नित्यं भूमौ च शयनं कुमारीणां च पूजनम् । वस्त्रालङ्करणैर्दिव्यैर्भोजनैश्च सुधामयैः
Daily, bedding should be placed on the ground, and the worship of young girls carried out, with divine garments and ornaments, and with nectar-like foods.
एकैकां पूजयेन्नित्यमेकवृद्ध्या तथा पुनः । द्विगुणं त्रिगुणं वाऽपि प्रत्येकं नवकं च वा
Each girl should be worshipped daily, first singly, then again with double or triple the offerings, or with nine for each, as desired.
विभवस्यानुसारेण कर्तव्यं पूजनं किल । वित्तशाठ्यं न कर्तव्यं राजञ्छक्तिमखे सदा
Worship should be performed according to one's means; deceit regarding wealth should never be practiced, O king, in the ritual of power.
एकवर्षा न कर्तव्या कन्या पूजाविधौ नृप । परमज्ञा तु भोगानां गन्धादीनां च बालिका
A girl of one year should not be worshipped in the ritual, O king; the girl who is most knowledgeable in enjoying fragrances and similar pleasures is to be selected.
कुमारिका तु सा प्रोक्ता द्विवर्षा या भवेदिह । त्रिमूर्तिश्च त्रिवर्षा च कल्याणी चतुरब्दिका
The girl who is two years old is called Kumārikā; three years old is Trimūrti; four years old is Kalyāṇī.
रोहिणी पञ्चवर्षा च षड्वर्षा कालिका स्मृता । चण्डिका सप्तवर्षा स्यादष्टवर्षा च शाम्भवी
Five years old is Rohiṇī; six years old is Kālikā; seven years old is Caṇḍikā; eight years old is Śāmbhavī.
नववर्षा भवेद्दुर्गा सुभद्रा दशवार्षिकी । अत ऊर्ध्वं न कर्तव्या सर्वकार्यविगर्हिता
Nine years old is Durgā; ten years old is Subhadrā; beyond that, worship should not be performed, as it is disapproved in all rites.
एभिश्च नामभिः पूजा कर्तव्या विधिसंयुता । तासां फलानि वक्ष्यामि नवानां पूजने सदा
Worship should be performed with these names, according to the prescribed method; I will now speak of the fruits of worshipping these nine.
कुमारी पूजिता कुर्याद्दुःखदारिद्रयनाशनम् । शत्रुक्षयं धनायुष्यं बलवृद्धिं करोति वै
Worshipping Kumārikā destroys sorrow and poverty, brings the destruction of enemies, wealth, longevity, and increases strength.
त्रिमूर्तिपूजनादायुस्त्रिवर्गस्य फलं भवेत् । धनधान्यागमश्चैव पुत्रपौत्रादिवृद्धयः
By worshipping Trimūrti, one attains longevity and the fruits of the three goals of life, as well as the acquisition of wealth and grain, and growth of sons and grandsons.
विद्यार्थी विजयार्थी च राज्यार्थी यश्च पार्थिवः । सुखार्थी पूजयेन्नित्यं कल्याणीं सर्वकामदाम्
A seeker of knowledge, victory, kingdom, or happiness should always worship Kalyāṇī, who grants all desires.
कालिकां शत्रुनाशार्थं पूजयेद्भक्तिपूर्वकम् । ऐश्वर्यधनकामश्च चण्डिकां परिपूजयेत्
Kālikā should be worshipped with devotion for the destruction of enemies; one desiring prosperity and wealth should worship Caṇḍikā thoroughly.
पूजयेच्छाम्भवीं नित्यं नृपसंमोहनाय च । दुःखदारिद्र्यनाशाय सङ्ग्रामे विजयाय च
Śāmbhavī should be worshipped daily for the king's enchantment, for the removal of sorrow and poverty, and for victory in battle.
क्रूरशत्रुविनाशार्थं तथोग्रकर्मसाधने । दुर्गाञ्च पूजयेद्भक्त्या परलोकसुखाय च
Durgā should be worshipped with devotion for the destruction of cruel enemies, for the accomplishment of fierce deeds, and for happiness in the next world.
वाञ्छितार्थस्य सिद्ध्यर्थं सुभद्रां पूजयेत्सदा । रोहिणीं रोगनाशाय पूजयेद्विधिवन्नरः
For the attainment of desired objectives, one should always worship Subhadra; and for the destruction of disease, a man should properly worship Rohini.
