In the revered teachings of the Garuḍa Purāṇa, the sage Dhanvantari imparts profound wisdom on the healing of various ailments, guiding seekers through the mysteries of medicine with compassion and clarity. He begins by describing remedies for acidity: the use of Vāsā ghee, bitter ghee, and pippalī ghee, along with guḍa and kūṣmāṇḍa, are prescribed to balance excess acid in the body. Pippalī, when mixed with honey, is said to destroy acidity, while a combination of pippalī, guḍa, and water is beneficial for those suffering from phlegm, weak digestion, or seeking wholesome nourishment. For disorders of phlegm and bile, and to restore proper taste and digestion, Dhanvantari instructs to grind ajājī and dhanyāka, cook them in ghee, and partake of this preparation. When eruptions, pain, or fever afflict the body, a decoction made from pippalī, amṛta, bhūnimba, vāsā, arishta, parpaṭa, and khadira arishta brings relief. To calm erysipelas and fever, and to aid in purgation, one should administer ghee combined with the juice of triphalā and trivṛt. For conquering measles and smallpox, the aṣṭaka decoction—composed of khadira, triphalā arishta, paṭola, amṛta, and vāsā—is highly effective. Dhanvantari further reveals that this mixture destroys stubborn skin diseases such as leprosy, erysipelas, eruptions, and itching. To ward off mosquitoes, a simple application of garlic powder is sufficient. For skin tags, warts, and black marks, he advises excision with a blade, followed by complete cauterization with alkali and fire. When glandular swellings trouble donkeys, a paste of paṭola and nīlī brings cure. For severe disorders of the throat, skin, or wind, boiling the scalp with guñjā fruit and bhṛṅgarāja juice is recommended. If one desires to restore blackness to the hair, a preparation of arka, bone marrow, triphalā, nālīchā, and bhṛṅgarāja, cooked with iron powder and sour gruel, is advised. For premature greyness, oil prepared from milk, sugar, two measures of madhuka, and one measure of oil, when cooked and used as nasal drops, restores natural color. In mouth diseases, gargling and rinsing with triphalā, smoke from the house, barley ash, pāṭhā, vyopara, and collyrium are beneficial. A mixture of powdered tejoda, triphalā, lodhra, and citraka with honey, held in the mouth, cures diseases of the throat, neck, teeth, and mouth. For an excellent astringent mouthwash, the five-leaf mixture of paṭola, neem, vāgra, mālatī, and new leaves is used. Turning to ear ailments, Dhanvantari prescribes the juice of garlic, fresh ginger, drumstick, radish, and rudantī for ear instillation, as it is pungent and warming. In cases of severe ear pain with noise and discharge, lukewarm cow's urine mixed with powdered rock salt should be instilled. For putrid ear conditions, oil cooked with the juice of jātī leaves is effective, while warm oil of dry ginger and mustard alleviates pain. When nasal congestion arises, milk boiled with pañcamūla, citraka, harītakī, clarified butter, jaggery, and a six-ingredient decoction brings relief. Fasting for five nights subdues diseases of the eyes and abdomen, catarrh, ulcers, and fevers. For eye inflammation, the instillation of emblic myrobalan juice is recommended, or an ointment of horseradish and radish juice with honey and rock salt. A poultice made from turmeric, deodar, rock salt, pathyā, ajwain, and cow's ghee, applied externally, cures eye diseases. A paste of triphalā with milk, or with dry ginger and neem leaves, slightly warmed and mixed with a little rock salt, quickly removes swelling, itching, and pain from the eyes. A decoction of abhayā and harītakī, taken with honey and clarified butter, destroys all eye diseases. An ointment made from sandalwood, triphalā, areca nut, and the roots of the palāśa tree, ground with water, removes darkness of vision. Pepper ground with curd serves as an ointment for night blindness, and clarified butter cooked with the paste and decoction of triphalā and milk is beneficial when taken at night, quickly curing darkness of vision. Pippalī, triphalā, grapes, iron powder, and rock salt are also recommended. An ointment made by grinding bhṛṅgarāja juice is said to destroy blindness, darkness, cataract, and other eye diseases. Pills made from trikaṭu, triphalā, saindhava, manaḥśilā, rucaka, conch shell, jātī flowers, neem, rasāñjana, bhṛṅgarāja, clarified butter, honey, and milk, ground together, are potent in destroying all eye diseases. For head pain, a poultice of castor root burnt and pounded with crow's feces, or the flower of mucukunda, brings quick relief. Oil cooked with śatamūlī, castor root, cakrā, vyāghrī, and palāśa, used as nasal drops, removes dryness, phlegm, darkness, and diseases above the neck. In paralysis of the arm and diseases of the upper body, nācana with jaggery or pippalī with rock salt is beneficial. For disorders related to the sun's orbit, nasal therapies and other medicines should be administered. A decoction of Daśamūla with ghee and rock salt, used as nasal drops, alleviates splitting of the limbs and head pain caused by the sun's orbit. For women afflicted by wind or blood disorders, a drink of yogurt, black salt, ajwain, madhuka, blue lotus, and honey is prescribed. In bile disorders, the fresh juice of Vāsaka or Gudūcī, or a paste of āmalakī seeds with water, along with Vāsa, sugar, and honey, should be taken. To relieve anemia and excessive discharge, one should drink the sweet juice of āmalakī or the root of the cotton plant with rice water. The root of taṇḍulīyaka, mixed with honey and fresh juice, taken with rice water, cures all types of excessive bleeding; likewise, the root of kuśa with rice water is effective. Dhanvantari then addresses Suśruta directly, promising to explain the treatment of women’s diseases. For disorders of the womb, therapies that pacify wind are especially recommended. A mixture of vacā, pakuñcikā, jātī, kṛṣṇā, vāsaka, rock salt, ajamodā, yavakṣāra, citraka, and sugar should be prepared. Ground and mixed with water and other liquids, then consumed fried in ghee, this remedy alleviates pain in the womb, sides, and heart, as well as abdominal tumors and hemorrhoids. Thus, with compassion and precision, Dhanvantari reveals the treasures of healing, guiding all who seek relief toward health and harmony.
