उच्चप्रासादसंयुक्तं पताकाभिरलंकृतम् । नृत्यगीतकलापूर्णं मन्दारद्रुमसंयुतम्
With lofty palaces, decorated with banners, full of dance, song, and art, and joined with mandara trees.
बकुलाशोकतिलकचम्पकालिविमण्डितम् । कूजितैर्विहगानां तु कर्णाह्लादकरैर्युतम्
Adorned with bakula, ashoka, tilaka, champaka, and alivi trees, and filled with the delightful calls of birds pleasing to the ear.
संवीक्ष्य भवनं विष्णोर्द्वास्थौ प्राह प्रणम्य च । जयविजयनामानौ वेत्रपाणी स्थितावुभौ
Having observed Vishnu's palace, he bowed and addressed the two gatekeepers, Jay and Vijaya, who stood holding staffs.
चित्ररूप उवाच भो निवेदयत शीघ्रं हरये परमात्मने । दूतं प्राप्यं हरस्यात्र प्रेरितं शूलपाणिना
Chitrarupa said: 'O, quickly inform Hari, the Supreme Self, that a messenger has arrived here, sent by Hara, the wielder of the trident.'
तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं तस्य जयः परमबुद्धिमान् । गत्वा हरिं प्रणम्याह कृताञ्जलिपुटः पुरः
Hearing his words, Jay, who was exceedingly wise, went to Hari, bowed, and spoke before him with hands joined in reverence.
देवदेव रमाकान्त करुणाकर केशव । द्वारि तिष्ठति दूतोऽत्र शङ्करस्य समागतः
O Lord of gods, beloved of Lakshmi, ocean of compassion, Kesava, a messenger has arrived at the door here, sent by Shankara.
आज्ञापय प्रवेष्टव्यो न वेति गरुडध्वज । चित्ररूपधरोऽप्यस्ति न जाने कार्यगौरवम्
Command, O Garuda-bannered one, whether he should be admitted or not; he bears the form of Chitrarupa, but I do not know the importance of his mission.
इत्याकर्ण्य हरिः प्राह जयं प्रज्ञातकारणः । प्रवेशयात्र रुद्रस्य भृत्यं समयसंस्थितम्
Hearing this, Hari, who understood the reason, said to Jay: 'Admit here the servant of Rudra, who stands by the agreement.'
इत्याकर्ण्य जयस्तूर्णं गत्वा तं परमाद्भुतम् । एहीत्याकारयामास जयः शङ्करसेवकम्
Hearing this, Jay swiftly went to that wondrous being and, saying 'Come,' ushered in Shankara's attendant.
प्रवेशितो जयेनाथ चित्ररूपस्तथाकृतिः । प्रणम्य दण्डवद्विष्णुं कृताञ्जलिपुटः स्थितः
Admitted by Jay, Chitrarupa entered, and after bowing prostrate to Vishnu, stood with hands joined in reverence.
दृष्ट्वा तं विस्मयं प्राप भगवान् गरुडध्वजः । चित्ररूपधरं शम्भोः सेवकं विनयान्वितम्
Seeing him, the Lord with the Garuda banner was amazed at Chitrarupa, Shambhu's servant, who was full of humility.
पप्रच्छ तं स्मितं कृत्वा चित्ररूपं रमापतिः । कुशलं देवदेवस्य सकुटुम्बस्य चानघ
Ramapati, smiling, questioned Chitrarupa: 'Is all well with the Lord of gods and his family, O sinless one?'
कस्मात्त्वं प्रेषितोऽस्यत्र ब्रूहिकार्यं हरस्य किम् । अथवा देवतानां च किञ्चित्कार्यं समुत्थितम्
For what reason have you been sent here? Tell me what business Hara has, or perhaps some matter has arisen among the gods.
दूत उवाच किमज्ञातं तवास्तीह संसारे गरुडध्वज । वर्तमानं त्रिकालज्ञ यदहं प्रब्रवीमि वै
The messenger said: 'O Garuda-bannered one, is there anything unknown to you in this world? You know the past, present, and future; yet I will speak what I have been sent to say.'
प्रेषितोऽस्मि भवेनात्र विज्ञस्तु त्वां जनार्दन । हरस्य वचनाद्वाक्यं प्रब्रवीमि त्वयि प्रभो
I have been sent here by my master, and I know you, O Janardana. By Hara's command, I will speak his message to you, O Lord.
