भस्मसात्तं चकाराशु हुङ्कारेण महेश्वरी । ततः सैन्यं वाहनेन देव्या भग्नं महीपते
With a roar, the great goddess instantly reduced him to ashes; then, O king, the goddess destroyed his army with her vehicle.
दिशो दशाभजच्छीघ्रं हाहाभूतमचेतनम् । तद्वृत्तान्तं समाश्रुत्य स शुम्भो दैत्यराड् विभुः
The army scattered swiftly in all directions, becoming unconscious and crying out; hearing this account, Shumbha, the lord of the demons, was informed.
चुकोप च महाकोपाद् भ्रुकुटीकुटिलाननः । ततः कोपपरीतात्मा दैत्यराजः प्रतापवान्
He became furious, his face twisted with rage; then, possessed by anger, the powerful demon king was inflamed.
चण्डं मुण्डं रक्तबीजं क्रमतः प्रैषयद्विभुः । ते च गत्वा त्रयो दैत्या विक्रान्ता बहुविक्रमाः
He sent forth Chanda, Munda, and Raktabija in turn; those three mighty demons, renowned for their valor, went forth.
देवीं ग्रहीतुमारब्धयत्नास्ते ह्यभवन्बलात् । तानापतत एवासौ जगद्धात्री मदोत्कटा
They began their attempt to seize the goddess by force; but as they attacked, the fierce world-protecting goddess confronted them.
शूलं गहीत्वा वेगेन पातयामास भूतले । ससैन्यान्निहताञ्छ्रुत्वा दैत्यांस्त्रीन्दानवेश्वरौ
Seizing her spear, she hurled it swiftly to the ground; hearing of the demons and their armies being slain, the two demon lords were informed.
शुम्भश्चैव निशुम्भश्च समाजग्मतुरोजसा । निशुम्भश्चैव शुम्भश्च कृत्वा युद्धं महोत्कटम्
Both Śumbha and Niśumbha came forth with great vigor; and Niśumbha as well as Śumbha engaged in a fierce and terrible battle.
देव्याश्च वशगौ जातौ निहतौ च तयासुरौ । इति दैत्यवरं शुम्भं घातयित्वा जगन्मयी
And both those demons were subdued and slain by the Goddess; thus, after killing the foremost demon Śumbha, the All-pervading One—
विबुधैः संस्तुता तद्वत्साक्षाद्वागीश्वरी परा । एवं ते वर्णितो राजन् प्रादुर्भावोऽतिरम्यकः
—was praised by the gods, and likewise by the supreme Goddess of Speech herself; O King, in this way, her most wondrous manifestation has been described.
काल्याश्चैव महालक्ष्याः सरस्वत्याः क्रमेण च । परा परेश्वरी देवी जगत्सर्गं करोति च
In the forms of Kālī, Mahālakṣmī, and Sarasvatī in succession, the supreme Lady, the Goddess, creates the universe.
पालनं चैव संहारं सैव देवी दधाति हि । तां समाश्रय देवेशीं जगन्मोहनिवारिणीम्
She alone, the Goddess, upholds the universe, and brings about its dissolution; take refuge in that Lady of the gods, who dispels the delusion of the world.
महामायां पूज्यतमां सा कार्यं ते विधास्यति । श्रीनारायण उवाच इति राजा वचः श्रुत्वा मुनेः परमशोभनम्
That Great Māyā, most worthy of worship, will accomplish your purpose; Śrī Nārāyaṇa said: Thus, hearing the most excellent words of the sage—
देवीं जगाम शरणं सर्वकामफलप्रदाम् । निराहारो यतात्मा च तन्मनाश्च समाहितः
The king sought refuge in the Goddess, who grants all desires; fasting, self-controlled, with mind fixed, and fully concentrated.
देवीमूर्तिं मृण्मयीं च पूजयामास भक्तितः । पूजनान्ते बलिं तस्यै निजगात्रासृजं ददत्
He worshipped the clay image of the Goddess with devotion; at the end of the worship, he offered as oblation his own bodily blood.
तदा प्रसन्ना देवेशी जगद्योनिः कृपावती । प्रादुर्बभूव पुरतो वरं ब्रूहीति भाषिणी
Then, the Lady of the gods, the source of the universe, full of compassion, appeared before him, pleased, and spoke: 'Ask for a boon.'
