दक्षिणाद्घृतभागात्तु वह्नेर्दक्षिणलोचने । जुहुयादग्नये स्वाहेत्येवं वै वामतोऽन्यतः
From the southern portion of the ghee, into the right eye of the fire, he should offer, saying 'Agni, svāhā'; likewise, from the left side, another offering.
सोमाय स्वाहेति मध्याद्घृतमादाय सत्तम । अग्नीषोमाभ्यां स्वाहेति मध्यनेत्रे हुनेत्ततः
Taking ghee from the middle, O noble one, he should offer with 'Soma, svāhā'; then, into the central eye, with 'Agni and Soma, svāhā', he should offer.
पुनर्दक्षिणभागात्तु घृतमादाय वै मुखे । अग्नये स्विष्टकृत्स्वाहेत्यनेनैव हुनेत्ततः
Again, taking ghee from the southern portion, into the mouth, he should offer with 'Agni, Sviṣṭakṛt, svāhā' in this way.
सताराभिर्व्याहृतिभिर्जुहुयादथ साधकः । जुहुयादग्निमन्त्रेण त्रिवारं तु ततः परम्
Then, with the syllables of Tārā and the vyāhṛtis, the practitioner should offer; then, with the fire mantra, he should offer three times.
ततस्तु प्रणवेनैवाप्यष्टावष्टौ घृताहुतीः । गर्भाधानादिसंस्कारकृते तु जुहुयान्मुने
Afterwards, with the praṇava, he should offer eight or sixteen ghee oblations for the rites beginning with conception, O sage.
गर्भाधानं पुंसवनं सीमन्तोन्नयनं ततः । जातकर्म नामकर्माप्युपनिष्क्रमणं तथा
Conception, quickening, parting of the hair, then birth rites, naming, and the first outing likewise.
अन्नाशनं तथा चूडा व्रतबन्धस्तथैव च । महानाम्न्यं व्रतं पश्चात्तथौपनिषदं व्रतम्
Eating food, the first haircut, the vow of wearing the sacred thread, then the great vow, and afterwards the Upanishadic vow.
गोदानोद्वाहकौ प्रोक्ताः संस्काराः श्रुतिचोदिताः । ततः शिवं पार्वतीं च पूजयित्वा विसर्जयेत्
Gift of a cow and marriage are declared as rites prescribed by the scriptures; then, having worshipped Śiva and Pārvatī, he should dismiss them.
जुहुयात्पञ्च समिधो वह्निमुद्दिश्य साधकः । पश्चादावरणानां चाप्येकैकामाहुतिं हुनेत्
The practitioner should offer five sticks of fuel into the fire, and then make a single oblation for each of the surrounding deities.
घृतं स्रुचि समादाय चतुर्वारं स्रुवेण च । पिधाय तां तु तेनैव मुने तिष्ठन्निजासने
Taking ghee with a ladle, and four times with the spoon, he should cover it and remain seated in his own seat, O sage.
वौषडन्तेन मनुना वह्नेस्तु जुहुयात्ततः । महागणेशमन्त्रेण जुहुयादाहुतीर्दश
Then, reciting the mantra ending with 'vauṣaṭ', he should offer into the fire; with the great Gaṇeśa mantra, he should make ten oblations.
वह्नौ पीठं समभ्यर्च्य देयमन्त्रस्य देवताम् । वह्नौ ध्यात्वा तु तद्वक्त्रे पञ्चविंशतिसंख्यया
After duly worshipping the seat in the fire, and meditating on the deity of the mantra to be given, he should contemplate that deity in the fire's mouth and offer twenty-five oblations.
मूलमन्त्रेण जुहुयाद्वक्त्रैकीकरणाय च । वह्निदेवतयोरैक्यं भावयन्नात्मना सह
He should offer oblations with the root mantra for the unification of the mouth, contemplating the union of the fire deity and the mantra deity along with himself.
एकीभूतं भावयेत्तु ततस्तु साधकोत्तमः । षडङ्गं देवतानां च जुहुयादाहुतीः पृथक्
Then, the best of practitioners should meditate on that unity, and separately offer oblations to the six-limbed forms of the deities.
एकादशैव जुहुयादाहुतीर्मुनिसत्तम । एतेन नाडीसन्धानं वह्निदेवतयोर्मुने
He should offer exactly eleven oblations, O best of sages; by this, the channels of connection between the fire and the deity are established, O sage.
