"Fie on greed, the root of sin, the gateway to hell! Even a guru, prompted by sin, speaks falsehood."
"He whose words are authority has now become a pretender; the guru of the gods, the promulgator of all dharma-śāstras."
"What does one not obtain through greed, when the mind is defiled? Another, even a guru, becomes a hypocritical scholar in this way."
The best of twice-born, adopting all the gestures of an actor, deceives the Daityas, and even my sacrificers, who are utterly deluded.
Vyāsa said: The Daityas were deceived by one who had taken my form—what need was there for the guru to do so?
"I am Kāvya, and this is my guru, who brings about the work of the gods."
Do not trust the words of this woman; he is deceitful and intoxicated with pride.
Hearing his words and seeing that the two appeared alike again,
The guru, seeing them greatly agitated, spoke these words:
He has come to deceive you, for the accomplishment of the gods’ purpose.
The knowledge I received from Śambhu, I am now teaching to you.
Hearing the guru’s words, those who had assumed Kāvyā’s form—
By Kāvyā’s many instructions there, the Dānavas were indeed enlightened.
Thus, having made their decision, they then addressed Bhārgava.
For ten years continuously, Bhārgava has been ruling over us.
Having said this, they repeatedly rebuked Bhārgava, being deluded.
But Kāvyā, seeing them thus, became angry and cursed them.
Because, though instructed by me, you do not heed my words—
You will soon reap the fruit of your disrespect toward me.
Vyāsa said: Bṛhaspati, having gained joy, remained there, composed.
Then, knowing that the Daityas had been cursed by Bhārgava,
He went and said to Śakra, 'The task has surely been accomplished by me.'
They have certainly been rendered powerless; now act, O best of gods.
Hearing the guru’s words, Maghavan was filled with joy.
After deliberating together once more, they resolved upon battle.
Recognizing the gods as assembled, prepared, and possessing great strength,
They spoke to one another, bewildered by his illusion.
The sinful teacher, a deceitful pretender to wisdom, has deceived us and departed.
What shall we do, where shall we go, and how can we appease the enraged sage?
Thinking thus, all of them gathered together, trembling with fear.
