पुरा श्रुतं मया स्वामिन्पाण्डवा वै वने स्थिताः । मुनीनामाश्रमे पुण्ये पाञ्चाल्या सहितास्तदा
'O master, I once heard that the Pāṇḍavas, together with Pāñcālī, were staying in the hermitage of the sages during their time in the forest.'
गतास्ते मृगयां पार्था भ्रातरः पञ्च एव ते । द्रौपदी संस्थिता तत्र मुनीनामाश्रमे शुभे
'Those five brothers, the sons of Pāṇḍu, had gone hunting, and Draupadī remained there in the auspicious hermitage of the sages.'
धौम्योऽत्रिर्गालवः पैलो जावालिर्गौतमो भृगुः । च्यवनश्चात्रिगोत्रश्च कण्वश्चैव जतुः क्रतुः
'There were Dhaumya, Atri, Gālava, Paila, Jāvāli, Gautama, Bhṛgu, Cyavana, Ātri's descendant, Kaṇva, Jatu, and Kratu.'
वीतिहोत्रः सुमन्तुश्च यज्ञदत्तोऽथ वत्सलः । राशासनः कहोडश्च यवक्रीर्यज्ञकृत्क्रतुः
'Vītihotra, Sumantu, Yajñadatta, Vatsala, Rāśāsana, Kahoḍa, Yavakrī, Yajñakṛt, and Kratu were also present.'
एते चान्ये च मुनयो भारद्वाजादयः शुभाः । वेदपाठयुताः सर्वे संस्थिताश्चाश्रमे स्थिताः
'These and other auspicious sages, beginning with Bhāradvāja, all well-versed in the Vedas, were residing in the hermitage.'
दासीभिः सहिता तत्र याज्ञसेनी स्थिता मुने । आश्रमे चारुसर्वाङ्गी निर्भया मुनिसंवृते
'There, Yājñasenī, beautiful in every limb, stayed in the hermitage with her maidservants, fearless among the sages.'
पार्था मृगानुगास्तावत्प्रयाताश्च वनाद्वनम् । धनुर्बाणधरा वीराः पञ्च वै शत्रुतापनाः
'Meanwhile, the Pāṇḍavas, those five heroic brothers armed with bows and arrows, went from forest to forest in pursuit of game, tormentors of their foes.'
तावत्सिन्धुपतिः श्रीमान्मार्गस्थो बलसंयुतः । आगतश्चाश्रमाभ्याशे श्रुत्वा तु निगमन्ध्वनिम्
'At that time, the illustrious lord of Sindhu, accompanied by his army, arrived near the hermitage, having heard the sound of the sacred recitation.'
श्रुत्वा वेदध्वनिं राजा मुनीनां भावितात्मनाम् । उत्ततार रथात्तूर्णं दर्शनाकाङ्क्षया नृपः
'Hearing the sound of the Vedas chanted by the sages of pure mind, the king quickly descended from his chariot, eager for a meeting.'
यदा निरगमत्तत्र भृत्यद्वयसमन्वितः । वेदपाठयुतान्वीक्ष्य मुनीनुद्यमसंस्थितः
When he came out there, accompanied by two attendants, he saw the sages engaged in Vedic recitation, all intent on their practice.
कृताञ्जलिपुटः स्वामिन्संस्थितोऽथ जयद्रथः । आश्रमे मुनिभिर्जुष्टे भूपतिः संविवेश ह
With hands joined in reverence, Jayadratha stood before the master and entered the hermitage, which was filled with sages.
तत्रोपविष्टं राजानं द्रष्टुकामाः स्त्रियस्तदा । आययुर्मुनिभार्याश्च कोऽयमित्यब्रुवन्नृपम्
There, wishing to see the king who was seated, the women and wives of the sages approached and asked, 'Who is this?'
तासां मध्ये वरारोहा याज्ञसेनी समागता । जयद्रथेन दृष्टा सा रूपेण श्रीरिवापरा
Among them, the beautiful Yajnaseni arrived; seen by Jayadratha, she appeared as another goddess of fortune in her beauty.
तां विलोक्यासितापाङ्गीं देवकन्यामिवापराम् । पप्रच्छ नृपतिर्धौम्यं केयं श्यामा वरानना
Beholding her, dark-eyed and resembling a divine maiden, the king asked Dhaumya, 'Who is this dark-skinned, lovely-faced woman?'
भार्या कस्य सुता कस्य नाम्ना का वरवर्णिनी । रूपलावण्यसंयुक्ता शचीव वसुधाङ्गता
Whose wife is she, whose daughter, and what is her name, this woman of exquisite form, endowed with beauty and grace, like Shachi among mortals?
