रक्षपालाश्च मे सर्वे सावधाना न संशयः । कुतोऽत्र कन्यका कामं क्व गतः स सुतः किल
All my guards are vigilant, without doubt; how has this girl come here, and where has the son gone?
सन्देहोऽत्र न कर्तव्यः कालस्य विषमा गतिः । इति सञ्चिन्त्य तां बालां गृहीत्वा पादयोः खलः
No doubt should be entertained here; time's course is unpredictable. Thinking thus, the wicked one seized the girl by her feet.
पोथयामास पाषाणे निर्घृणः कुलपांसनः । सा करान्निःसृता बाला ययावाकाशमण्डलम्
He mercilessly dashed her against a stone, a disgrace to his lineage; but the girl escaped from his hands and ascended into the sky.
दिव्यरूपा तदा भूत्वा तमुवाच मृदुस्वना । किं मया हतया पाप जातस्ते बलवान् रिपुः
Assuming a divine form, she spoke to him in a gentle voice: 'By killing me, O sinner, what have you achieved? Your powerful enemy has already been born.'
हनिष्यति दुराराध्यः सर्वथा त्वां नराधमम् । इत्युक्त्वा सा गता कन्या गगनं कामगा शिवा
She, who is difficult to propitiate, will surely destroy you, vile man. Having spoken thus, the auspicious maiden departed, moving through the sky at will.
कंसस्तु विस्मयाविष्टो गतो निजगृहं तदा । आनाय्य दानवान्सर्वानिदं वचनमब्रवीत्
Then Kamsa, filled with astonishment, went to his own house and summoned all the demons, speaking these words to them.
बकधेनुकवत्सादीन्क्रोधाविष्टो भयातुरः । गच्छन्तु दानवाः सर्वे मम कार्यार्थसिद्धये
Overcome by anger and seized by fear, he said: Let all the demons—Baka, Dhenuka, Vatsaka, and others—go forth to accomplish my purpose.
जातमात्राश्च हन्तव्या बालका यत्र कुत्रचित् । पूतनैषा व्रजत्वद्य बालघ्नी नन्दगोकुलम्
Wherever newborn boys are found, they must be slain. Let Putana, the child-killer, go today to Nanda's cowherd village.
जातमात्रान्विनिघ्नन्ती शिशूंस्तत्र ममाज्ञया । धेनुको वत्सकः केशी प्रलम्बो बक एव च
By my command, let her destroy the newborn infants there. Dhenuka, Vatsaka, Kesi, Pralamba, and Baka as well—
सर्वे तिष्ठन्तु तत्रैव मम कार्यचिकीर्षया । इत्याज्ञाप्यासुरान्कंसो ययौ निजगृहं खलः
Let them all remain there, intent on carrying out my will. Thus instructing the demons, the wicked Kamsa returned to his own house.
चिन्ताविष्टोऽतिदीनात्मा चिन्तयित्वैव तं पुनः
His mind overwhelmed by anxiety and utterly dejected, he kept brooding over that matter again.
देव्या कृष्णशोकायनोदनम् व्यास उवाच प्रातर्नन्दगृहे जातः पुत्रजन्ममहोत्सवः । किंवदन्त्यथ कंसेन श्रुता चारमुखादपि
Vyasa said: In the morning, a great festival for the birth of a son was held at Nanda's house. The rumor of this, as well as Kamsa's own spies, reached his ears.
जानाति वसुदेवस्य दारास्तत्र वसन्ति हि । पशवो दासवर्गश्च सर्वे ते नन्दगोकुले
He knows that Vasudeva's wife and all the cattle and servants are living there in Nanda's cowherd village.
तेन शङ्कासमाविष्टो गोकुलं प्रति भारत । नारदेनापि तत्सर्वं कथितं कारणं पुरा
Because of this, Bharata, he was filled with suspicion toward Gokula; and long ago, Narada had also told him the whole reason.
गोकुले ये च नन्दाद्यास्तत्पत्न्यश्च सुरांशजाः । देवकीवसुदेवाद्याः सर्वे ते शत्रवः किल
All those in Gokula—Nanda and the others, along with their wives who are born from portions of the gods, as well as Devaki, Vasudeva, and the rest—are indeed his enemies.
