O best of listeners, hear now the sacred wisdom of remedies as revealed in the scriptures, a stream of healing knowledge for all ailments of body and spirit. It is said that the root of guñjā, when carefully rubbed with goat’s urine, becomes a potent medicine against darkness of vision. If this preparation is applied with a rod made of silver, copper, or gold, rubbed by hand, its effect is heightened. When this ointment is used, O Rudra, it destroys jaundice. And should one smell the fruit of ghoṣā, yellow jaundice is cured. For troubles of the nose, such as nasal piles and bleeding caused by the wind, the juice of dūrvā grass, pomegranate flower, alaktaka, and harītakī brings relief. If the root of jāṅgalī is ground and its juice used as nasal medication, blue and red nasal piles are destroyed, O Bull-bannered One. A paste prepared from cow’s ghee, the resin of the sal tree, coriander, rock salt, datura, and red ochre, when applied with oil, heals wounds of the lips that are cracked or torn. To cure diseases of the mouth, one should chew and hold jasmine leaf. Eating the seeds of saffron makes loose teeth stable, and nutgrass, kushta, cardamom, licorice, and honey also strengthen them. Consuming coriander removes foul odor from the mouth, as does eating astringent, pungent, or bitter leafy vegetables. Regular use of oil ensures that bad breath is always eliminated, and all wounds of the teeth are healed. Holding sour gruel mixed with oil in the mouth, or applying powder of burnt betel leaf, destroys diseases of the mouth, O Shiva. By chewing ginger, phlegm is expelled, and the combination of citron leaves, cardamom, licorice, honey, and long pepper further soothes the throat. Powder of jasmine leaf along with these, and chewing the root of nightshade, cures dryness of the throat. If disorders of blood affect the nose, head, or tongue, the juice of silk tree seeds—four times the amount of turmeric—should be cooked and administered nasally. This cures diseases of the head and instantly destroys throat diseases. Chewing the root of the rosary pea destroys tooth worms, and a mixture of black nightshade, milk hedge, indigo, and honey, O Shiva, destroys worms born in or invading the teeth. A paste of crab’s foot and milk, when applied, prevents the teeth from making a grinding sound. Even coating with crab’s foot alone is effective. For twenty-one days, if one applies a paste of the fruits of jyotishmati, ground with white mustard and raw rice, stains on the teeth are removed. Lodhra, saffron, madder, iron, and other powders, mixed with barley and rice, licorice, and honey, make a paste that, when applied to the face, brings beauty to women. If prepared with goat’s milk and oil, along with red sandalwood, madder, lac, licorice, honey, and saffron, after seven days, a radiant glow appears on the face. Powder of ginger and long pepper, guduchi, and kantakari, when boiled in water and drunk, kindle the digestive fire. For wind-pain and consumption, karanja, parpata, usira, bahati, and katu-rohini are used. Boiled gokshura, when drunk with water, removes fatigue, burning, pitta, fever, wasting, fainting, and consumption. Powdered long pepper with honey and ghee, boiled with milk and drunk, removes heart disease, cough, and irregular fever. For all these decoctions, half a karsha should be taken, and the dose should be suited to one’s age, O bull-bannered one. Milk mixed with cow’s urine, when drunk, removes irregular fever and kakajandhara. Boiled dry ginger with milk also removes fever, as do licorice, musta, rock salt, and the fruit of brihati. These, along with substances that induce sleep, bring rest to the weary. For disturbed sleep, powdered black pepper and saliva are effective, O auspicious one. The root of kakajangha, placed on the head, induces sleep, as does oil prepared with sour gruel and sarja resin. When applied with cold water, this oil removes burning sensations, and relieves heat from blood-fever and burning due to fever. Shrikashaila, mantha, dry ginger, papana, bhedaka, sauvanjana, gokshura, or varuna bark, along with the root of saubhāñjana and water boiled with these, and with added asafoetida and barley-alkali, when drunk, destroy wind disorders. Long pepper, its root, and bhallataka, boiled with water and drunk, are the best remedy for severe colic, O auspicious one. For paralysis of the thigh, the roots of ashwagandha, prepared with earth from an ant hill, when rubbed on the affected area, bring relief, O Rudra. The root of brihati, ground with water and drunk, breaks up wind-accumulation. The root of fresh tagara, when drunk with buttermilk, removes jhinjhini-vata, just as Indra’s thunderbolt shatters obstacles. For mending broken bones, this should be taken with food or meat juice, as it removes wind disorders and aids bone union. Smeared with ghee and dried, then mixed with goat’s milk and applied, swelling of the foot subsides without doubt. Honey, ghee, rock salt, beeswax, jaggery, and guggulu, mixed with sarja resin, when applied, purify the spleen. Thus, O Shiva, are the sacred remedies ordained, each with its purpose, bringing healing and restoration to all who honor the wisdom of the ancient sages.
