Therefore, today, humbly beg my son Aurva; if you appease him with reverence, he will restore your sight.
Vyasa said: Hearing her words, the Haihayas praised him and, filled with humility, bowed to Aurva, the best of sages.
He, being satisfied, spoke to them, endowed with vision: 'Return to your homes, O kings, remembering my words.'
Those events that must happen are indeed ordained by the gods; therefore, a wise person should not grieve over them.
Let all the sages, as before, attain happiness; let them return to their homes, free from anger, as they wish.
Thus instructed by him, the Haihayas regained their sight, took leave of Aurva, and departed to their abodes as they pleased.
The Brahmani, taking her divine son, returned to her hermitage and diligently cared for the radiant child, O king.
Thus, O king, the destruction of the Bhrigus has been narrated to you, and the sin committed by the Kshatriyas, seized by greed.
Janamejaya said: I have heard of the great deed and the dreadful act of the Kshatriyas; here, greed alone is the cause, and it brought sorrow to both sides.
I wish to ask something, O son of Vasavi, to clear my doubt: How did the Haihayas, the sons of kings, become known by that name on earth?
Just as the Yadavas are descended from Yadu and the Bharatas from Bharata, was there some king named Haihaya established in their lineage?
Therefore, I wish to hear, O ocean of compassion, the reason and the deed by which the Haihayas, those Kshatriyas, were born.
Vyāsa said: O King, listen in detail to the origin of the Haihayas, to this ancient and most auspicious tale that destroys sin.
O King, at a certain time, there was the radiant son of the Sun, renowned as Revanta, handsome and of measured brilliance.
Mounted upon Uccaiḥśravas, the enchanting jewel among horses, the son of the Sun went to Viṣṇu’s abode, Vaikuṇṭha.
Desiring a vision of the Blessed Lord, he arrived riding the horse; and thus, Lakṣmī beheld the son of the Sun seated upon the horse.
Seeing that divine horse, her brother born from the ocean, Ramā was astonished by its beauty and stood gazing, her eyes transfixed.
The Blessed Lord too, seeing him approach so enchantingly on horseback, lovingly asked Ramā as she came near.
"Who is this, O beautiful one, approaching mounted on a horse, as if another god? His form shines with the radiance of Kāma, enchanting the three worlds."
At that moment, Lakṣmī, her mind absorbed by the sight, by divine arrangement did not speak a word, though asked again and again.
Vyāsa said: Seeing her mind attached to the horse, utterly bewildered like a passionate woman, gazing with restless, love-filled eyes,
The Blessed Lord, angered, said to her: "Why do you gaze so, O lovely-eyed one? Bewildered by seeing the horse, though questioned, you do not reply."
"Because you delight everywhere, O Ramā, therefore you will be ever unsteady; due to your fickleness, you will always be called inconstant—of this there is no doubt."
"Just as an ordinary woman is indeed fickle, so too, O blessed one, you will never be steadfast."
"If, O slender-thighed one, you have been enchanted by seeing the horse near me, then become a mare in the harsh world of mortals."
Thus cursed by Hari through divine will, the goddess Ramā trembled, overwhelmed by fear and sorrow, and wept.
With suspicion, the lovely-smiling Ramā, bowing her head to her Lord with humility, addressed the Lord of Ramā.
"O God of gods, Lord of the universe, ocean of compassion, Keśava, for such a slight fault, Govinda, why do you curse me?"
"Never before have I seen such anger from you, O Lord; where has your natural, enduring affection for me gone?"
"A thunderbolt should be cast upon an enemy, not upon a friend; I have always been worthy of your favor—how have I become worthy of a curse?"
