सन्ध्यासु चार्घ्यदानं च गायत्रीजपमेव च । सहस्रत्रितयं कुर्वन्सुरैः पूज्यो भवेन्मुने
At the times of twilight, offering water and reciting the Gayatri, performing this three thousand times, one becomes worthy of worship by the gods, O sage.
न्यासान्करोतु वा मा वा गायत्रीमेव चाभ्यसेत् । ध्यात्वा निर्व्याजया वृत्त्या सच्चिदानन्दरूपिणीम्
Let one perform the ritual placements, or not; but let one practice the Gayatri, meditating with sincere intent upon Her who is the form of existence, consciousness, and bliss.
यदक्षरैकसंसिद्धेः स्पर्धते ब्राह्मणोत्तमः । हरिशङ्करकञ्जोत्थसूर्यचन्द्रहुताशनैः
When a foremost Brahmin attains perfection in a single syllable, he rivals the lotus-born Hari, Shankara, the Sun, the Moon, and Fire.
अथातः श्रूयतां ब्रह्मन् वर्णऋष्यादिकांस्तथा । छन्दांसि देवतास्तद्वत्क्रमात्तत्त्वानि चैव हि
Now, O Brahmin, listen to the sequence of the letters, sages, meters, deities, and likewise the principles, in order.
वामदेवोऽत्रिर्वसिष्ठः शुक्रः कण्वः पराशरः । विश्वामित्रो महातेजाः कपिलः शौनको महान्
Vamadeva, Atri, Vasishtha, Shukra, Kanva, Parashara, Vishvamitra of great brilliance, Kapila, and Shaunaka the great—
याज्ञवल्क्यो भरद्वाजो जमदग्निस्तपोनिधिः । गौतमो मुद्गलश्चैव वेदव्यासश्च लोमशः
Yajnavalkya, Bharadvaja, Jamadagni, the treasury of austerity, Gautama, Mudgala, Vedavyasa, and Lomasha—
अगस्त्यः कौशिको वत्सः पुलस्त्यो माण्डुकस्तथा । दुर्वासास्तपसां श्रेष्ठो नारदः कश्यपस्तथा
Agastya, Kaushika, Vatsa, Pulastya, Manduka, Durvasa, foremost among ascetics, Narada, and Kashyapa—
इत्येते ऋषयः प्रोक्ता वर्णानां क्रमशो मुने । गायत्र्युष्णिगनुष्टुप् च बृहती पङ्क्तिरेव च
These sages are declared, O sage, in order for the letters; Gayatri, Ushnik, Anushtubh, Brihati, and Pankti—
त्रिष्टुभं जगती चैव तथातिजगती मता । शक्वर्यतिशक्वरी च धृतिश्चातिधृतिस्तथा
Trishtubh and Jagati, as well as Atijagati; Shakvari, Atishakvari, Dhriti, and Atidhriti likewise—
विराट्प्रस्तारपङ्क्तिश्च कृतिः प्रकृतिराकृतिः । विकृतिः सकृतिश्चैवाक्षरपङ्क्तिस्तथैव च
Virat, Prastara, Pankti, Kriti, Prakriti, Akrti, Vikriti, Sakriti, and Aksharapankti as well—
भूर्भुवः स्वरितिच्छन्दस्तथा ज्योतिष्मती स्मृतम् । इत्येतानि च छन्दांसि कीर्तितानि महामुने
Bhur, Bhuvah, Svar, the Itic meter, and Jyotishmati are remembered; these meters are thus enumerated, O great sage.
दैवतानि शृणु प्राज्ञ तेषामेवानुपूर्वशः । आग्नेयं प्रथमं प्रोक्तं प्राजापत्यं द्वितीयकम्
Hear, O wise one, the deities in their proper order: Agneya is declared first, Prajapatya second—
तृतीयं च तथा सौम्यमीशानं च चतुर्थकम् । सावित्रं पञ्चमं प्रोक्तं षष्ठमादित्यदैवतम्
The third is Saumya, Ishana is the fourth; Savitri is declared fifth, the sixth is Aditya's deity.
बार्हस्पत्यं सप्तमं तु मैत्रावरुणमष्टमम् । नवमं भगदैवत्यं दशमं चार्यमेश्वरम्
Barhaspatya is the seventh, Maitravaruna the eighth; the ninth is Bhagadaivata, the tenth is Aryameshvara.
गणेशमेकादशकं त्वाष्ट्रं द्वादशकं स्मृतम् । पौष्णं त्रयोदशं प्रोक्तमैन्द्राग्नं च चतुर्दशम्
Ganesha is the eleventh, Tvashtra is remembered as the twelfth; Paushna is declared the thirteenth, Indragni the fourteenth.
