अस्माभिः परमेशानी सेव्यते ध्यानयोगतः । प्रसन्ना सा भगवती साहाय्यं ते करिष्यति
'We will serve the Supreme Lady through meditation and yoga; if she is pleased, the Blessed Goddess will grant you assistance.'
इत्यादिश्य गुरुं सर्वे जग्मुर्जाम्बूनदेश्वरीम् । सास्मान्दैत्यभयत्रस्तान् पालयिष्यति शोभना
Thus instructing the teacher, they all went to the Lady of Jambunada; that Auspicious One will protect us, who are terrified by the fear of the demon.
तत्र गत्वा तपश्चर्यां चक्रुः सर्वे सुनिष्ठिताः । मायाबीजजपासक्ता देवीमखपरायणाः
Going there, they all undertook austerities with firm resolve; absorbed in the recitation of the seed-mantra of Maya, devoted to the worship of the Goddess.
बृहस्पतिस्तदा शीघ्रं जगामासुरसन्निधौ । आगतं मुनिवर्यं तं पप्रच्छाथ स दैत्यराट्
Then Brihaspati quickly went to the presence of the demon; seeing the eminent sage arrive, the demon king questioned him.
मुने कुत्रागमः कस्मात्किमर्थमिति मे वद । नाहं युष्मत्पक्षपाती प्रत्युतारातिरेव च
'O sage, why have you come here, for what reason, and for what purpose? Tell me. I am not partial to your side; in fact, I am your enemy.'
इति तस्य वचः श्रुत्वा प्रोवाच मुनिनायकः । अस्मत्सेव्या च या देवी सा त्वया पूज्यतेऽनिशम्
Hearing his words, the chief of sages replied: 'The very Goddess whom we serve is the one you worship constantly.'
तस्मादस्मत्पक्षपाती न भवेस्त्वं कथं वद । इति तस्य वचः श्रुत्वा मोहितो देवमायया
Therefore, tell me, how could you not be partial to our side? Hearing these words, he was bewildered by the divine illusion.
तत्याज परमं मन्त्रमभिमानेन सत्तम । गायत्रीत्यागतो दैत्यो निस्तेजस्को बभूव ह
Out of pride, the excellent Daitya abandoned the supreme mantra; having forsaken the Gayatri, he became devoid of brilliance.
कृतकार्यो गुरुस्तस्मात्स्थानान्निर्गतवान्पुनः । ततो वृत्तान्तमखिलं कथयामास वज्रिणे
Having accomplished his task, the guru departed from that place; then he narrated the entire event to the wielder of the thunderbolt.
संतुष्टास्ते सुराः सर्वे भेजिरे परमेश्वरीम् । एवं बहुगते काले कस्मिंश्चित्समये मुने
All the gods, satisfied, worshipped the Supreme Goddess; thus, after much time had passed, at some moment, O sage—
प्रादुरासीज्जगन्माता जगन्मङ्गलकारिणी । कोटिसूर्यप्रतीकाशा कोटिकन्दर्पसुन्दरी
The Mother of the Universe, the bestower of auspiciousness upon the world, appeared; radiant like millions of suns, beautiful as millions of Cupids.
चित्रानुलेपना देवी चित्रवासोयुगान्विता । विचित्रमाल्याभरणा चित्रभ्रमरमुष्टिका
The Goddess was adorned with wondrous ointments and splendid garments; she wore marvelous garlands and ornaments, and held a cluster of bees.
वराभयकरा शान्ता करुणामृतसागरा । नानाभ्रमरसंयुक्तपुष्पमालाविराजिता
She granted boons and dispelled fear, tranquil and an ocean of compassionate nectar; she shone with garlands of flowers interwoven with various bees.
भ्रामरीभिर्विचित्राभिरसंख्याभिः समावृता । भ्रमरैर्गायमानैश्च ह्रींकारमनुमन्वहम्
She was surrounded by countless, diverse bees; and bees, singing the syllable 'hrīṃ', accompanied her constantly.
समन्ततः परिवृता कोटिकोटिभिरम्बिका । सर्वशृङ्गारवेषाढ्या सर्ववेदप्रशंसिता
Ambika was encircled on all sides by millions upon millions; adorned in all forms of beauty, praised by all the Vedas.
सर्वात्मिका सर्वमयी सर्वमङ्गलरूपिणी । सर्वज्ञा सर्वजननी सर्वा सर्वेश्वरी शिवा
She is the essence of all, pervading all, the embodiment of all auspiciousness; omniscient, mother of all, all-encompassing, sovereign of all, auspicious.
