ज्ञात्व प्रमाणमुर्व्यास्तु सुखं स्रक्ष्यामहे प्रजाः । इति सञ्चिन्त्य ते सर्वे प्रयाताः प्रेक्षितुं भुवः
Having understood the measure of the earth, we shall easily create progeny; so thinking, they all set out to survey the earth.
तलं सर्वं परिज्ञातुं वचनान्नारदस्य च । प्राच्यां केचिद्गताः कामं दक्षिणस्यां तथापरे
To ascertain the entire surface, and following Nārada's words, some went east, others south, as they wished.
प्रतीच्यामुत्तरस्यां तु कृतोत्साहाः समन्ततः । दक्षः पुत्रान्गतान्दृष्ट्वा पीडितस्तु शुचा भृशम्
Some, filled with enthusiasm, went west and north in all directions; seeing his sons gone, Dakṣa was greatly afflicted with sorrow.
अन्यानुत्पादयामास प्रजार्थं कृतनिश्चयः । तेऽपि तत्रोद्यताः कर्तुं प्रजार्थमुद्यमं सुताः
Resolute for the sake of progeny, he produced others; those sons also undertook the endeavor to create progeny.
नारदः प्राह तान्दृष्ट्वा पूर्वं यद्वचनं मुनिः । बालिशा बत यूयं वै यदज्ञात्वा भुवः किल
Nārada, seeing them, spoke as before; the sage said: 'Alas, how childish you are, for you act without truly knowing the world.'
प्रमाणं तु प्रजाः कर्तुं प्रवृत्ताः केन हेतुना । श्रुत्वा वाक्यं मुनेस्तेऽपि मत्वा सत्यं विमोहिताः
For what reason have you set out to create offspring as a standard? Hearing the sage's words, you were deluded, thinking them to be true.
जग्मुः सर्वे यथापूर्वं भ्रातरश्चलितास्तथा । तान्सुतान्प्रस्थितान्दृष्ट्वा दक्षः कोपसमवितः
All of them departed as before, just as their brothers had strayed; seeing his sons set out, Dakṣa was filled with anger.
शशाप नारदं कोपात् पुत्रशोकसमुद्भवात् । दक्ष उवाच - नाशिता मे सुता यस्मात् तस्मान्नाशमवाप्नुहि
Out of wrath and grief for his sons, Dakṣa cursed Nārada: 'Because you have destroyed my sons, may you too meet with destruction.'
पापेनानेन दुर्बुद्धे गर्भवासं व्रजेति च । पुत्रो मे भव कामं त्वं यतो मे भ्रंशिताः सुताः
'Because of this sinful act, O misguided one, you shall enter the womb; become my son if you wish, since you have caused the loss of my sons.'
इति शप्तस्ततो जातो वीरिण्यां नारदो मुनिः । षष्टिर्भूयोऽसृजत्कन्या वीरिण्यामिति नः श्रुतम्
Thus cursed, the sage Nārada was then born from Vīriṇī; it is heard that he again created sixty daughters from Vīriṇī.
शोकं विहाय पुत्राणां दक्षः परमधर्मवित् । तासां त्रयोदश प्रादात्कश्यपाय महात्मने
Dakṣa, knower of supreme dharma, set aside his grief for his sons and gave thirteen of them to the great-souled Kaśyapa.
दश धर्माय सोमाय सप्तविंशति भूपते । द्वे चैव भृगवे प्रादाच्चतस्रोऽरिष्टनेमिने
He gave ten to Dharma, twenty-seven to Soma, two to Bhṛgu, and four to Ariṣṭanemi, O king.
द्वे चैवाङ्गिरसे कन्ये तथैवाङ्गिरसे पुनः । तासां पुत्राश्च पौत्राश्च देवाश्च दानवास्तथा
He also gave two daughters to Aṅgiras, and again two to Aṅgiras; from them were born sons and grandsons, as well as gods and demons.
जाता बलसमायुक्ताः परस्परविरोधकाः । रागद्वेषान्विताः सर्वे परस्परविरोधिनः । सर्वे मोहावृताः शूरा ह्यभवन्नतिमायिनः
They were born endowed with strength, opposed to one another, all filled with attachment and aversion, mutually hostile, all covered by delusion, and valiant, exceedingly proud.
शर्यातिराजवर्णनम् ममाख्याहि महाभाग राज्ञां वंशं सुविस्तरम् । सूर्यान्वयप्रसूतानां धर्मज्ञानां विशेषतः
Description of King Śaryāti. 'O greatly fortunate one, tell me in detail the lineage of kings, especially those born in the solar line who are knowers of dharma.'
