एवं ते वर्णितं साधो सावर्णेर्जन्म कर्म च । एतत्पठंस्तथा शृण्वन्देव्यनुग्रहमाप्नुयात्
Thus, O holy one, the birth and deeds of Sāvarṇi have been described to you; whoever reads or hears this attains the grace of the Goddess.
भ्रामरीचरित्रवर्णनम् श्रीनारायण उवाच अथातः श्रूयतां शेषमनूनां चित्रमुद्भवम् । यस्य स्मरणमात्रेण देवीभक्तिः प्रजायते
The account of Bhrāmarī is now described. Śrī Nārāyaṇa said: Now, listen to the wondrous origin of the remaining Manus; by merely remembering it, devotion to the Goddess arises.
आसन्वैवस्वतमनोः पुत्राः षड् विमलोदयाः । करूषश्च पृषध्रश्च नाभागो दिष्ट एव च
The sons of Vaivasvata Manu were six, pure and illustrious: Karūṣa, Pṛṣadhra, Nābhāga, and Diṣṭa—
शर्यातिश्च त्रिशङ्कुश्च सर्व एव महाबलाः । ततः षडेव ते गत्वा कालिन्द्यास्तीरमुत्तमम्
Śaryāti and Triśaṅku as well—all of them were mighty; then, those six went to the excellent bank of the Kālindī river.
निराहारा जितश्वासाः पूजां चक्रुस्ततः स्थिताः । देव्या महीमयीं मूर्तिं विनिर्माय पृथक्पृथक्
Having conquered their breath and abstained from food, they stood and performed worship, each fashioning a separate image of the goddess from earth.
विविधैरुपचारैस्तां पूजयामासुरादृताः । ततश्च सर्व एवैते तपःसारा महाबलाः
With various offerings, they worshipped her with reverence; and all these ascetics, endowed with great strength, were the essence of austerity.
जीर्णपर्णाशना वायुभक्षणास्तोयजीवनाः । धूम्रपाना रश्मिपानाः क्रमशश्च बहुश्रमाः
They subsisted on dried leaves, lived on air, survived on water, consumed smoke, absorbed sun rays, and endured much hardship in succession.
ततस्तेषामादरेणाराधनं कुर्वतां सदा । विमला मतिरुत्पन्ना सर्वमोहविनाशिनी
As they continually performed worship with devotion, a pure intellect arose within them, destroying all delusion.
बभूवुर्मनुपुत्रास्ते देवीपादैकचिन्तनाः । मत्या विमलया तेषामात्मन्येवाखिलं जगत्
Those sons of Manu became absorbed in single-minded contemplation of the goddess's feet; with their pure intellect, they perceived the entire world within themselves.
दर्शनं सञ्जगामाशु तदद्भुतमिवाभवत् । एवं द्वादशवर्षान्ते तपसा जगदीश्वरी
A vision appeared to them swiftly, wondrous in nature; thus, at the end of twelve years, the Lady of the Universe was revealed through their austerity.
प्रादुर्बभूव देवेशी सहस्रार्कसमद्युतिः । तां दृष्ट्वा विमलात्मानो राजपुत्राः षडेव ते
The Queen of the Gods manifested, radiant like a thousand suns; seeing her, those six royal sons became pure in soul.
तुष्टुवुर्भक्तिनम्रान्तःकरणा भावसंयुताः । राजपुत्रा ऊचुः महेश्वरि जयेशानि परमे करुणालये
They praised her, their hearts bowed in devotion and filled with feeling; the royal sons spoke: 'Great Lady, Victorious One, Supreme Abode of Compassion!'
वाग्भवाराधनप्रीते वाग्भवप्रतिपादिते । क्लींकारविग्रहे देवि क्लींकारप्रीतिदायिनि
Delighted by the worship of Vagbhava and revealed through Vagbhava, O goddess whose form is the syllable 'klīṃ', giver of joy to those devoted to 'klīṃ'.
कामराजमनोमोददायिनीश्वरतोषिणि । महामाये मोदपरे महासाम्राज्यदायिनि
Giver of delight to the mind of Kāmarāja, pleasing to the Lord; O great Māyā, supreme in joy, bestower of great sovereignty.
विष्ण्वर्कहरशक्रादिस्वरूपे भोगवर्धिनि । एवं स्तुता भगवती राजपुत्रैर्महात्मभिः
In the forms of Vishnu, Surya, Shiva, Indra, and others, you increase enjoyment; thus praised by the royal sons, the blessed goddess—great-souled.
