Usually, kings give their daughters only to those equal in wealth, lineage, and strength. No one would give a virtuous and beautiful daughter to a prince who is destitute.
Having made enmity with all powerful and eminent kings, you have given your daughter Sudarshana to me. How can I describe your courage?
Hearing these words, the king, delighted, with folded hands, spoke again: 'Take my renowned kingdom; today I shall become your commander.'
If not, then accept half of it here, and enjoy the fruits of the kingdom with your son. Leaving residence in Varanasi, I have no desire for dwelling in the city or the forest.
There are indeed kings who are angry; I will first go and offer reconciliation. Afterwards, I will try two other means; if those fail, then I shall wage war.
Victory and defeat are subject to fate; yet, in righteousness, victory is assured, not in unrighteousness. What will become of those kings who act unrighteously is yet to be considered.
Hearing his meaningful speech, she spoke words beneficial to him. Receiving honor from him, Manoramā was filled with joy and contentment.
O king, may you have auspiciousness; rule the kingdom, casting aside fear, together with your sons. My son, having obtained the kingdom, will surely reign here in the city of Sāketa.
Send us away to our own homes; Bhavani will arrange everything auspicious for you. O King, I have no worry at all, for I am contemplating the Supreme Mother.

The faults have been dispelled by various sweet and nectar-like words exchanged among us; but in the morning, the kings, having learned of the completed marriage, went outside the city in anger and spoke thus.
Today itself, let us kill that king who bears the stain of royalty, and that boy who is not fit for marriage; let us seize Shashikala, the fortune of the king, and, having lost our honor, how can we return to our own homes?
Listen to the sounds of the musical instruments being played, the conch blasts are overpowered by the drums; there are various songs and the chanting of Vedic hymns—we think the marriage has been performed here by the king.
He deceived us with words and performed the hand-holding ceremony according to proper marriage rites; now, let the kings consider what must be done and agree among themselves on a course of action.
While the kings were speaking thus, the king of Kashi, of incomparable power, performed the marriage rites for his daughter and quickly went to invite the kings, accompanied by his renowned friends.
Seeing the king of Kashi approaching, the kings stood in silence, restraining their anger, and did not say anything.
He went to them, bowed with joined palms, and said: 'All the kings must come to my house for a meal.'
This king has been chosen by the maiden; what can I do, whether it is good or bad? You are all great and compassionate men—let the proper thing be done by you.
Hearing his words, the kings, filled with anger, replied: 'We have eaten; O king, return to your own house.'
Do all the remaining tasks as you wish; what was to be done has been done. Today, all the kings will return to their own homes.
Hearing this, Subahu too, anxious and uncertain, went home, wondering what the angry and agitated great kings would do.
After he left, the kings again made an agreement: 'Let us block the road, seize the maiden, and kill Sudarshana.'
Some said, 'What concern do we have with that king? Having seen all the spectacle, we will depart as we came.'
Having said this, all the kings stood blocking the road; Subahu went home to carry out his remaining duties.

Description of Subahu's praise of the Goddess. Vyasa said: He arranged for them food worthy of honor, prepared properly, and for six days the king served them with devotion.
Thus, having completed all the marriage rites, the king gave the dowry and then consulted with his ministers.
Hearing from the messengers that the road had been blocked, King Subahu, of immeasurable splendor, became dejected.
Sudarshana, steadfast in his vow, spoke to his father-in-law: 'Release us quickly; we shall depart without fear.'
After reaching the sacred hermitage of Bharadvaja, we must carefully consider our residence there, O king.
O blameless one, you need not fear any king; Bhavani, the Mother of the world, will assist me.
Vyasa said: Understanding his son-in-law's resolve, the noble king released him, gave him wealth, and departed swiftly.
