled with bhunimba, nimba, triphala, parpata, patoli, mustaka, and vasa destroys diseases. For boils and bleeding, the fruit of kataka, shankha, rock salt, tryushana, and vacha are especially effective. Phenī, rasanjana, honey, vidanga, and manashila, made into a collyrium, destroy cataract, darkness, and film in the eyes. Two prasthas of mashaka, decocted in a drona of water and reduced to a quarter, then cooked with one prastha of oil, form a healing preparation. Adding one adhaka of sour gruel and pounded punarnava, gokshura, rock salt, tryushana, and vacha, strengthens its potency. Salt, suradaru, manjistha, and kantakarika, when used nasally or as a drink, remove even severe ear pain. Anointing with two palas of rock salt, shunthi, and the five kinds of chitraka cures deafness and all diseases. Five prasthas of sauvira and one prastha of oil, cooked together, cure bleeding, abnormal taste, spleen disorders, and all vata ailments. Udumbara, vata, plaksha, two jambus, arjuna, pippali, kadamba, palasha, lodhra, and tinduka, along with madhuka, amra, sarja, badara, padmaka flower, shirisha seed, and kataka, when prepared as a decoction and applied with oil, heal even long-standing wounds. Hari continued: Onion, cumin, kushta, ashwagandha, ajamoda, vacha, trikatuka, and the best salt powder are potent ingredients. Clarified butter infused with Brahmi juice and mixed with honey, consumed for seven days, brings purity and clarity of mind. Siddharthaka, vacha, hing, karanja, devadaru, manjistha, triphala, vishva, shirisha, and both types of turmeric, along with priyangu, neem, and trikatu, ground together with cow’s urine, are beneficial as nasal application, ointment, and body rub. This remedy removes epilepsy, poisoning, insanity, wasting diseases, misfortune, and fever; it also dispels fear from spirits when placed at palace gates. Neem, kushta, two kinds of turmeric, shigru, mustard, devadaru, patola, and dhanya, ground with buttermilk, when used to rub the body after oiling, destroy skin diseases and leprosy, and surely relieve itching. Rock salt, saindhava, alkali, black mustard, common salt, vid, iron rust, trivrit, and suran, cooked with curd, cow’s urine, and milk over a gentle fire, form a powder to be drunk with warm water. This increases strength and digestive fire, allowing the best meats and ghee to be eaten regardless of digestion. This powder removes pain in the navel, urinary tract, abdominal masses, and spleen, stimulates digestive fire, and is especially beneficial for pain caused by indigestion. Haritaki, amalaki, grapes, long pepper, kantakari, shringi, punarnava, and dry ginger, when consumed, cure cough. Haritaki, amalaki, grapes, patha, and vibhitaka, taken with sugar, remedy fever. Triphala, badara, grapes, and long pepper act as purgatives, as does haritaki with warm water and salt. For those afflicted with fever or madness, incense made from the excreta, urine, flesh, hair, or blood of tortoise, fish, horse, buffalo, cow, jackal, monkey, cat, peacock, crow, boar, owl, and rooster is offered for pacification. "O Lord of Uma," Hari declared, "these medicinal substances destroy diseases as Indra’s thunderbolt destroys trees. When the blessed Vishnu is remembered as medicine, he removes diseases; whether meditated upon, worshipped, or praised, there is no need for further deliberation." Then Hari spoke of the auspicious Vaishnava armor, which removes all diseases and once protected Shiva when he destroyed the demons. He bowed to the god, the Lord, the unborn, the ever-healthy, Vishnu, the Lord of all, the all-pervading, the imperishable. Binding the protective thread, he prayed to Janardana, invoking its unfailing and incomparable power to remove all suffering. He invoked Vishnu to protect him in front, Krishna to guard his back, Hari to protect his head, and Janardana his heart. Hrishikesha was called to protect his mind, Kesava his tongue, Vasudeva his eyes at dawn, and Sankarshana, the mighty one, his ears. Pradyumna was invoked for his nose, Aniruddha for his skin, Vanamali to guard the end of his throat, and Shrivatsa to protect below. Thus were the sacred remedies and the divine armor revealed, offering healing, clarity, and protection to all who follow these teachings.