प्रसादसुमुखी देवी प्रोवाच वचनं शुभम् । देव्युवाच राजपुत्रा महात्मानो भवन्तस्तपसा युताः
The goddess, her face radiant with grace, spoke auspicious words; the goddess said: 'Royal sons, you are great-souled and endowed with austerity.'
निष्कल्मषाः शुद्धधियो जाता वै मदुपासनात् । वरं मनोगतं सर्वं याचध्वमविलम्बितम्
You have become free from blemish and pure in mind through my worship; ask for any boon you desire, without delay.
प्रसन्नाहं प्रदास्यामि युष्माकं मनसि स्थितम् । राजपुत्रा ऊचुः देवि निष्कण्टकं राज्यं सन्ततिश्चिरजीविनी
I am pleased and will grant whatever is fixed in your minds; the royal sons said: 'O goddess, may our kingdom be free from thorns, and our lineage long-lived.'
भोगा अव्याहता कामं यशस्तेजो मतिश्च ह । अकुण्ठितत्वं सर्वेषामेष एव वरो हितः
May our enjoyments be unobstructed as we wish, may we have fame, brilliance, and wisdom; let there be unimpeded prosperity for all—this is the boon we seek.
देव्युवाच एवमस्तु च सर्वेषां भवतां यन्मनोगतम् । अथान्यदपि मे वाक्यं भूयतामादरादिदम्
The goddess said: 'So be it, for all of you, whatever is in your minds; now let me speak another word, attended with respect.'
भवन्तः सर्व एवैते मन्वन्तरपतीश्वराः । सन्तत्या दीर्घया भोगैरनेकैरपि सङ्गमः
All of you will become lords of the Manvantaras; with long-lasting progeny and many enjoyments, you will have abundant union.
अखण्डितबलैश्वर्यं यशस्तेजोविभूतयः । भवितारो मत्प्रसादाद्राजपुत्राः क्रमेण तु
With unbroken strength and sovereignty, fame, brilliance, and glory, you royal sons will attain these by my grace, each in turn.
श्रीनारायण उवाच एवं तेभ्यो वरान्दत्त्वा भ्रामरी जगदम्बिका । अन्तर्धानं जगामाशु भक्त्या तैः संस्तुता सती
Śrī Nārāyaṇa said: Thus, having granted them boons, Bhrāmarī, the Mother of the Universe, swiftly vanished from sight, being praised with devotion by them.
ते राजपुत्राः सर्वेऽपि तस्मिञ्जन्मन्यनुत्तमम् । राज्यं महीगतान्भोगान्बुभुजुश्च महौजसः
All those royal princes, in that very birth, enjoyed supreme sovereignty and the pleasures of the earth, endowed with great power.
सन्ततिं चाखण्डितां ते समुत्पाद्य महीतले । वंशं संस्थाप्य सर्वेऽपि मनूनां पतयोऽभवन्
They all produced an unbroken lineage upon the earth, established their dynasties, and became lords among the Manus.
भवान्तरे क्रमेणैव सावर्णिपदभागिनः । प्रथमो दक्षसावर्णिर्नवमो मनुरीरितः
In subsequent existences, they attained the status of Sāvarṇi Manus; the first was called Dakṣa Sāvarṇi, known as the ninth Manu.
अव्याहतबलो देव्याः प्रसादादभवद्विभुः । द्वितीयो मेरुसावर्णिर्दशमो मनुरेव च
By the grace of the Goddess, he became mighty, with strength unobstructed; the second was Meru Sāvarṇi, who is the tenth Manu.
बभूव मन्वन्तरपो महादेवीप्रसादतः । तृतीयो मनुराख्यातः सूर्यसावर्णिनामकः
He became the lord of a Manvantara by the great Goddess’s favor; the third Manu is named Sūrya Sāvarṇi.
एकादशो महोत्साहस्तपसा स्वेन भावितः । चतुर्थश्चन्द्रसावर्णिर्द्वादशो मनुराड् विभुः
The eleventh, endowed with great energy and perfected by his own austerity, is Candra Sāvarṇi as the fourth, and the twelfth Manu is a mighty king.
देवीसमाराधनेन जातो मन्वन्तरेश्वरः । पञ्चमो रुद्रसावर्णिस्त्रयोदशमनुः स्मृतः
By worship of the Goddess, he became lord of a Manvantara; the fifth is Rudra Sāvarṇi, remembered as the thirteenth Manu.