तेनोक्तमेतद्देवेश भार्या ते कमलालया । तपस्तपति कालिन्दीतमसासङ्गमे विभो
He said this, O Lord of gods: 'Your wife, the lotus-dwelling one, is performing austerities at the confluence of the Yamuna and Tamasa rivers, O mighty one.'
हयीरूपधरा देवी सर्वार्थसिद्धिदायिनी । ध्यातुं योग्यामरगणैर्मानवैर्यक्षकिन्नरैः
The goddess, assuming the form of a horse, grants the fulfillment of all desires; she is fit to be meditated upon by the hosts of immortals, humans, yakshas, and kinnaras.
विना तया नरः कोऽपिसुखभागी भवेन्न हि । तां त्यक्त्वा पुण्डरीकाक्ष प्राप्नोषि किं सुखं हरे
Without her, no man can partake of happiness; having abandoned her, O lotus-eyed Hari, what happiness can you attain?
दुर्बलोऽपि स्त्रियं पाति निर्धनोऽपि जगत्पते । विनापराधं च विभो किं त्यक्ता जगदीश्वरी
Even a weak man protects his wife, even a poor man, O Lord of the world; O mighty one, why has the Lady of the universe been abandoned without fault?
दुःखं प्राप्नोति संसारे यस्य भार्या जगद्गुरो । धिक्तस्य जीवितं लोके निन्दितं त्वरिमण्डले
In this world, he whose wife is the Lady of the universe, O teacher of the world, attains suffering; shame upon his life, it is condemned in this realm.
सकामा रिपवस्तेऽद्य दृष्ट्वा तां दुःखिता भृशम् । त्वां वियुक्तं च रमया हसिष्यन्ति दिवानिशम्
Your enemies, desiring their own ends, will see her deeply distressed today, and you separated from Ramā; they will mock you day and night.
रमां रमय देवेश त्वदुत्सङ्गगतां कुरु । सर्वलक्षणसम्पन्नां सुशीलां च सुरूपिणीम्
O Lord of the gods, delight Ramā; let her rest upon your lap, she who is endowed with all marks of excellence, virtuous, and beautiful.
सुखितो भव तां प्राप्य वल्लभां चारुहासिनीम् । कान्ताविरहजं दुःखं स्मराम्यहमनातुरः
Be happy, having attained that beloved one with a lovely smile; I remember, without distress, the sorrow born from separation from my own beloved.
मम भार्या मृता विष्णो दक्षयज्ञे सती यदा । तदाहं दुःसहं दुःखं भुक्तवानम्बुजेक्षण
When my wife, Satī, died in Dakṣa’s sacrifice, O lotus-eyed Viṣṇu, I endured unbearable grief at that time.
संसारेऽस्मिन्नरः कोऽपि माभून्मत्सदृशोऽपरः । मनसाकरवं शोकं तस्या विरहपीडितः
In this world, no man has been like me; I bore sorrow in my heart, afflicted by the pain of her separation.
कालेन महता प्राप्ता मया गिरिसुता पुनः । तपस्तप्त्वातिदुःसाध्यं या दग्धा तु रुषाध्वरे
After a long time, I again obtained the daughter of the mountain, having performed extremely difficult austerities; she who was burned in the sacrificial fire out of anger.
हरे किं सुखमापन्नं त्वया सन्त्यज्य कामिनीम् । एकाकी तिष्ठता कालं सहस्रवत्सरात्मकम्
O Hari, what happiness did you gain by abandoning your beloved, living alone for a time spanning a thousand years?
गत्वाश्वास्य महाभागां समानय निजालयम् । माभूत्कोऽपीह संसारे विमुक्तो रमया तया
Go, comfort the blessed one, and bring her to your own abode; let no one in this world be separated from Ramā as you are.
कृत्वा तुरगरूपं त्वं भज तां कमलालयाम् । उत्पाद्य पुत्रमायुष्मंस्तामानय शुचिस्मिताम्
Taking the form of a horse, approach her who dwells in the lotus; beget a long-lived son and bring her, pure-smiling, back.
व्यास उवाच हरिराकर्ण्य तद्वाक्यं चित्ररूपस्य भारत । तथेत्युक्त्वा तु तं दूतं प्रेषयामास शङ्करम्
Vyāsa said: Hari, hearing those words of the wondrous form, replied, 'So be it,' and sent that messenger to Śaṅkara.
