किं मया बहु वक्तव्यं स्थाने संशयवर्जिते । सेवनीयं पदाम्भोजं भगवत्या निरन्तरम्
'Why should I say much more, where there is no room for doubt? The lotus feet of the Goddess are to be served without ceasing.'
नातः परतरं किञ्चिदधिकं जगतीतले । सेवनीया परा देवी निर्गुणा सगुणाथवा
'There is nothing higher or greater than this on earth; the supreme Goddess is to be served, whether without qualities or with qualities.'
श्रीनारायण उवाच इति तस्य वचः श्रुत्वा राजर्षेर्धार्मिकस्य च । प्रसन्नहृदयाः सर्वे गताः स्वस्वनिकेतनम्
Śrī Nārāyaṇa said: Hearing the words of that royal sage, righteous and virtuous, all departed to their own dwellings with gladdened hearts.
एवंप्रभावा सा देवी तत्पूजायाः फलं कियत् । अस्तीति केन प्रष्टव्यं वक्तव्यं वा न केनचित्
'Such is the power of that Goddess; who can ask or speak of the extent of the fruit of her worship?'
येषां तु जन्मसाफल्यं तेषां श्रद्धा तु जायते । येषां तु जन्मसाङ्कर्यं तेषां श्रद्धा न जायते
For those whose birth is truly fruitful, faith arises; but for those whose birth is confused, faith does not arise.
मध्याह्नसंध्यावर्णनम् श्रीनारायण उवाच अथातः श्रूयतां ब्रह्मन् सन्ध्यां माध्याह्निकीं शुभाम् । यदनुष्ठानतोऽपूर्वं जायतेऽत्युत्तमं फलम्
The midday Sandhya is now described. Shri Narayana said: Now, O Brahman, listen to the auspicious midday Sandhya. By its observance, an unprecedented and most excellent result is obtained.
सावित्रीं युवतीं श्वेतवर्णां चैव त्रिलोचनाम् । वरदां चाक्षमालाढ्यां त्रिशूलाभयहस्तकाम्
One should meditate on Savitri as a youthful woman, white in color, with three eyes, bestowing boons, adorned with a rosary, holding a trident and the gesture of fearlessness.
वृषारूढां यजुर्वेदसंहितां रुद्रदेवताम् । तमोगुणयुतां चैव भुवर्लोकव्यवस्थिताम्
She is mounted on a bull, is the embodiment of the Yajurveda, is the deity of Rudra, endowed with the quality of darkness, and is established in the Bhuvarloka.
आदित्यमार्गसंचारकर्त्रीं मायां नमाम्यहम् । आदिदेवीमथ ध्यात्वाऽऽचमनादि च पूर्ववत्
I bow to Maya, who causes the movement along the path of the sun; having meditated on the primordial goddess, one should then perform achamana and other rites as before.
अथ चार्घ्यप्रकरणं पुष्पाणि चिनुयात्ततः । तदलाभे बिल्वपत्रं तोयेन मिश्रयेत्ततः
Then, for the offering of arghya, one should gather flowers; if these are unavailable, one should mix bilva leaves with water.
ऊर्ध्वं च सूर्याभिमुखं क्षिप्त्वार्घ्यं प्रतिपादयेत् । प्रातःसन्ध्यादिवत्सर्वमुपसंहारपूर्वकम्
Then, facing the sun, one should offer the arghya upwards; everything should be concluded as in the morning Sandhya.
मध्याह्ने केचिदिच्छन्ति सावित्रीं तु तदित्यृचम् । असम्प्रदायं तत्कर्म कार्यहानिस्तु जायते
Some wish to recite the Savitri at midday, but that is not the traditional method; if done without proper transmission, the act becomes fruitless.
कारणं सन्ध्ययोश्चात्र मन्देहा नाम राक्षसाः । भक्षितुं सूर्यमिच्छन्ति कारणं श्रुतिचोदितम्
The reason for the two Sandhyas is this: there are demons called Mandehas who wish to devour the sun; this is stated in the scriptures.
अतस्तु कारणाद्विप्रः सन्ध्यां कुर्यात्प्रयत्नतः । सन्ध्ययोरुभयोर्नित्यं गायत्र्या प्रणवेन च
Therefore, for this reason, a Brahmin should perform Sandhya with effort; at both Sandhyas, always with the Gayatri and the Pranava.
अम्भस्तु प्रक्षिपेत्तेन नान्यथा श्रुतिघातकः । आकृष्णेनेति मन्त्रेण पुष्पैर्वाम्बुविमिश्रितम्
One should pour water with this, not otherwise, for to do so would violate the scriptures; with the mantra 'Akrishnena,' with flowers or mixed with water.