बर्बूलवनमध्यस्था लवङ्गलतिका यथा । राक्षसीवृन्दगा नूनं रम्भेवाभाति भामिनी
Standing amidst the grove like a clove creeper, she shines among the rakshasi women just as Rambha does, O radiant one.
सत्यं वद महाभाग कस्येयं वल्लभाबला । राजपत्नीव चाभाति नैषा मुनिवधूर्द्विज
Tell me truly, O fortunate one, whose beloved is this youthful woman? She appears as a royal wife, not a sage's spouse, O twice-born.
धौम्य उवाच पाण्डवानां प्रिया भार्या द्रौपदी शुभलक्षणा । पाञ्चाली सिन्धुराजेन्द्र वसत्यत्र वराश्रमे
Dhaumya said: She is Draupadi, beloved wife of the Pandavas, blessed with auspicious marks, O king of Sindhu; the Panchali resides here in this noble hermitage.
जयद्रथ उवाच क्व गताः पाण्डवाः पञ्च शूराः सम्प्रति विश्रुताः । वसन्त्यत्र वने वीरा वीतशोका महाबलाः
Jayadratha said: Where have the five renowned Pandavas gone now? Do those mighty heroes dwell here in the forest, free from sorrow?
धौम्य उवाच मृगयार्थं गताः पञ्च पाण्डवा रथसंस्थिताः । आगमिष्यन्ति मध्यान्हे मृगानादाय पार्थिवाः
Dhaumya said: The five Pandavas have gone hunting, riding in their chariots; they will return at midday, bringing game, O king.
तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं तस्य उदतिष्ठदसौ नृपः । द्रौपदीसन्निधौ गत्वा प्रगम्येदमुवाच ह
Hearing these words, the king rose and, approaching Draupadi, went near and spoke thus.
कुशलं ते वरारोहे क्व गताः पतयश्च ते । एकादश गतान्यद्य वर्षाणि च वने किल
Are you well, O beautiful one? Where have your husbands gone? Eleven years have passed in the forest, it is said.
द्रौपदी तु तदोवाच स्वस्ति तेऽस्तु नृपात्मज । विश्रमस्वाश्रमाभ्याशे क्षणादायान्ति पाण्डवाः
Draupadi then replied: May you be blessed, prince; rest near the hermitage, for the Pandavas will return shortly.
एवं ब्रुवन्त्यां तस्यां तु लोभाविष्टः स भूपतिः । जहार द्रौपदीं वीरोऽनादृत्य मुनिसत्तमान्
As she spoke thus, the king, overcome by desire, seized Draupadi, disregarding the eminent sages.
कस्यचिन्नैव विश्वासः कर्तव्यः सर्वथा बुधैः । कुर्वन्दुःखमवाप्नोति दृष्टान्तस्त्वत्र वै बलिः
One should never place trust in anyone, say the wise; those who do so suffer, as is shown by the example of Bali.
वैरोचनसुतः श्रीमान्धर्मिष्ठः सत्यसङ्गरः । यज्ञकर्ता च दाता च शरण्यः साधुसंमतः
The illustrious son of Virocana, Dharmishtha, steadfast in truth, performer of sacrifices, giver, refuge, and esteemed by the virtuous.
नाधर्मे निरतः क्वापि प्रल्हादस्य च पौत्रकः । एकोनशतयज्ञान्वै स चकार सदक्षिणान्
Never engaged in unrighteousness anywhere, grandson of Prahlada, he performed ninety-nine sacrifices with proper gifts.
सत्त्वमूर्त्तिः सदा विष्णुः सेव्यः स योगिनामपि । निर्विकारोऽपि भगवान्देवकार्यार्थसिद्धये
Always of sattvic nature, Vishnu is worshipped even by yogis; though changeless, the Lord acts for the fulfillment of the gods' purposes.
कश्यपाच्च समुद्भूतो विष्णुः कपटवामनः । राज्यं छलेन हृतवान्महीं चैव ससागराम्
From Kaśyapa was born Viṣṇu, the deceptive dwarf Vāmana, who seized the kingdom and the earth, along with its oceans, by trickery.
सोऽभवत्सत्यवाग्राजा बलिर्वैरोचनिस्तदा । कपटं कृतवान्विष्णुरिन्द्रार्थे तु मया श्रुतम्
At that time, Bali, son of Virocana, was a king who spoke truthfully; yet Viṣṇu acted deceitfully for Indra’s sake, as I have heard.
