O noble Śaṅkara, listen closely to this teaching, for it is a revelation that destroys all sins. Know that Vāsudeva, the Lord of the universe, the very Self of Brahman—indeed, I am that. I am beyond all bodily attributes, untouched by both the perishable and the imperishable. I am the creator, free from all limiting qualities, without name or lineage. I am untouched by the attributes of mind; I am pure knowledge and awareness itself. I am free from the attributes of intellect; I am all-pervading, the universal mind. I am the life within all life, supremely tranquil and untouched by fear. I am the witness and the controller, embodying the nature of supreme bliss. In the fourth state, I am the supreme creator, the very form of consciousness, unattached to all qualities. Thus, those humans who know this and meditate upon the Lord, contemplating the supreme state, attain the highest realization. O Śaṅkara of noble vows, this meditation has now been described to you. But, O Lord, by reciting what does one become freed from the dreadful ocean of worldly existence? Hear, then, of the Supreme Lord, the Supreme Brahman, the imperishable Supreme Self. I shall tell you, O Bull-bannered one, the pure and supreme mantra that must be recited. Om! Vāsudeva, Mahāviṣṇu, Vāmana, Vāsava, Vasu—the binder of Bali, the creator, the most excellent, knower of the Vedas, the wise—knower of the limbs of the Veda, Lord of the Vedas, foundation of strength, destroyer of strength—slayer of heroes, the great hero, worshipped, Supreme Lord—lotus-naveled, possessor of the lotus-treasure, lotus-handed, wielder of the mace—lotus-thighed, lotus-eyed, adorned with a garland of lotuses, beloved—boundless, of supreme purpose, and the supreme Lord of the supreme—pure, of the form of light, sanctified, the protector—the chief, the earth-lotus, lotus-naveled, bestower of affection—the support of all the worlds, all-seeing, sustainer of all—worthy of all worship, the first of all, saluted by all the gods—protector of all, the ultimate refuge of all, the cause of all causes. He is the overseer of all, the lord of the gods, honored by both gods and demons. He is the protector of truth, the one whose navel is the origin, the lord of the perfected beings, worshipped by the perfected ones. He is the refuge of the world, the source of welfare and security. He abides in truth, his resolve is truth, he knows truth, and he speaks truth. He is the doer of actions, the action itself, the process, and also the result. He is indeed the lord of the gods, praised as the lord of the Vṛṣṇis. He is the lord of the animals, and the lord of the Vasus. He is the lord of the trees, and the lord of the wind. He is the lord of Kubera, and the lord of the stars. He is the lord of the serpents, the lord of the sun, and the lord of Dakṣa. He is the lord of the Gandharvas, and the supreme lord of the Asūnas. He is the foremost lord of the gods, and the lord of Kapila. He is the lord of the sages, and the supreme lord of the sun. He is the lord of the planets, and the lord of the Rākṣasas. Thus, O Śaṅkara, meditate upon and recite these names and qualities of the Supreme Lord, for in doing so, one finds liberation from the endless ocean of worldly existence and attains the highest state.
