Hear now the sacred teachings, as spoken in the Garuda Purana, on remedies for ailments of the head, ears, eyes, nose, lips, teeth, and mouth. The Lord describes with care the preparation and use of each medicine, for the benefit of all. First, the text reveals the excellence of an oil prepared with viḍanga, gandha-pāṣāṇa, and four times the amount of cow's urine. Alternatively, oil made with manasa stone is praised. When this oil is applied to the head, it brings about the destruction of lice and nits. For further effect, freshly burnt conch powder rubbed with lead may be used. O Bull-bannered One, the hair becomes smooth and very black when treated with bhringaraja, iron powder, triphala, and bījapūraka. Cooking indigo and karavira with jaggery, and applying this paste, turns gray hairs black. Mango stone marrow, triphala, indigo, bhringaraja, aged and cooked iron powder, and sour gruel are also effective in making the hair black. To alleviate diseases of the scalp, one should grind cakramarda seeds, kuṣṭha, and castor root with very sour gruel and apply the paste. For further benefit, oil prepared with rock salt, vacā, asafoetida, kuṣṭha, nāgeśvara, śatapuṣpā, and devadāru is recommended. When this oil is mixed with one-fourth part of gopurī juice and applied to the ear, it cures severe ear pain. If the ears are filled with sheep's urine and rock salt, foul odor and discharge caused by worms are removed. Filling the ears with the juice of jasmine petals or with cow's water destroys pus discharge. For other remedies, kaṣṭha, black gram, long pepper, tagara, honey, pippalī, apāmārga, ashwagandha, bṛhatī, and white mustard are used. Barley, sesame, and rock salt are excellent for massage; when applied to the penis, arms, and breasts, they increase their size. Pungent oil, bhallātaka, bṛhatī, and pomegranate are also used, and oil prepared with these barks, when anointed on the penis, increases its size. Then Hari speaks: By applying the juice of sobhāñjana leaves mixed with honey to the eyes, diseases are removed without doubt. One should gather eighty sesame flowers, as well as the flowers of jati, uṣa, nimba, amalaki, dry ginger, long pepper, and rice. Grind these with rice water and dry in the shade to make a tablet; when applied to the eyes with honey, it removes darkness and similar disorders. Take the marrow from the bibhītaka fruit, conch powder, manaḥśilā, neem leaves, and black pepper, and grind them together with goat's urine. This mixture destroys night-blindness and the dense veil of darkness; use four parts conch and half that amount of manaḥśilā. Add half as much saindhava salt, grind all with water, and make a pill dried in the shade; apply it as collyrium to the eyes. This destroys the dense veil of darkness and sticky eye disease. Trikaṭu, triphalā, and the fruits of karanja are also great medicines. Saindhava salt, turmeric, and the juice of bhṛṅgarāja, when ground and used as collyrium, remove darkness and similar disorders. The root of āṭarūṣaka, ground with sour gruel and applied as a paste to the eyelids, alleviates eye pain. Satakra and the root of badarī, when taken, relieve eye discomfort; saindhava salt, pungent oil, and the root of apāmārga are also effective. When rubbed with milk and sour gruel in a copper vessel and used as collyrium, it destroys sticky eye disease, O Śaṅkara. A sacred mantra is also revealed: "Oṃ dadru sara kroṃ hrīṃ ṭhaḥ ṭhaḥ dadru sara hrīṃ hrīṃ oṃ uṃ ū sara krīṃ krīṃ ṭhaḥ ṭhaḥ." When applied as collyrium, the first eye diseases are subdued by this mantra. The root of bilva and kanīlika, when ground and applied, cause darkness in the eyes to vanish with just a single application. Pippalī, tagara, turmeric, amalaki, vacā, and khadira, when ground and used as collyrium, cure eye diseases. One who washes the mouth with water and applies collyrium in a large measure to both eyes every morning is freed from all eye diseases. The root and leaf of white castor, when prepared and applied, relieve burning and heat in the eyes caused by wind. Sandalwood, saindhava salt, old pālāśa, harītakī, kusuma, and nīlī, when used as collyrium, remove the veil and spots in the eyes. The root of guñjā, rubbed with goat's urine, is effective against darkness; it should be applied with a rod rubbed by hand made of silver, copper, or gold. Rubbing this as an ointment, O Rudra, destroys jaundice; the fruit of ghoṣā, when smelled, cures yellow jaundice. For nasal piles and bleeding caused by wind, dūrvā, pomegranate flower, alaktaka, and harītakī, when their juice is used, are effective. After grinding the root of jāṅgalī and using its juice as nasal medication, blue and red nasal piles are destroyed. To heal wounds of the lips that are cracked or torn, cow's ghee, resin of the sal tree, coriander, rock salt, datura, and red ochre are used to prepare a medicinal paste and applied with oil. Chewing the leaf of jasmine and holding it cures diseases of the mouth. By eating the seeds of saffron, the teeth become stable if they are loose; nutgrass, kushta, cardamom, licorice, and honey are also beneficial. By consuming coriander, foul odor of the mouth is removed, as well as by eating astringent, pungent, or bitter leafy vegetables. For those who use oil regularly, foul odor of the mouth is always eliminated, and all wounds of the teeth are cured by this. Holding sour gruel mixed with oil in the mouth, or powder of betel leaf burned and applied, destroys diseases of the mouth, O Shiva. Thus, the sacred wisdom is given, each remedy lovingly described by the Lord for the welfare of all beings.