स राजा निजमोहस्य नाशनं ज्ञानमुत्तमम् । राज्यं निष्कण्टकं चैव याचति स्म महेश्वरीम्
That king requested from the great Goddess the destruction of his own delusion, supreme knowledge, and a kingdom free from obstacles.
देव्युवाच राजन्निष्कण्टकं राज्यं ज्ञानं वै मोहनाशनम् । भविष्यति मया दत्तमस्मिन्नेव भवे तव
The Goddess said: 'O King, a kingdom free from obstacles, knowledge that destroys delusion—these will be granted by me to you in this very life.'
अन्यच्च शृणु भूपाल जन्मान्तरविचेष्टितम् । भानोर्जन्म समासाद्य सावर्णिर्भविता भवान्
And listen further, O ruler of the earth, to the deeds of your future birth: attaining the birth of Bhānu, you will become Sāvarṇi.
तत्र मन्वन्तरस्यापि पतित्वं बहुविक्रमम् । सन्ततिं बहुलां चापि प्राप्स्यते मद्वराद्भवान्
There, in that Manvantara, you will attain the position of Manu with great prowess, and by my boon you will obtain a large and prosperous lineage.
एवं दत्त्वा वरं देवी जगामादर्शनं तदा । सोऽपि देव्याः प्रसादेन जातो मन्वन्तराधिपः
Thus, after granting the boon, the Goddess disappeared; and by her grace, he became the lord of the Manvantara.
एवं ते वर्णितं साधो सावर्णेर्जन्म कर्म च । एतत्पठंस्तथा शृण्वन्देव्यनुग्रहमाप्नुयात्
Thus, O holy one, the birth and deeds of Sāvarṇi have been described to you; whoever reads or hears this attains the grace of the Goddess.
भ्रामरीचरित्रवर्णनम् श्रीनारायण उवाच अथातः श्रूयतां शेषमनूनां चित्रमुद्भवम् । यस्य स्मरणमात्रेण देवीभक्तिः प्रजायते
The account of Bhrāmarī is now described. Śrī Nārāyaṇa said: Now, listen to the wondrous origin of the remaining Manus; by merely remembering it, devotion to the Goddess arises.
आसन्वैवस्वतमनोः पुत्राः षड् विमलोदयाः । करूषश्च पृषध्रश्च नाभागो दिष्ट एव च
The sons of Vaivasvata Manu were six, pure and illustrious: Karūṣa, Pṛṣadhra, Nābhāga, and Diṣṭa—
शर्यातिश्च त्रिशङ्कुश्च सर्व एव महाबलाः । ततः षडेव ते गत्वा कालिन्द्यास्तीरमुत्तमम्
Śaryāti and Triśaṅku as well—all of them were mighty; then, those six went to the excellent bank of the Kālindī river.
निराहारा जितश्वासाः पूजां चक्रुस्ततः स्थिताः । देव्या महीमयीं मूर्तिं विनिर्माय पृथक्पृथक्
Having conquered their breath and abstained from food, they stood and performed worship, each fashioning a separate image of the goddess from earth.
विविधैरुपचारैस्तां पूजयामासुरादृताः । ततश्च सर्व एवैते तपःसारा महाबलाः
With various offerings, they worshipped her with reverence; and all these ascetics, endowed with great strength, were the essence of austerity.
जीर्णपर्णाशना वायुभक्षणास्तोयजीवनाः । धूम्रपाना रश्मिपानाः क्रमशश्च बहुश्रमाः
They subsisted on dried leaves, lived on air, survived on water, consumed smoke, absorbed sun rays, and endured much hardship in succession.
ततस्तेषामादरेणाराधनं कुर्वतां सदा । विमला मतिरुत्पन्ना सर्वमोहविनाशिनी
As they continually performed worship with devotion, a pure intellect arose within them, destroying all delusion.
बभूवुर्मनुपुत्रास्ते देवीपादैकचिन्तनाः । मत्या विमलया तेषामात्मन्येवाखिलं जगत्
Those sons of Manu became absorbed in single-minded contemplation of the goddess's feet; with their pure intellect, they perceived the entire world within themselves.
दर्शनं सञ्जगामाशु तदद्भुतमिवाभवत् । एवं द्वादशवर्षान्ते तपसा जगदीश्वरी
A vision appeared to them swiftly, wondrous in nature; thus, at the end of twelve years, the Lady of the Universe was revealed through their austerity.