इति नारदवाक्येन बोधितोऽसौ कुलाधमः । जातः कोपमना राजन् कंसः परमपापकृत्
Thus, instructed by Narada's words, that most wicked of his line, Kamsa, became enraged, O King, and committed the gravest sins.
पूतना निहता तत्र कृष्णेनामिततेजसा । बको वत्सासुरश्चापि धेनुकश्च महाबलः
There, Putana was slain by Krishna of immeasurable energy, as were Baka, Vatsasura, and the mighty Dhenuka.
प्रलम्बो निहतस्तेन तथा गोवर्धनो धृतः । श्रुत्वैतत्कर्म कंसस्तु मेने मरणमात्मनः
Pralamba was also killed by him, and Govardhana was lifted up. Hearing of these deeds, Kamsa considered his own death certain.
तथा विनिहतः केशी ज्ञात्वा कंसोऽतिदुर्मनाः । धनुर्यागमिषेणाशु तावानेतुं प्रचक्रमे
Likewise, when Kesi was slain, Kamsa became exceedingly disturbed in mind and quickly resolved to bring the two to the bow-sacrifice.
अक्रूरं प्रेषयामास क्रूरः पापमतिस्तदा । आनेतुं रामकृष्णौ च वधायामितविक्रमौ
Then the cruel-minded Kamsa sent Akrura to bring Rama and Krishna, those of boundless might, for the purpose of killing them.
रथमारोप्य गोपालौ गोकुलाद् गान्दिनीसुतः । आगतो मथुरायां तु कंसादेशे स्थितः किल
The son of Gandini placed the two cowherd boys on a chariot and brought them from Gokula; he arrived in Mathura, as ordered by Kamsa.
तावागत्य तदा तत्र धनुर्भङ्गञ्च चक्रतुः । हत्वाथ रजकं कामं गजं चाणूरमुष्टिकम्
Having arrived there, the two broke the bow, and then, at will, slew the washerman, the elephant, Chanura, and Mushtika.
शलं च तोशलं चैव निजघान हरिस्तदा । जघान कंसं देवेशः केशेष्वाकृष्य लीलया
Hari then slew Śala and Tośala; the Lord of the gods killed Kaṃsa, playfully pulling him by the hair.
पितरौ मोचयित्वाथ गतदुःखौ चकार ह । उग्रसेनाय राज्यं तद्ददावरिनिषूदनः
Having freed his parents, he relieved their suffering; the destroyer of enemies gave the kingdom to Ugrasena.
वसुदेवस्तयोस्तत्र मौञ्जीबन्धनपूर्वकम् । कारयामास विधिवद् व्रतबन्धं महामनाः
There, Vasudeva, with great intent, performed the sacred thread ceremony for the two, according to proper rites, preceded by the tying of the māuñjī grass.
उपनीतौ तदा तौ तु गतौ सान्दीपनालयम् । विद्याः सर्वाः समभ्यस्य मथुरामागतौ पुनः
Then, after their initiation, the two went to the house of Sāndīpani; having mastered all knowledge, they returned again to Mathurā.
जातौ द्वादशवर्षीयौ कृतविद्यौ महाबलौ । मथुरायां स्थितौ वीरौ सुतावानकदुन्दुभेः
When they had reached twelve years of age, accomplished in learning and possessing great strength, the heroic sons of Ānakadundubhi remained in Mathurā.
मागधस्तु जरासन्धो जामातृवधदुःखितः । कृत्वा सैन्यसमाजं स मथुरामागतः पुरीम्
Jarāsandha, king of Magadha, distressed by the killing of his son-in-law, gathered his army and came to the city of Mathurā.
स सप्तदशवारं तु कृष्णेन कृतबुद्धिना । जितः संग्राममासाद्य मधुपुर्यां निवासिना
He was defeated seventeen times in battle by Kṛṣṇa, who dwelled in Madhupurī and acted with resolve.
पश्चाच्च प्रेरितस्तेन स कालयवनाभिधः । सर्वम्लेच्छाधिपः शूरो यादवानां भयङ्करः
Afterwards, prompted by him, Kālayavana, the mighty lord of all mlecchas, became a terror to the Yādavas.
