Even Indra, having worshipped her, will slay his enemy in battle; that great enchantress, Mahamaya, will delude the demon.
Deluded by her Maya, Vritra will become easy to conquer; when the supreme Mother is pleased, all things become possible.
Otherwise, no one’s desires will ever be fulfilled; she is the inner ruler, the cause of all causes.
Therefore, O best of gods, worship that supreme Nature, the Mother of the universe, with pure devotion, for the destruction of your enemies.
Long ago, I too fought a most terrible battle; for five thousand years, I slew Madhu and Kaitabha.
Then, having greatly praised her, the supreme Nature was pleased; those two demons were deluded and, by my trick, were slain.
Those mighty, arrogant demons were deceived and destroyed; in the same way, worship Nature with devotion.
In every way, she will accomplish your purpose, O best of gods; thus has the mighty Vishnu given you this counsel.
They went to the summit of Mount Meru, adorned with Mandara trees; there, the gods stood apart, engaging in meditation, recitation, and austerity.
They praised the Mother of the worlds, who creates and dissolves the universe, who fulfills the wishes of devotees and destroys the sufferings of worldly existence.
The gods said: O Goddess, be gracious! Protect the gods who are tormented and oppressed in battle by Vritra; you are devoted to destroying the suffering of the distressed, and those who have reached the refuge of your lotus feet always attain the highest truth.
You are the Mother of all creation—protect us as a mother protects her sons who are overwhelmed in this danger from enemies; Mother, nothing in the three worlds is unknown to you, so why do you neglect the gods and asuras who are afflicted?
This entire threefold world has been established by you alone; Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva arise from your will; they perform all actions not by their own power, but move as you direct, by the mere movement of your brow.
A mother protects her afflicted children from disgrace—this is the rule you have made; even those who have committed obvious faults are protected, so why, O Goddess, do you not protect us, who are without fault and have taken refuge at your feet, O ocean of compassion?
Surely, those who have attained your feet by worship have now abandoned devotion, greedy for the pleasures of prosperity; if you say they are not worthy of your glance, even so, this is not seen as the way of a mother toward her children.
O Mother, no fault appears to us here, for it is you who have created delusion, causing us to abandon your worship and become absorbed in worldly pleasures; since this delusion arises from you, O naturally compassionate one, why do you not show mercy?
Mother, you once destroyed the mighty demon lord who had taken the form of a buffalo in battle; for our sake, you removed the terror he brought to all worlds. Why, then, do you not dispel the fear caused by Vṛtra, O Mother?
Śumbha and his powerful brother Niśumbha, along with their followers, were slain by you; in the same way, merciful one, destroy this wicked and formidable Vṛtra, and bewilder him so that he may not become as dangerous as they were.
Mother, protect the gods today from the demon; they are greatly afflicted and overwhelmed by fear. There is no one else in the worlds who can remove all suffering with their own power and destroy the distress of the gods.
Even if your compassion for Vṛtra is renowned, still, quickly slay this wicked one who causes suffering to people. Lift us from evil by purifying with your arrows, O Bhavānī; otherwise, the darkness of his corrupt mind will surely prevail.
Those gods whom you brought to the celestial grove, having purified them by slaying their enemies in battle with arrows, were protected from the fear of falling into hell, O compassionate one. Why, then, do you not destroy Vṛtra, who is also an enemy?
We know that this enemy is your servant and, for the most part, does not torment us with his wicked mind. If he is devoted to you, O immortal one, would he trouble those who are attached to your lotus feet?
Mother, how can we worship you today with offerings such as flowers, since all these are made by you? The mantras, ourselves, and everything are forms of your power; therefore, Bhavānī, we surely bow at your feet.
Blessed are those humans who worship your lotus feet with devotion, which serve as a boat across the ocean of existence; even yogis constantly remember them in their minds, seeking liberation, free from passion, change, and delusion.
Those who know all the Vedas, the ritualists, surely remember you always at the time of sacrifice. You are the 'svāhā,' the mother of satisfaction for the immortal lords, and again the 'svadhā,' the cause of satisfaction for the hosts of ancestors.
You are intelligence, you are beauty, you are peace, and you are the renowned clarity of understanding for people. You alone are all prosperity in the three worlds, and you always grant it to your devotees with compassion.

With four arms shining with noose, goad, boon, and fearlessness, her waist was adorned with a girdle of tinkling bells.
Her voice was melodious as a cuckoo, charming, with bracelets and anklets that jingled; her crown, set with gems, gleamed like a crescent moon.
Her lotus-like face was adorned with a gentle smile, and she was graced with three eyes; her radiance matched the color of fresh pārijāta blossoms.
