Hear now, O seeker, a sacred narration of remedies and preparations as revealed in the ancient text. First, let the wise gather three parts of long pepper root, four of vidanga, eight of musali, and four of triphala. Mixing these well with double their combined weight of jaggery, one prepares a potent confection. Consuming this sweet medicine brings relief from indigestion, anemia, jaundice, diarrhea, weak digestion, and disorders of the spleen. Next, consider this array of noble herbs: bilva, agnimantha, shyonaka, patala, paribhadra, prasarani, ashwagandha, brihati, and kantakari. Alongside these, take bala, atibala, rasna, shvadanstra, punarnava, eranda, shariva, parna, guduchi, and kapikacchu. Take ten palas of each, and boil them together in pure water. When only a quarter remains, transfer this decoction into an oil vessel and continue to cook. To this, add four times as much goat’s or cow’s milk, and equal measures of shatavari and rock salt. Now, let me reveal the substances to be pounded: shatapushpa, deodar, bala, parna, vacha, and aguru. Add to these kushta, mansi, rock salt—one pala each—and punarnava. This oil, thus prepared, is to be used for drinking, nasal therapies, and massage. Its power is such that it destroys pain of the heart and sides, glandular swellings, epilepsy, gout, and grants great strength. It is said, O Hara, that if this oil can make a she-mule conceive, what more need be said of its effect on women? For horses, elephants, and humans suffering from wind disorders, this oil brings relief from all such afflictions. For severe ear pain, oil prepared with hing, tumba, and dry ginger—especially when mustard oil is used—is praised as the best of ancient remedies. To further treat ear disorders, take the alkali of dried radish and dry ginger, hing, cinnabar, and ginger, and cook them with four times as much buttermilk to prepare a special oil. Application of this oil destroys deafness, ear pain, pus discharge, and ear worms. A second powerful oil for the ears is prepared from dried radish, dried ginger, alkali, cinnabar, long pepper, dill, sweet flag, costus, Himalayan cedar, and the juice of antimony. Add black salt, barley alkali, rock salt, saindhava salt, granthika, vidanga, nut grass, honey, and four times as much sour gruel, along with the juices of citron and banana. Cook these together in oil, and it becomes a supreme remedy for ear pain. Its application removes deafness, ringing in the ears, severe discharge, and worms, destroying these afflictions immediately. This alkali oil is also excellent for purifying the mouth and teeth. For the skin and body, sandalwood, saffron, spikenard, camphor, nutmeg leaves, nutmeg, kankola, areca nut, and clove fruits are to be used. Add agarwood, musk, costus, tagara, gorocana, priyangu, bala, nakhi, sarala, saptaparna, lac, amalaki, and padmaka. Prepare oil with these ingredients, and it becomes a supreme remedy for sweat, dirt, foul odor, itching, and skin diseases. Remarkably, even a barren woman, after using this oil for a hundred nights, will obtain a child, O Rudra. For disorders of digestion, take ajwain, chitraka, coriander, triyushana, cumin, black salt, vidanga, long pepper root, and black mustard. Cook these with a prastha of clarified butter, adding eight times as much water. This preparation destroys piles, glandular swellings, and edema, and kindles the digestive fire. For skin diseases such as scabies, eczema, ringworm, and blisters, prepare oil with black pepper, trivrit, costus, orpiment, realgar, devadaru, two kinds of turmeric, costus, spikenard, sandalwood, vishala, oleander, arka milk, and cow dung juice—each in the measure of a karsha, and half a pala of poison. Cook a prastha of mustard oil with eight times its volume of cow urine, in an earthen or iron vessel over a gentle fire. Anointing the skin with this oil destroys the aforementioned diseases and softens the skin. Even abundant cases of leucoderma will be instantly destroyed by massaging with this oil. For healing ulcers and wounds, decoct patola leaves, katuka, manjistha, shariva, nisha, jati, ishamini, neem leaves, and licorice in ghee. Apply this, and ulcers, diseases, and foul-smelling wounds are healed. Likewise, shankhapushpi, vacha, soma, brahmi, and brahmasuvarchala are to be used. To enhance memory and intellect, take equal parts of abhaya, guduchi, atarushaka, and vakuchi, and cook them well with one prastha of clarified butter. Mix kantakari juice, one prastha, with an equal measure of milk—this is called Brahmi-ghrita, the supreme enhancer of memory and intellect. Agnimantha, vacha, vasa, pippali, honey, and rock salt, when used for seven nights, are praised by the kinnaras for their efficacy. Apamarga, guduchi, vacha, kushta, shatavari, shankhapushpi, abhaya, ghee, and vidanga, when consumed together, make a man capable of retaining eight hundred verses within three days. If vacha is taken with water, milk, or ghee for one month, it bestows wisdom and the power of retention. Drinking one pala of vacha mixed with milk during an eclipse of the sun or moon instantly bestows great intelligence. For the destruction of diseases, boil water with bhunimba, nimba, triphala, parpata, patoli, mustaka, and vasa. For boils and bleeding, use the fruit of kataka, shankha, rock salt, tryushana, and vacha without doubt. Finally, for eye disorders, make a collyrium of phenī, rasanjana, honey, vidanga, and manashila. This destroys cataract, darkness, and films in the eyes. Thus are revealed these ancient and potent remedies, O blessed one, each prepared with care and devotion, for the healing and well-being of all.