श्रीरस्त्विति च मन्त्रेण पूजयेद्भक्तितत्परः । श्रीयुक्तमन्त्रैरथवा बीजमन्त्रैरथापि वा
With the mantra 'Śrīḥ', one devoted to worship should offer worship, either with mantras endowed with Śrī or with seed-mantras as well.
कुमारस्य च तत्त्वानि या सृजत्यपि लीलया । कादीनपि च देवांस्तां कुमारीं पूजयाम्यहम्
I worship that Kumari who, even in play, creates the principles of Kumara and also those deities beginning with Ka.
सत्त्वादिभिस्त्रिमूर्तिर्या तैर्हि नानास्वरूपिणी । त्रिकालव्यापिनी शक्तिस्त्रिमूर्तिं पूजयाम्यहम्
She who is the Trimurti through sattva and other qualities, who assumes many forms through them, who is the power pervading the three times—I worship that Trimurti.
कल्याणकारिणी नित्यं भक्तानां पूजिताऽनिशम् । पूजयामि च तां भक्त्या कल्याणीं सर्वकामदाम्
She who always brings auspiciousness, who is constantly worshipped by devotees—I worship with devotion that Kalyani, fulfiller of all desires.
रोहयन्ती च बीजानि प्राग्जन्मसञ्चितानि वै । या देवी सर्वभूतानां रोहिणीं पूजयाम्यहम्
She who causes the seeds accumulated from previous births to sprout, who is the goddess Rohini of all beings—I worship her.
काली कालयते सर्वं ब्रह्माण्डं सचराचरम् । कल्पान्तसमये या तां कालिकां पूजयाम्यहम्
Kali, who measures out all the universe, both moving and unmoving, at the end of the aeon—I worship that Kalika.
तां चण्डपापहरणीं चण्डिकां पूजयाम्यहम्
I worship that Chandika who destroys terrible sins.
अकारणात्समुत्पत्तिर्यन्मयैः परिकीर्तिता । यस्यास्तां सुखदां देवीं शाम्भवीं पूजयाम्यहम्
She whose origin is said by the wise to be without cause, who bestows happiness—I worship that goddess Shambhavi.
दुर्गात्त्रायति भक्तं या सदा दुर्गातिनाशिनी । दुर्ज्ञेया सर्वदेवानां तां दुर्गां पूजयाम्यहम्
She who always saves the devotee from danger, who destroys difficulties, who is hard to know even for all the gods—I worship that Durga.
सुभद्राणि च भक्तानां कुरुते पूजिता सदा । अभद्रनाशिनीं देवीं सुभद्रां पूजयाम्यहम्
She who always brings auspiciousness to devotees when worshipped, who destroys inauspiciousness—I worship that goddess Subhadra.
एभिर्मन्त्रैः पूजनीयाः कन्यकाः सर्वदा बुधैः । वस्त्रालङ्करणैर्माल्यैर्गन्धैरुच्चावचैरपि
With these mantras, maidens should always be worshipped by the wise, with garments, ornaments, garlands, fragrances, whether simple or elaborate.
देवीपूजामहत्त्ववर्णनम् व्यास उवाच हीनाङ्गीं वर्जयेत्कन्यां कुष्ठयुक्तां व्रणाङ्किताम् । गन्धस्फुरितहीनाङ्गीं विशालकुलसम्भवाम्
One should avoid a maiden who is deformed, afflicted with leprosy, marked by wounds, lacking fragrance or with swollen limbs, or born in a widely known family.
जात्यन्धां केकरां काणां कुरूपां बहुरोमशाम् । सन्त्यजेद्रोगिणीं कन्यां रक्तपुष्पादिनाङ्किताम्
One should reject a maiden who is blind by birth, has a shrill voice, is one-eyed, ugly, excessively hairy, diseased, or marked by red flowers and the like.
क्षामां गर्भसमुद्भूतां गोलकां कन्यकोद्भवाम् । वर्जनीयाः सदा चैताः सर्वपूजादिकर्मसु
One who is emaciated, born from pregnancy complications, or of round form, or born from a maiden—these should always be avoided in all acts of worship and the like.
अरोगिणीं सुरूपाङ्गीं सुन्दरीं व्रणवर्जिताम् । एकवंशसमुद्भूतां कन्यां सम्यक्प्रपूजयेत्
A maiden who is healthy, with beautiful limbs, lovely, free from wounds, and born in a single lineage, should be properly worshipped.
