He, intoxicated with strength, spoke to her: 'Stand, O Goddess, in the field of battle.'
You are foolish and drunk with pride; today you will fight with me.
After killing you, I will destroy those deceitful gods.
The Goddess spoke: 'After slaying you, I will make the best of the gods free from fear.'
Today, after drinking the sweet wine, I will cut you down in battle, O vile one.
Vyasa spoke: Again and again, out of anger and wishing to kill the great demon, she drank.
After drinking the sweet grape wine, she swiftly seized her spear.
The gods praised her with love and showered flowers upon her.
The sages, Siddhas, Gandharvas, spirits, serpents, and Charanas,
He, again and again, assumed various forms and bodies.
And Chandika forcefully struck that wicked one in the heart with her trident.
Struck, he fell to the ground and was unconscious for a moment.
She repeatedly laughed, having subdued him with kicks.
Then the Goddess took up the supreme thousand-spoked, beautiful discus.
Behold this discus, O one blinded by intoxication, which will sever your neck.
Having spoken thus, Jagadambika released the dreadful discus.
Hot blood flowed from his throat, as from a mountain.
The headless trunk of that demon, spinning, fell to the earth.
There, the lions, though exceedingly strong, turned to flight.
And when the fierce Mahisha was slain, the Daityas, afflicted by fear,
The gods attained supreme joy when he was struck down.
And Chandika, too, left the battlefield and stood in a pure place.
Vyasa said: Then all the gods, led by Indra, rejoicing, seeing Mahisha slain, praised the Mother of the Universe.
The gods said: Brahma creates, Vishnu sustains this world, and Mahesha destroys it—indeed, all by your power, especially at the end of time.
You are fame, intelligence, memory, the path of remembrance, compassion, kindness, faith, fortitude, the earth, the lotus-born, nourishment, art, victory, Girija, triumph, satisfaction, measure, wisdom, Uma, and Rama.
You are knowledge, forbearance, beauty in the world, and wisdom here; you alone are known in all three worlds; without these your powers, who indeed is able to act, O foundation of all beings?
You are support; if you were not, how could Kurma and Ananta bear even the earth? If you were not the earth, how would this entire burdened world remain in the sky, O Mother?
Those men, deluded, who praise the gods—Brahma, Vishnu, Rudra—by your qualities of maya, and the chief among the bright ones, the Sun, Fire, Yama, Wind, and Ganesha, what power do they have in action without you, Mother?
Those of little understanding who offer oblations in the fire, invoking the gods in sacrifice—if you, Svaha, are not present, how could their offerings reach completion? Why, then, do the deluded not worship you alone?
You grant enjoyment here to all moving and unmoving beings; by your own portions you always give life; you nourish your own gods here, Mother, and for this reason you also protect others as well.
