एवंविधानि रूक्षाणि श्रावयत्यनुवासरम् । आश्वासयति धर्मात्मा मूर्खोऽयमिति च ब्रुवन्
Such harsh words he made him hear day after day; but the righteous one would comfort him, saying, "This one is a fool."
अष्टादशैव वर्षाणि स्थित्वा तत्रैव दुःखितः । धृतराष्ट्रो वने यानं प्रार्थयामास धर्मजम्
After remaining there in sorrow for eighteen years, Dhritarashtra asked Yudhishthira, son of Dharma, for permission to go to the forest.
अयाचत धर्मपुत्रं धृतराष्ट्रो महीपतिः । पुत्रेभ्योऽहं ददाम्यद्य निर्वापं विधिपूर्वकम्
Dhritarashtra, the king, requested the son of Dharma: "Today I wish to offer the prescribed oblation for my sons."
वृकोदरेण सर्वेषां कृतमत्रौर्ध्वदैहिकम् । न कृतं मम पुत्राणां पूर्ववैरमनुस्मरन्
"Bhima has performed the funeral rites for all here, but not for my sons, remembering former enmity."
ददासि चेद्धनं मह्यं कृत्वा चैवोर्ध्वदैहिकम् । गमिष्येऽहं वनं तप्तुं तपः स्वर्गफलप्रदम्
"If you give me wealth and perform the funeral rites, I will go to the forest to practice austerities that grant the fruit of heaven."
एकान्ते विदुरेणोक्तो राजा धर्मसुतः शुचिः । धनं दातुं मनश्चक्रे धृतराष्ट्राय चार्थिने
In private, at Vidura's urging, the pure-hearted son of Dharma resolved to give wealth to the supplicant Dhritarashtra.
समाहूय निजान्मर्वानुवाच पृथिवीपतिः । धनं दास्ये महाभागाः पित्रे निर्वापकामिने
Summoning his own ministers, the lord of the earth said, "O blessed ones, I will give wealth to my father, who desires the funeral offering."
तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं भ्रातुर्न्येष्ठस्यामिततेजसः । संग्रहेऽस्य महाबाहुर्मारुतिः कुपितोऽब्रवीत्
Hearing the words of his eldest brother, of immeasurable energy, Hanuman, mighty-armed, became angry and spoke during the gathering.
धनं देयं महाभाग दुर्योधनहिताय किम् । अन्धोऽपि सुखमाप्नोति मूर्खत्वं किमतः परम्
Wealth should be given, O greatly fortunate one, for Duryodhana's benefit—what more? Even a blind man attains happiness; what could be greater foolishness than this?
तव दुर्मन्त्रितेनाथ दुःखं प्राप्ता वने वयम् । द्रौपदी च महाभागा समानीता दुरात्मना
Because of your ill counsel, we have suffered hardship in the forest, and the greatly blessed Draupadi was brought away by the wicked one.
विराटभवने वासः प्रसादात्तव सुव्रत । दासत्वं च कृतं सर्वैर्मत्स्यस्यामितविक्रमैः
By your favor, O steadfast one, we lived in the house of Virata, and all of us became servants to the mighty Matsya.
देविता त्वं न चेज्ज्येष्ठः प्रभवेत्संक्षयः कथम् । सूपकारो विराटस्य हत्वाभूवं तु मागधम्
If you had not been queen, how could destruction have been avoided? I became the cook for Virata, having slain the Magadha.
बृहन्नला कथं जिष्णुर्भवेद्बालस्य नर्तकः । कृत्वा वेषं महाबाहुर्योषाया वासवात्मजः
How could Brihannala, the victorious one, become a dancer for a child? The mighty-armed son of Vasava, taking the guise of a woman.
गाण्डीवशोभितौ हस्तौ कृतौ कङ्कणशोभितौ । मानुषं च वपुः प्राप्य किं दुःखं स्यादतः परम्
Hands adorned with Gandiva were made to shine with bangles; having assumed a human form, what greater sorrow could there be than this?
दृष्ट्वा वेणीं कृतां मूर्ध्नि कज्जलं लोचने तथा । असिं गृहीत्वा तरसा छेद्म्यहं नान्यथा सुखम्
Seeing the braid made on the head and kohl in the eyes, seizing the sword swiftly, I will cut—otherwise, there is no happiness.