अलाभे बिल्वदूर्वादिपत्रेणोक्तेन पूर्वकम् । अर्ध्यं दद्यात्प्रयत्नेन साङ्गं सन्ध्याफलं लभेत्
If flowers are unavailable, one should use bilva, durva, or other prescribed leaves as before; one should offer arghya with care and thus obtain the full fruit of Sandhya.
अत्रैव तर्पणं वक्ष्ये शृणु देवर्षिसत्तम । भुवः पुनः पूरुषं तु तर्पयामि नमो नमः
Now I will explain the rite of tarpan here; listen, O best of divine sages. 'On the Bhuvarloka again, I satisfy the Purusha; obeisance, obeisance.'
यजुर्वेदं तर्पयामि मण्डलं तर्पयामि च । हिरण्यगर्भं च तथान्तरात्मानं तथैव च
I satisfy the Yajurveda, I satisfy the Mandala, and likewise Hiranyagarbha and the inner self.
सावित्रीं च ततो देवमातरं साङ्कृतिं तथा । सन्ध्यां तथैव युवतीं रुद्राणीं नीमृजां तथा
Then I satisfy Savitri, the divine mother, Sankriti, Sandhya, the youthful one, Rudrani, and Nimrija.
सर्वार्थानां सिद्धिकरीं सर्वमन्त्रार्थसिद्धिदाम् । भूर्भुवः स्वः पूरुषं तु इति मध्याह्नतर्पणम्
She who grants success in all aims, who bestows the fulfillment of all mantras' purposes—thus, the midday tarpan is performed with 'Bhur Bhuvah Svah Purusha.'
उदुत्यमिति सूक्तेन सूर्योपस्थानमेव च । चित्रं देवानामिति च सूर्योपस्थानमाचरेत्
With the hymn 'Udu-tyam,' one should perform the worship of the sun; and also with 'Chitram Devanam,' one should perform the worship of the sun.
ततो जपं प्रकुर्वीत मन्त्रसाधनतत्परः । जपस्यापि प्रकारं तु वक्ष्यामि शृणु नारद
Then, being intent on the practice of mantra, one should perform japa; I will now explain the method of japa—listen, O Narada.
कृत्वोत्तानौ करौ प्रातः सायं चाधः करौ तथा । मध्याह्ने हृदयस्थौ तु कृत्वा जपमुदीरयेत्
Placing the hands upward in the morning and evening, and downward likewise, and at midday placing them over the heart, one should recite the mantra.
पर्वद्वयमनामिक्याः कनिष्ठादिक्रमेण तु । तर्जनीमूलपर्यन्तं करमाला प्रकीर्तिता
The two joints of the finger, starting from the little finger in order, up to the base of the index finger, are called the counting beads of the hand.
गोघ्नः पितृघ्नो मातृघ्नो भ्रूणहा गुरुतल्पगः । ब्रह्मस्वक्षेत्रहारी च यश्च विप्रः सुरां पिबेत्
A killer of cows, a killer of father, a killer of mother, a destroyer of embryos, one who violates the teacher's bed, one who steals the property of Brahmins, and a Brahmin who drinks liquor—
स गायत्र्या सहस्रेण पूतो भवति मानवः । मानसं वाचिकं पापं विषयेन्द्रियसङ्गजम्
Such a person becomes purified by a thousand recitations of the Gayatri; mental and spoken sins arising from contact with sense objects—
तत्किल्बिषं नाशयति त्रीणि जन्मानि मानवः । गायत्रीं यो न जानाति वृथा तस्य परिश्रमः
That sin is destroyed for three births; one who does not know the Gayatri, his effort is in vain.
पठेच्च चतुरो वेदान् गायत्रीं चैकतो जपेत् । वेदानां चावृतेस्तद्वद्गायत्रीजप उत्तमः
Even if one recites all four Vedas, but chants the Gayatri only once, the repetition of the Gayatri is superior to the repetition of the Vedas.
इति मध्याह्नसन्ध्यायाः प्रकारः कीर्तितो मया । अतः परं प्रवक्ष्यामि ब्रह्मयज्ञविधिक्रमम्
Thus the method of midday Sandhya has been described by me; next I will explain the procedure of Brahma-yajna.
ब्रह्मयज्ञादिकीर्तनम् श्रीनारायण उवाच त्रिराचम्य द्विजः पूर्वं द्विर्मार्जनमथाचरेत् । उपस्पृशेत्सव्यपाणिं पादौ च प्रोक्षयेत्ततः
The praise of Brahma-yajna. Shri Narayana said: The twice-born should first sip water three times, then perform cleansing twice; then touch the right hand and feet, and sprinkle them.