वायव्यं पञ्चदशकं वामदैव्यं च षोडशम् । मैत्रावरुणिदैवत्यं प्रोक्तं सप्तदशाक्षरम्
Vayavya is the fifteenth, Vamadaivya the sixteenth; Maitravaruni is declared the seventeenth syllable deity.
अष्टादशं वैश्वदेवमूनविंशं तु मातृकम् । वैष्णवं विंशतितमं वसुदैवतमीरितम्
The eighteenth is Vaishvadeva, the nineteenth is Matrika; Vaishnava is the twentieth, Vasudaivata is proclaimed.
एकविंशतिसंख्याकं द्वाविंशं रुद्रदैवतम् । त्रयोविंशं च कौबेरमाश्विनं तत्त्वसंख्यकम्
Ekavimsha is the twenty-first, Dvavimsha is the Rudra deity; Trayovimsha is Kubera, Ashvina is the principle count.
चतुर्विंशतिवर्णानां देवतानां च सङ्ग्रहः । कथितः परमश्रेष्ठो महापापैकशोधनः । यदाकर्णनमात्रेण साङ्गं जाप्यफलं मुने
The collection of the twenty-four syllables and their deities has been described as supremely excellent, the sole purifier of great sins; merely by hearing it in its entirety, O sage, one attains the fruit of recitation.
गायत्रिशक्त्यादिप्रतिपादनम् श्रीनारायण उवाच वर्णानां शक्तयः काश्च ताः शृणुष्व महामुने । वामदेवी प्रिया सत्या विश्वा भद्रविलासिनी
The Powers of Gāyatrī and Others Śrī Nārāyaṇa said: Hear now, O great sage, the powers of the syllables: Vāmadevī, Priyā, Satyā, Viśvā, Bhadravilāsinī.
प्रभावती जया शान्ता कान्ता दुर्गा सरस्वती । विद्रुमा च विशालेशा व्यापिनी विमला तथा
Prabhāvatī, Jayā, Śāntā, Kāntā, Durgā, Sarasvatī, Vidrumā, Viśāleśā, Vyāpinī, and also Vimalā.
तमोऽपहारिणी सूक्ष्मा विश्वयोनिर्जया वशा । पद्मालया परा शोभा भद्रा च त्रिपदा स्मृता
The remover of darkness, Sūkṣmā, the source of the universe, Jayā, Vaśā, Padmālayā, Parā, Śobhā, Bhadrā, and the one called Tripadā.
चतुर्विंशतिवर्णानां शक्तयः समुदाहृताः । अतः परं वर्णवर्णान्व्याहरामि यथातथम्
These are the powers of the twenty-four syllables as enumerated; now, I will properly describe the colors of the syllables.
चम्पका अतसीपुष्पसन्निभं विद्रुमं तथा । स्फटिकाकारकं चैव पद्मपुष्पसमप्रभम्
Like the campaka and atasi flowers, like coral, like crystal, and like the radiance of a lotus blossom.
तरुणादित्यसङ्काशं शङ्खकुन्देन्दुसन्निभम् । प्रवालपद्यपत्राभं पद्मरागसमप्रभम्
Resembling the young sun, like conch, jasmine, and the moon; like the hue of tender leaves and the brilliance of padmarāga gem.
इन्द्रनीलमणिप्रख्यं मौक्तिकं कुङ्कुमप्रभम् । अञ्जनाभं च रक्तं च वैदूर्यं क्षौद्रसन्निभम्
Like the luster of indranīla gem, pearl, and saffron; like collyrium, red, like vaidūrya, and resembling honey.
हारिद्रं कुन्ददुग्धाभं रविकान्तिसमप्रभम् । शुकपुच्छनिभं तद्वच्छतपत्रनिभं तथा
Like turmeric, like the whiteness of jasmine milk, like the brilliance of the sun; like the tail of a parrot, and likewise like the leaf of a śatapatra.
केतकीपुष्पसंकाशं मल्लिकाकुसुमप्रभम् । करवीरश्च इत्येते क्रमेण परिकीर्तिताः
Like the ketakī flower, like the radiance of jasmine blossoms, and like the karavīra flower—these have been described in order.
वर्णाः प्रोक्ताश्च वर्णानां महापापविशोधनाः । पृथिव्यापस्तथा तेजो वायुराकाश एव च
The colors of the syllables have been spoken, which purify great sins; earth, water, fire, air, and also space.
गन्धो रसश्च रूपं च शब्दः स्पर्शस्तथैव च । उपस्थं पायुपादं च पाणी वागपि च क्रमात्
Scent, taste, form, sound, and touch; the generative organ, anus, feet, hands, and speech, in order.
