पतितः पञ्चमे मासि लोकख्यातिं गतस्तदा । कंसोऽपि ज्ञातवांस्तत्र देवकीगर्भपातनम्
Falling in the fifth month, he then became renowned in the world; Kaṃsa also learned of the miscarriage of Devakī's pregnancy.
मुदं प्राप स दुष्टात्मा श्रुत्वा वार्तां सुखावहाम् । अष्टमे देवकीगर्भे भगवान्सात्वतां पतिः
That wicked-minded one rejoiced, hearing the pleasing news; in the eighth pregnancy of Devakī, the Lord, master of the Sātvatas, entered.
उवास देवकार्यार्थं भारावतरणाय च । राजोवाच वसुदेवः कश्यपांशः शेषांशश्च तदाभवत्
He incarnated for the purpose of the gods’ work and to relieve the burden of the earth. The king said: Vasudeva was a portion of Kaśyapa, and Śeṣa also took birth then.
हरेरंशस्तथा प्रोक्तो भवता मुनिसत्तम । अन्ये च येंऽशा देवानां तत्र जातास्तु तान्वद
And you, best of sages, have declared that Hari was also a portion. Tell me about the others who were portions of the gods and were born there.
व्यास उवाच सुराणामसुराणां च ये येंऽशा भुवि विश्रुताः
Vyāsa said: I will tell you of those who were renowned on earth as portions of the gods and the asuras.
तानहं सम्प्रवक्ष्यामि संक्षेपेण शृणुष्व तान् । वसुदेवः कश्यपांशो देवकी च तथादितिः
I will now briefly recount them; listen to them. Vasudeva was a portion of Kaśyapa, and Devakī was a portion of Aditi.
बलदेवस्त्वनन्तांशो वर्तमानेषु तेषु च । योऽसौ धर्मसुतः श्रीमान्नारायण इति श्रुतः
Baladeva was a portion of Ananta, and among those present, the illustrious son of Dharma, known as Nārāyaṇa, was there.
तस्यांशो वासुदेवस्तु विद्यमाने मुनौ तदा । नरस्तस्यानुजो यस्तु तस्यांशोऽर्जुन एव च
Vāsudeva was a portion of him, the sage present at that time; and his younger brother, Nara, was Arjuna, who was also his portion.
युधिष्ठिरस्तु धर्मांशो वाय्वंशो भीम इत्युत । अश्विन्यंशौ ततः प्रोक्तौ माद्रीपुत्रौ महाबलौ
Yudhiṣṭhira was a portion of Dharma, Bhīma was a portion of Vāyu, and the two mighty sons of Mādrī were said to be portions of the Aśvins.
सूर्यांशः कर्ण आख्यातो धर्माशो विदुरः स्मृतः । द्रोणो बृहस्पतेरंशस्तत्सतस्तु शिवांशजः
Karna is said to be a portion of Sūrya, Vidura is remembered as a portion of Dharma, Droṇa is a portion of Bṛhaspati, and Aśvatthāman is a portion of Śiva.
समुद्रः शन्तनुः प्रोक्तो गङ्गा भार्या मता बुधैः । देवकस्तु समाख्यातो गन्धर्वपतिरागमे
Śantanu is said to be a portion of the ocean, and his wife Gaṅgā is recognized by the wise. Devaka is known as the lord of the Gandharvas in the scriptures.
वसुर्भीष्मो विराटस्तु मरुद्गण इति स्मृतः । अरिष्टस्य सुतो हंसो धृतराष्ट्रः प्रकीर्तितः
Bhīṣma was a portion of a Vasu, and Virāṭa is remembered as a Marut. Dhṛtarāṣṭra is said to be Haṃsa, the son of Ariṣṭa.
मरुद्गणः कृपः प्रोक्तः कृतवर्मा तथापरः । दुर्योधनः कलेरंशः शकुनिं विद्धि द्वापरम्
Kṛpa is said to be a Marut, and so is Kṛtavarman. Duryodhana is a portion of Kali, and know Śakuni as Dvāpara.
सोमपुत्रः सुवर्चाख्यः सोमप्ररुरुदाहृतः । पावकांशो धृष्टद्युम्नः शिखण्डी राक्षसस्तथा
Suvarcā, son of Soma, is called Somapraru; Dhṛṣṭadyumna is a portion of Pāvaka, and Śikhaṇḍī is a Rākṣasa.
सनत्कुमारस्यांशस्तु प्रद्युम्नः परिकीर्तितः । द्रुपदो वरुणस्यांशो द्रौपदी च रमांशजा
Pradyumna is said to be a portion of Sanatkumāra; Drupada is a portion of Varuṇa, and Draupadī is born from a portion of Ramā.