दृष्ट्वा तां तरलात्मानो देवा ब्रह्मपुरोगमाः । तुष्टुवुर्हृष्टमनसो विष्टरश्रवसां शिवाम्
Seeing her, the gods led by Brahma, their minds stirred, praised Shiva with joyful hearts and expansive voices.
देवा ऊचुः नमो देवि महाविद्ये सृष्टिस्थित्यन्तकारिणि । नमः कमलपत्राक्षि सर्वाधारे नमोऽस्तु ते
The gods said: Salutations to you, O Goddess, O great wisdom, creator, sustainer, and destroyer; salutations to you, lotus-eyed, foundation of all.
सविश्वतैजसप्राज्ञविराट्सूत्रात्मिके नमः । नमो व्याकृतरूपायै कूटस्थायै नमो नमः
Salutations to you, who are the essence of the cosmic intellect, the Virat, and the Sutra; salutations to you, of manifest form, abiding in the highest.
दुर्गे सर्गादिरहिते दुष्टसंरोधनार्गले । निरर्गलप्रेमगम्ये भर्गे देवि नमोऽस्तु ते
O Durga, beyond creation and its beginning, unimpeded in restraining the wicked; accessible through boundless love, O radiant Goddess, salutations to you.
नमः श्रीकालिके मातर्नमो नीलसरस्वति । उग्रतारे महोग्रे ते नित्यमेव नमो नमः
Salutations to you, O auspicious Kali, O Mother; salutations to you, O blue Sarasvati; O fierce Tara, O greatly formidable one, constant salutations to you.
नमः पीताम्बरे देवि नमस्त्रिपुरसुन्दरि । नमो भैरवि मातङ्गि धूमावति नमो नमः
Salutations to you, O Goddess clad in yellow; salutations to you, O beauty of Tripura; salutations to you, O Bhairavi, Matangi, Dhumavati, again and again.
छिन्नमस्ते नमस्तेऽस्तु क्षीरसागरकन्यके । नमः शाकम्भरि शिवे नमस्ते रक्तदन्तिके
Salutations to you, O Chinnamasta; O daughter of the ocean of milk, salutations; O Shakambhari, O auspicious one, O red-toothed, salutations to you.
निशुम्भशुम्भदलनि रक्तबीजविनाशिनि । धूम्रलोचननिर्णाशे वृत्रासुरनिबर्हिणि
Destroyer of Nishumbha and Shumbha, annihilator of Raktabija; vanquisher of Dhumralochana, suppressor of the Vritra demon.
चण्डमुण्डप्रमथिनि दानवान्तकरे शिवे । नमस्ते विजये गङ्गे शारदे विकचानने
Salutations to you, O fierce destroyer of Chanda and Munda, ender of demons, O auspicious one! Salutations to you, O victorious one, O Ganga, O Sharada, O one with a radiant face.
पृथ्वीरूपे दयारूपे तेजोरूपे नमो नमः । प्राणरूपे महारूपे भूतरूपे नमोऽस्तु ते
Homage again and again to you in the form of the earth, in the form of compassion, in the form of light; to you in the form of life-breath, in the great form, in the form of all beings—salutations to you.
विश्वमूर्ते दयामूर्ते धर्ममूर्ते नमो नमः । देवमूर्ते ज्योतिमूर्ते ज्ञानमूर्ते नमोऽस्तु ते
Homage again and again to you, who are the form of the universe, the form of compassion, the form of righteousness; to you, the form of divinity, the form of light, the form of knowledge—salutations to you.
गायत्रि वरदे देवि सावित्रि च सरस्वति । नमः स्वाहे स्वधे मातर्दक्षिणे ते नमो नमः
O goddess, bestower of boons, Gāyatrī, Sāvitrī, Sarasvatī—salutations to you! O Svāhā, Svadhā, O mother, O Dakṣiṇā, repeated salutations to you.
नेति नेतीति वाक्यैर्या बोध्यते सकलागमैः । सर्वप्रत्यक्स्वरूपां तां भजामः परदेवताम्
She who is indicated by the words 'not this, not this' in all the scriptures, who is the direct form of all—her, the supreme goddess, we worship.
भ्रमरैर्वेष्टिता यस्माद् भ्रामरी या ततः स्मृता । तस्यै देव्यै नमो नित्यं नित्यमेव नमो नमः
Because she is surrounded by bees, she is thus remembered as Bhṛāmarī; to that goddess, constant salutations, ever and always, salutations again and again.