एकैकक्रमयोगेनाप्यावृत्तीनां तथैव च । एकैकक्रमयोगेन घृतेन जुहुयान्मुने
In the same way, by the method of sequential order for each repetition, he should offer ghee in the same sequential manner, O sage.
ततः कल्पोक्तद्रव्यैस्तु जुहुयादथवा तिलैः । देवतामूलमन्त्रेण गजान्तकसहस्रकम्
Then, with the substances prescribed by the ritual, or with sesame seeds, he should offer a thousand oblations with the root mantra of the deity, ending with 'gajāntaka'.
एवं हुत्वा ततो देवीं सन्तुष्टां भावयेन्मुने । तथैवावृतिदेवीश्च वह्न्याद्या देवता अपि
Having thus offered, he should then meditate on the Goddess as being satisfied, O sage; likewise, on the deities of the coverings, and the fire and other deities.
ततः शिष्यं च सुस्नातं कृतसम्यादिकक्रियम् । वस्त्रद्वययुतं स्वर्णाभरणेन समन्वितम्
Then, the disciple, having bathed well and performed the proper preliminary rites, adorned with two garments and gold ornaments,
कमण्डलुकरं शुद्धं कुण्डस्यान्तिकमानयेत् । नमस्कृत्य ततः शिष्यो गुरूनथ सभासदः
Holding a water pot and purified, he should be brought near the altar; then, the disciple should bow to the teachers and the assembly.
कुलदेवं नमस्कृत्य विशेत्तत्राथ विष्टरे । गुरुस्ततस्तु तं शिष्यं कृपादृष्ट्या विलोकयेत्
After bowing to the family deity, he should enter and sit on the seat there; then the teacher should look upon the disciple with a compassionate gaze.
तच्चैतन्यं निजे देहे भावयेत्सङ्गतं त्विति । ततः शिष्यतनुस्थानामध्वनां परिशोधनम्
He should contemplate that consciousness as united with his own body; then, the purification of the paths in the disciple's body is performed.
कुर्यात्तु होमतो विद्वान्दिव्यदृष्ट्यवलोकनात् । येन जायेत शुद्धात्मा योग्यो देवाद्यनुग्रहे
The learned one should perform this after the homa, by means of divine vision; by this, the self becomes pure and fit for the grace of the deities and others.
श्रीनारायण उवाच तनौ ध्यायेत्तु शिष्यस्य षडध्वनः कमेण तु । पादयोस्तु कलाध्वानमन्धौ तत्त्वाध्वकं पुनः
Śrī Nārāyaṇa said: He should meditate in the disciple's body on the six paths in order: at the feet, the path of kalā; at the knees, the path of tattva.
नाभौ तु भुवनाध्वानं वर्णाध्वानं तथा हृदि । पदाध्वानं तथा भाले मन्त्राध्वानं तु मूर्धनि
At the navel, the path of worlds; at the heart, the path of syllables; at the forehead, the path of words; and at the crown, the path of mantras.
शिष्यं स्पृशंस्तु कूर्चेन तिलैराज्यपरिप्लुतैः । शोधयाम्यमुमध्वानं स्वाहेति मनुमुच्चरन्
Touching the disciple with a bunch of sacred grass dipped in sesame and ghee, he should purify those paths, reciting the mantra 'svāhā'.
ताराढ्यं जुहुयादष्टवारं प्रत्यध्वमेव हि । षडध्वनस्ततस्तांस्तु लीनान् ब्रह्मणि भावयेत्
One should offer oblations to Tārā eight times for each path; then, one should contemplate those six paths as dissolved in Brahman.
पुनरुत्पादयेत्तस्मात्सृष्टिमार्गेण वै गुरुः । आत्मस्थितं तच्चैतन्यं पुनः शिष्ये तु योजयेत्
Then, by the path of creation, the teacher should again generate that consciousness established in the self, and unite it once more with the disciple.
पूर्णाहुतिं ततो हुत्वा देवतां कलशे नयेत् । पुनर्व्याहृतिभिर्हुत्वा वह्नेरङ्गाहुतीस्तथा
After offering the complete oblation, the deity should be led into the vessel; then, having offered with the sacred utterances, one should also make offerings of the fire’s limbs.
एकैकशो गुरुर्दत्त्वा विसृजेद्वह्निमात्मनि । ततः शिष्यस्य नेत्रे तु बध्नीयाद्वाससा गुरुः
The teacher, having given each offering, should release the fire into himself; then, the teacher should bind the disciple’s eyes with a cloth.