द्रौपदीतनयाः पञ्च विश्वेदेवांशजाः स्मृताः । कुन्तिः सिद्धिर्धृतिर्माद्री मतिर्गान्धारराजजा
The five sons of Draupadī are remembered as portions of the Viśvedevās. Kuntī is Siddhi, Dhṛti is Mādrī, and the daughter of the king of Gāndhāra is Mati.
कृष्णपत्न्यस्तथा सर्वा देववाराङ्गनाः स्मृताः । राजानश्च तथा सर्वे असुराः शक्रनोदिताः
All the wives of Kṛṣṇa are remembered as celestial maidens, and all the kings are asuras sent by Indra.
हिरण्यकशिपोरंशः शिशुपाल उदाहृतः । विप्रचित्तिर्जरासन्धः शल्यः प्रह्लाद इत्यपि
Śiśupāla is said to be a portion of Hiraṇyakaśipu; Jarāsandha is Vipracitti, Śalya is Prahlāda.
कालनेमिस्तथा कंसः केशी हयशिरास्तथा । अरिष्टो बलिपुत्रस्तु ककुद्मी गोकुले हतः
Kālanemi, Kaṃsa, Keśī, and Hayaśiras are mentioned; Ariṣṭa is the son of Bali, and Kakudmī was slain in Gokula.
अनुह्लादो धृष्टकेतुर्भगदत्तोऽथ बाष्कलः । लम्बः प्रलम्बः सञ्जातः खरोऽसौ धेनुकोऽभवत्
Anuhlāda is Dhṛṣṭaketu, Bhagadatta is Bāṣkala, Lamba and Pralamba were born, Khara became Dhenuka.
वाराहश्च किशोरश्च दैत्यौ परमदारुणौ । मल्लौ तावेव सञ्जातौ ख्यातौ चाणूरमुष्टिकौ
The two fierce Daityas, Vārāha and Kiśora, were reborn as wrestlers, renowned as Cāṇūra and Muṣṭika.
दितिपुत्रस्तथारिष्टो गजः कुवलयाभिधः । बलिपुत्री बकी ख्याता बकस्तदनुजः स्मृतः
Ariṣṭa, son of Diti, and the elephant named Kuvalayā, as well as Bakī, daughter of Bali, and her brother Baka, became known by those names.
यमो रुद्रस्तथा कामः क्रोधश्चैव चतुर्थकः । तेषामंशैस्तु सञ्जातो द्रोणपुत्रो महाबलः
Yama, Rudra, Kāma, and Krodha—by portions of these, the mighty son of Droṇa was born.
अंशावतरणे पूर्वं दैतेया राक्षसास्तथा । जाताः सर्वे सुरांशास्ते क्षितिभारावतारणे
In previous descents of portions, Daityas and Rākṣasas were all born as parts of the gods, for the removal of the burden of the earth.
एतेषां कथितं राजन्नंशावतरणं नृप । सुराणां चासुराणां च पुराणेषु प्रकीर्तितम्
O King, the descent of these portions has been described to you, as it is celebrated in the Purāṇas concerning both gods and demons.
यदा ब्रह्मादयो देवाः प्रार्थनार्थं हरिं गताः । हरिणा च तदा दत्तौ केशौ खलु सितासितौ
When Brahmā and the other gods went to Hari to pray, Hari then gave them two hairs, one dark and one light.
श्यामवर्णस्ततः कृष्णः श्वेतः सङ्कर्षणस्तथा । भारावतारणार्थं तौ जातौ देवांशसम्भवौ
From these, Kṛṣṇa was born with a dark complexion, and Saṅkarṣaṇa with a fair one; both were born from the portions of the gods for the purpose of relieving the earth's burden.
अंशावतरणं चैतच्छृणोति भक्तिभावतः । सर्वपापविनिर्मुक्तो मोदते स्वजनैर्वृतः
Whoever listens to this account of the descent of portions with devotion is freed from all sins and rejoices, surrounded by their own people.
कंसं प्रति योगमायावाक्यम् व्यास उवाच हतेषु षट्सु पुत्रेषु देवक्या औग्रसेनिना । सप्तमे पतिते गर्भे वचनान्नारदस्य च
Vyāsa said: After Devakī's six sons were killed by Kaṃsa, and upon the seventh pregnancy, following Nārada's words,
अष्टमस्य च गर्भस्य रक्षणार्थमतन्द्रितः । प्रयत्नमकरोद्राजा मरणं स्वं विचिन्तयन्
The king, vigilant to protect the eighth pregnancy, made every effort, constantly thinking of his own death.
