As the foremost sage was speaking thus to the divine Nārāyaṇa, all, led by Kāma, came into view at that moment.
The blessed Nārāyaṇa and Nara saw them all; both became filled with wonder in their minds.
They saw Kāma, Menakā, Rambhā, Tilottamā, Puṣpagandhā, Sukeśī, Mahāśvetā, and Manoramā.
They saw Pramadvarā, Dhṛtācī, the expert in song with a lovely smile, Candraprabhā, Somā, adorned with the voice of a cuckoo.
They saw Vidyunmālā and Ambujākṣī, as well as one with a golden garland; and many other women of excellent form appeared near them.
Seeing their number—two thousand and fifty—they were amazed at the vast army of Kāma.
All the divine maidens stood before them, having bowed, adorned with celestial ornaments and shining with divine garlands.
All of them sang with artifice, a song exceedingly rare on earth; thus, that divine assembly, increasing the power of Kāma, remained there.
Then the blessed Viṣṇu, Nara, and Nārāyaṇa heard it; having listened, Nārāyaṇa the sage spoke to them there with affection.
Please sit comfortably here; I will offer you wonderful hospitality. You have come from heaven as guests, O women of lovely form, in accordance with the guest’s duty.
Vyāsa said: At that time, Nārāyaṇa the sage, filled with pride, thought: Surely they have been sent by Indra with the intent to cause an obstacle.
Who are all these unfortunate women? Today I will create new ones; I will show forms more divine than these, demonstrating the power of my austerity.
Thinking thus in his mind, he struck his thigh with his hand, and swiftly produced a woman of exquisite beauty in every limb.
That auspicious woman, born from Narayana's thigh, was named Urvashi; those who were present saw her standing there and were filled with utmost wonder.
Then, for the purpose of serving them, the sage, without hesitation, quickly created as many exceedingly beautiful women as needed.
Singing and laughing, holding various gifts in their hands, all those women bowed to the sages, standing before them with palms joined.
Seeing her, who was the cause of distraction and the glory of asceticism, the divine maidens were bewildered, their minds deeply confused; they spoke, their faces radiant with joy, their own graceful limbs shining with the thrill of goosebumps.
How could we possibly praise the greatness of your asceticism and your steadfastness, beholding you, O youths? Who, struck by the sharp arrow of your sidelong glance, would not feel pain in their mind?
We know you both to be the supreme portions of Narahari, divine sages, ever possessing the treasures of tranquility and self-control; our coming here is only for service, not out of desire, but to fulfill the work of Hari, the lord of sacrifices.
By what fortune has your sight been granted to us? We do not know how this was accumulated. Our minds, devoted to our own kind, have been made fit by you; for those like us, who have sinned, the torment has been removed.
The gods, of great power, never waste their asceticism by giving curses with trivial results. Vyasa said: Hearing the words of the celestial maidens, the two eminent sages replied to them, who were bowed in humility.
With faces pleased and serene, having conquered desire and greed, sons of Dharma, their bodies shining with the radiance of their own asceticism, Narayana and Nara said: Speak your desired wishes; we shall grant them, our minds satisfied.
Let them go to heaven, taking this Urvashi with beautiful eyes; this maiden is your gift, depart today, O enchanting ones.
Born from our thighs for the delight of Maghavan, Urvashi is given; may all the gods fare well, and let them depart as they wish.
(Henceforth, no one should cause any hindrance to asceticism.) The goddesses said: Where shall we go, O greatly fortunate one? We have reached your lotus feet, O Narayana, best of gods, with supreme devotion and joy.
If you, O Lord, grant the boon we desire, O Madhusudana, pleased and lotus-eyed, we shall speak what is wished in our hearts.
Become our husband, O Lord of gods, grant us this boon, O destroyer of foes; let us, filled with affection, serve you, O Lord of the universe.
There are other beautiful-eyed women created by you; let Urvashi and the rest go to heaven by your command.
Let sixteen thousand and five hundred women remain here; we shall serve you two, the foremost ascetics, here.
Grant the desired boon, O Lord of gods, be truthful, O Madhava; for the breaking of hope is said to be harm to women.
