Seeing the act of the Brahmins, she smiled in her heart; even today, her face is seen with a smile.
With a smiling lotus-face, she spoke to that best of sages: 'Milk offered to a serpent becomes poison.'
'Bring peace, O highly fortunate one; such is the outcome of action.' Having bowed to the goddess, he then went to his own hermitage.
Then, by the curse of the Brahmins, the collections of the Vedas were forgotten; Gāyatrī was forgotten by all, and this became a wonder.
Then all of them, united and filled with deep remorse, prostrated themselves flat on the ground before that eminent sage.
They did not utter a single word, standing with faces lowered in shame, only repeating again and again, 'Be gracious, be gracious, be gracious.'
Surrounding the lordly sage, they fearfully pleaded with him; the sage, his heart full of compassion, spoke to them.
Your stay in Kumbhipaka will last until the end of Krishna's incarnation; know for certain that my words will not prove false.
After that, in the Kali age, you will be born on earth; all this that I have spoken will surely come to pass, and not otherwise.
If you desire release from my curse, then all of you must always worship the lotus feet of Gayatri.
Vyasa said: Thus, after dismissing them all, the noble sage Gautama, thinking that what was destined had begun, attained peace in his mind.
For this reason, O King, when the wise Krishna departed and the Kali age began, they emerged from Kumbhipaka.
Those Brahmins who were formerly burned by the curse were born on earth, lacking the three daily Sandhyas and devoid of devotion to Gayatri.
Lacking devotion to the Vedas, following heretical doctrines, deprived of proper rituals like Agnihotra and the offerings of svadha and svaha.
They never know the unmanifest primal nature; some are marked with heated seals, others delight in sensual practices.
Some are Kapalikas, Kaulas, Buddhists, or Jains; even those learned in texts are all engaged in wicked conduct.
They are lustful with others' wives, devoted to evil deeds; all of them will again go to Kumbhipaka because of their own actions.
Therefore, O King, the Supreme Goddess must be worshipped with all one's being; constant worship of Vishnu or Shiva is not the way.
Only constant worship of Shakti prevents a fall; in brief, I have told you everything you asked, O sinless one.
Now, listen to the beautiful description of Mani-dvipa, the supreme abode of the Primal Lady, the Mistress of the World.
Vyasa said: Above Brahma's world is a realm known to all, called Mani-dvipa, where the Goddess shines forth.
Because it surpasses all, it is called the world of all; long ago, the Supreme Mother created it by her own will.
In the very beginning, for her own dwelling, by her own primordial nature, she created a world superior to Kailāsa and even more excellent than Vaikuṇṭha.
This world is said to surpass even Goloka and all other worlds; nowhere in the three worlds is there anything as beautiful as that.
Serving as a canopy for the three worlds, it removes the suffering of existence; it alone stands as a shelter for the best of the universes.
Surrounding Maṇidvīpa on all sides is the pure ocean, vast for many yojanas and deep to that extent.
It is crowded with hundreds of waves raised by the wind, filled with sands of jewels, and teeming with fish and conch shells.
Cooled by the spray of waves colliding together, it is adorned with various flags and traversed by many kinds of ships coming and going.
All around, the great shore shines with jewel trees; beyond that, in the sky, stands a wall made of celestial metals.
There is a great enclosure seven yojanas wide, equipped with various weapons and skilled warriors of many kinds.