शृणु भारत वक्ष्यामि रविवंशस्य विस्तरम् । यथा श्रुतं मया पूर्वं नारदाद्ऋषिसत्तमात्
'Hear, O Bhārata, I will recount the lineage of the solar dynasty as I have previously heard it from the eminent sage Nārada.'
एकदा नारदH श्रीमान्सरस्वत्यास्तटे शुभे । आजगामाश्रमे पुण्ये विचरन्स्वेच्छया मुनिः
Once, the illustrious Nārada, wandering as he pleased, came to a holy hermitage on the auspicious bank of the Sarasvatī.
प्रणम्य शिरसा पादौ तस्याग्रे संस्थितस्तदा । ततस्तस्यासनं दत्त्वा कृत्वार्हणमथादरात्
Bowing his head, he stood before him and, after offering a seat and proper hospitality with respect,
विधिवत्पूजयित्वा तं उक्तवान्वचनं त्विदम् । पावितोऽहं मुनिश्रेष्ठ पूज्यस्यागमनेन वै
Having worshipped him according to the rite, he spoke these words: 'O best of sages, I am purified by the arrival of one so worthy of honor.'
कथां कथय सर्वज्ञ राज्ञां चरितसंयुताम् । राजानो ये समाख्याताः सप्तमेऽस्मिन्मनोः कुले
'O all-knowing one, tell me the stories of kings, filled with their deeds—those kings who have been described in the lineage of this seventh Manu.'
तेषामुत्पत्तिरतुला चरितं परमाद्भुतम् । श्रोतुकामोऽस्म्यहं ब्रह्मन् सूर्यवंशस्य विस्तरम्
'Their birth is incomparable, their deeds most wondrous; I wish to hear, O Brāhmaṇa, the detailed account of the solar dynasty.'
समाख्याहि मुनिश्रेष्ठ समासव्यासपूर्वकम् । इति पृष्टो मया राजन्नारदः परमार्थवित्
'O best of sages, recount it to me both in summary and in detail.' Thus questioned by me, O king, Nārada, knower of the highest truth—
उवाच प्रहसन्प्रीतः समाभाष्य मुदान्वयम् । नारद उवाच - शृणु सत्यवतीसूनो राज्ञां वंशमनुत्तमम्
Narada spoke, smiling with delight and addressing him with joy: Hear, O son of Satyavati, the most excellent lineage of kings.
पावनं कर्णसुखदं धर्मज्ञानादिभिर्युतम् । ब्रह्मा पूर्वं जगत्कर्ता नाभिपङ्कजसम्भवः
It is pure, pleasing to the ear, endowed with righteousness, knowledge, and other virtues; Brahma, the creator of the world in the beginning, born from the lotus of the navel—
विष्णोरिति पुराणेषु प्रसिद्धः परिकीर्तितः । सर्वज्ञः सर्वकर्तासौ स्वयम्भूः सर्वशक्तिमान्
He is renowned in the Puranas as Vishnu; he is proclaimed as all-knowing, the doer of all, self-born, and possessed of all power.
तपस्तप्त्वा स विश्वात्मा वर्षाणामयुतं पुरा । सृष्टिकामः शिवां ध्यात्वा प्राप्य शक्तिमनुत्तमाम्
That soul of the universe, having performed austerities for ten thousand years in ancient times, desiring creation, meditated on the auspicious one and obtained unsurpassed power.
पुत्रानुत्पदयामास मानसाञ्छुभलक्षणान् । मरीचिः प्रथिस्तेषामभवत्सृष्टिकर्मणि
He produced sons from his mind, marked by auspicious qualities; among them, Marici was the first in the work of creation.
तस्य पुत्रोऽतिविख्यातः कश्यपः सर्वसम्मतः । त्रयोदशैव तस्यासन्भार्या दक्षसुताः किल
His son, most renowned, was Kashyapa, esteemed by all; he had thirteen wives, said to be the daughters of Daksha.
देवाः सर्वे समुत्पन्ना दैत्या यक्षाश्च पन्नगाः । पशवः पक्षिणश्चैव तस्मात्सृष्टिस्तु काश्यपी
From him were born all the gods, the demons, the yakshas, the serpents, the cattle, and the birds; thus, creation is known as Kashyapa's.
देवानां प्रथितः सूर्यो विवस्वान्नाम तस्य तु । तस्य पुत्रः स विख्यातो वैवस्वतमनुर्नृपः
Among the gods, the illustrious Sun is known as Vivasvan; his son, famed, is King Vaivasvata Manu.