अपृष्ट्वा च महीपालं निक्षिप्तोऽग्निर्मया गृहे । दग्धुकामश्च पापात्मा निर्दग्धोऽसौ पुरोचनः
Without asking the king, I placed fire in the house; wishing to burn, the evil-minded Purocana was burned up.
कीचका निहताः सर्वे त्वामपृष्ट्वा जनाधिप । न तथा निहताः सर्वे सभार्या धृतराष्ट्रजाः
All the Kichakas were slain without asking the lord of men; not so were all the sons of Dhritarashtra slain along with their wives.
मूर्खत्वं तव राजेन्द्र गन्धर्वेभ्यश्च मोचिताः । दुर्योधनादयः कामं शत्रवो निगडीकृताः
Your foolishness, O king, freed us from the Gandharvas; Duryodhana and others, though enemies, were bound as captives.
दुर्योधनहितायाद्य धनं दातुं त्वमिच्छसि । नाहं ददे महीपाल सर्वथा प्रेरितस्त्वया
Today you wish to give wealth for Duryodhana's benefit; O king, I will not give, even though urged by you in every way.
इत्युक्त्वा निर्गते भीमे त्रिभिः परिवृतो नृपः । ददौ वित्तं सुबहुलं धृतराष्ट्राय धर्मजः
Having spoken thus, Bhima departed, surrounded by three; the righteous son of Dharma gave abundant wealth to Dhritarashtra.
कारयामास विधिवत्पुत्राणां चौर्ध्वदैहिकम् । ददौ दानानि विप्रेभ्यो धृतराष्ट्रोऽम्बिकासुतः
He performed the funeral rites for the sons according to custom, and Dhritarashtra, son of Ambika, gave gifts to the Brahmins.
कृत्वौर्ध्वदैहिकं सर्वं गान्धारीसहितो नृपः । प्रविवेश वनं तूर्णं कुन्त्या च विदुरेण च
Having completed all the funeral rites, the king, together with Gandhari, quickly entered the forest, along with Kunti and Vidura.
सञ्जयेन परिज्ञातो निर्गतोऽसौ महामतिः । पुत्रैर्निवार्यमाणापि शूरसेनसुता गता
Recognized by Sanjaya, the wise one departed; though restrained by her sons, the daughter of Shurasena went.
विलपन्भीमसेनोऽपि तथान्ये चापि कौरवाः । गङ्गातीरात्परावृत्य ययुः सर्वे गजाह्वयम्
Bhimasena lamented, and so did the other Kauravas; turning back from the banks of the Ganga, they all went to Hastinapura.
ते गत्वा जाह्नवीतीरे शतयूपाश्रमं शुभम् । कृत्वा तृणैः कुटीं तत्र तपस्तेपुः समाहिताः
Having gone to the banks of the Jahnavi, to the auspicious hermitage of Shatayupa, they built a hut there with grass and practiced austerities with concentration.
गतान्यब्दानि षट् तेषां यदा याता हि तापसाः । युधिष्ठिरस्तु विरहादनुजानिदमब्रवीत्
Six years passed for them; when the ascetics departed, Yudhishthira, due to separation, spoke thus.
स्वप्ने दृष्टा मया कुन्ती दुर्बला वनसंस्थिता । मनो मे जायते द्रष्टुं मातरं पितरौ तथा
In a dream, I saw Kunti, weak and dwelling in the forest; my mind longs to see my mother and father as well.
विदुरं च महात्मानं सञ्जयं च महामतिम् । रोचते यदि वः सर्वान् व्रजाम इति मे मतिः
If you all desire, let us go to see Vidura, the great soul, and Sanjaya, the wise one; this is my thought.
ततस्ते भ्रातरः सर्वे सुभद्रा द्रौपदी तथा । वैराटी च महाभागा तथा नागरिको जनः
Then all the brothers, Subhadra, Draupadi, the blessed princess of Virata, and the citizens of the city gathered together.
प्राप्ताः सर्वजनैः सार्धं पाण्डवा दर्शनोत्सुकाः । शतयूपाश्रमं प्राप्य ददृशुः सर्व एव ते
The Pandavas, eager for a meeting, arrived with all the people and, reaching the hermitage of Shatayupa, saw everyone there.
