He who is Hari is directly Shiva, and Shiva himself is Hari. Whoever establishes a distinction between these two becomes destined for hell.
Similarly, the Creator is to be understood in the same way; there should be no deliberation about this. There is another difference of qualities; listen, O Vishnu, I will tell you.
Let the primary quality of sattva be yours for contemplation of the Supreme Self. Even in secondary roles, the two are known as possessing rajas and tamas.
Always, in transformations and various distinctions together with Lakshmi, you should enjoy with her, being endowed with the quality of rajas.
The seed of speech, the king of desire, and the third, the seed of maya—this mantra, O beloved of Rama, given by me, grants the highest reality.
Having received it, recite it always and enjoy as you wish. You will have no fear of death, O Vishnu, nor any fear arising from time.
As long as this play of mine continues, it is certain. When I withdraw, I will take back everything, both moving and unmoving in the universe.
Then, surely, you all will merge into me. This mantra must always be remembered; it grants desires and also liberation.
It should be performed together with the chant of udgitha by one desiring auspiciousness. After establishing Vaikuntha, O Supreme Person, you must reside there.
Enjoy as you wish, contemplating me, the Eternal One. Brahma said: Having spoken thus to Vasudeva, the supreme Prakriti, possessed of the three qualities,
the Devi, now beyond qualities, spoke immortal words to Shiva. The Devi said: Take Haragauri, the enchanting Mahakali.
Having established Kailasa, enjoy as you wish. Let your primary quality be tamas, and the secondary ones be sattva and rajas.
Enjoy for the destruction of demons, with rajas and tamas. Also, perform austerity and remembrance of the Supreme Self.
The quality of sattva, peaceful, must always be accepted, O sinless one. In every way, you three are the causes of creation, preservation, and destruction.
In this world, there is nowhere any substance devoid of these; whatever is seen as mere substance in the world is indeed composed of the three qualities.
In this world, that which is seen as without qualities has never existed nor will exist; the Supreme Self is without qualities, but is never an object of perception.
O best of Śiva, I am both with qualities and without qualities, according to the circumstance; I am always the cause, O Śambhu, and never the effect.
With qualities, I am the cause; without qualities, I am near the Spirit; the great principle, ego, the qualities, and also sound and the rest—
These move about day and night in the forms of cause and effect.
Ego is my effect, established as threefold; from ego arises the great principle, which is called intellect.
The great principle is indeed the effect, and ego is the cause; from ego, the subtle elements are always produced.
It is the cause of the five elements, from which all arise; and the five organs of action and the five organs of knowledge.
The five great elements and the mind as the sixteenth; this group of sixteen is both effect and cause.
The Supreme Self, the original Person, is neither effect nor cause; thus is the origin of all at the beginning, O Śambhu.
In brief, I have explained to you the origin there; now, O best ones, go by the chariot for my purpose.
By remembrance, I will grant you a vision when you are in difficulty; always remember me, O gods, as the eternal Supreme Self.
By remembrance from both sides, success in action is certain; Brahmā said: Having thus spoken, she dismissed us, having given us well-prepared powers.
To Viṣṇu, Mahālakṣmī; to Śiva, Mahākālī; to me, Mahāsarasvatī; thus, from her place, she sent them forth.
Having reached another place, we became persons; reflecting on that form and its supremely wondrous power.
Having reached that chariot, the three of us were established there; that was not an island, nor was that goddess there, nor the ocean of nectar.
