उदङ्मुखो दिवा कुर्याद्रात्रौ चेद्दक्षिणामुखः । तत आच्छाद्य विण्मूत्रं लोष्ठपर्णतृणादिभिः
Facing north by day, and south by night, then covering the urine or feces with a clod, leaf, grass, or the like.
गृहीतलिङ्ग उत्थाय स गच्छेद्वारिसन्निधौ । पात्रे जलं गहीत्वा तु गच्छेदन्यत्र चैव हि
After cleansing the organ and rising, one should go to the vicinity of water, take water in a vessel, and then go elsewhere.
गृहीत्वा मृत्तिकां कूलाच्छ्वेतां ब्राह्मणसत्तमः । रक्तां पीतां तथा कृष्णां गृह्णीयुश्चान्यवर्णकाः
Taking white clay from the riverbank, O best of Brahmins, or red, yellow, or black, or of any other color.
अथवा या यत्र देशे सैव ग्राह्या द्विजोत्तमैः । अन्तर्जलाद्देवगृहाद्वल्मीकान्मूषकोत्करात्
Or, whatever is available in that place, that alone should be taken by the best of twice-born—from within water, from a temple, from an anthill, or from a mouse mound.
कृतशौचावशिष्टाच्च न ग्राह्याः पञ्चमृत्तिकाः । मूत्रात्तु द्विगुणं शौचे मैथुने त्रिगुणं स्मृतम्
But clay left over from previous purification should not be taken; for urine, double the amount is prescribed, and for intercourse, triple the amount.
एका लिङ्गे करे तिस्र उभयोर्मृद्द्वयं स्मृतम् । मूत्रशौचं समाख्यातं शौचे तद् द्विगुणं स्मृतम्
For one organ, one lump in the hand; for both, two lumps are prescribed; this is declared for purification after urine, and for other purification, double that amount is prescribed.
विट्शौचे लिङ्गदेशे तु प्रदद्यान्मृत्तिकाद्वयम् । पञ्चापाने दशैकस्मिन्नुभयोः सप्त मृत्तिकाः
For cleansing after defecation, one should apply two lumps of clay at the site of the organ; for urination, five lumps on one side, ten on the other, and for both together, seven lumps of clay.
वामपादं पुरस्कृत्य पश्चाद्दक्षिणमेव च । प्रत्येकं च चतुर्वारं मृत्तिकां लेपयेत्सुधीः
Placing the left foot forward and then the right, the wise should smear clay four times each.
एवं शौचं गृहस्थस्य द्विगुणं ब्रह्मचारिणः । त्रिगुणं वानप्रस्थस्य यतीनां च चतुर्गुणम्
Thus, the cleansing prescribed for a householder is doubled for a celibate, tripled for a forest-dweller, and quadrupled for ascetics.
आर्द्रामलकमाना तु मृत्तिका शौचकर्मणि । प्रत्येकं तु सदा ग्राह्या नातो न्यूना कदाचन
The measure of clay for cleansing should be equal to a moist amalaki fruit; this amount should always be taken for each act, never less.
एतद्दिवा स्याद्विट्शौचं तदर्धं निशि कीर्तितम् । आतुरस्य तदर्धं तु मार्गस्थस्य तदर्धकम्
This cleansing is prescribed for daytime after defecation; at night, half that amount is stated; for the sick, half again; for one traveling, half of that.
स्त्रीशूद्राणामशक्तानां बालानां शौचकर्मणि । यथा गन्धक्षयः स्यात्तु तथा कुर्यादसंख्यकम्
For women, Shudras, the infirm, and children in cleansing, one should perform as many applications as needed until the odor is removed.
गन्धलेपक्षयो यावत्तावच्छौचं विधीयते । सर्वेषामेव वर्णानामित्याह भगवान्मनुः
Cleansing is prescribed for all castes until the odor is eliminated, so declares the venerable Manu.
वामहस्तेन शौचं तु कुर्याद्वै दक्षिणेन न । नाभेरधो वामहस्तो नाभेरूर्ध्वं तु दक्षिणः
Cleansing should be done with the left hand, not the right; below the navel, use the left hand, above the navel, use the right.
शौचकर्मणि विज्ञेयो नान्यथा द्विजपुङ्गवैः । जलपात्रं न गृह्णीयाद्विण्मूत्रोत्सर्जने बुधः
In the act of cleansing, this should be understood by the foremost twice-born; a wise person should not take a water vessel while evacuating urine or feces.
गृह्णीयाद्यदि मोहेन प्रायश्चित्तं चरेत्ततः । मोहाद्वाप्यथवाऽऽलस्यान्न कुर्याच्छौचमात्मनः
If one takes it out of ignorance, one should perform expiation; whether from ignorance or laziness, one should not neglect one's own cleansing.
जलाहारस्त्रिरात्रः स्यात्ततो जापाच्च शुध्यति । देशकालद्रव्यशक्तिस्वोपपत्तीश्च सर्वशः
Abstaining from water for three nights is prescribed; after that, purification is achieved by recitation, considering place, time, substance, and one's own capacity.
ज्ञात्वा शौचं प्रकर्तव्यमालस्यं नात्र धारयेत् । पुरीषोत्सर्जने कुर्याद् गण्डूषान्द्वादशैव तु
Knowing this, cleansing should be performed; one should not harbor laziness here; after defecation, one should perform twelve mouth rinses.
चतुरो मूत्रविक्षेपे नातो न्यूनान्कदाचन । अधोमुखं नरः कृत्वा त्यजेत्तं वामतः शनैः
Four rinses are prescribed after urination, never less; a man should face downward and evacuate gently to the left.
आचम्य च ततः कुर्याद्दन्तधावनमादरात् । कण्टकिक्षीरवृक्षोत्थं द्वादशाङ्गुलमव्रणम्
After sipping water, one should carefully clean the teeth; using a twig from thorny or milky trees, twelve finger-lengths long and uninjured.
कनिष्ठिकाग्रवत्स्थूलं पूर्वार्धे कृतकूर्चकम् । करञ्जोदुम्बरौ चूतः कदम्बो लोध्रचम्पकौ । बदरीति द्रुमाश्चेति प्रोक्ता दन्तप्रधावने
With the tip of the little finger, thick in the first half, made into a brush; the trees Karanja, Udumbara, Mango, Kadamba, Lodhra, Champaka, and Badari are declared suitable for tooth cleaning.
अन्नाद्याय व्यूहध्वंसे सोमो राजायमागमत् । स मे मुखं प्रक्षाल्य तेजसा च भगेन च
For food and its destruction, Soma, the king, arrived; he washed my mouth with his radiance and power.
आयुर्बलं यशो वर्चः प्रजाः पशुवसूनि च । ब्रह्मप्रज्ञां च मेधां च त्वन्नो देहि वनस्पते
Grant me, O plant, long life, strength, fame, luster, offspring, cattle, Brahma-wisdom, and intelligence from you.
अभावे दन्तकाष्ठस्य प्रतिषिद्धदिनेषु च । अपां द्वादशगण्डूषैर्विदध्याद्दन्तधावनम्
In the absence of a tooth-stick or on prohibited days, one should clean the teeth with twelve mouthfuls of water.
रवेर्दिने यः कुरुते प्राणी दन्तस्य धावनम् । सविता भक्षितस्तेन स्वकुलं तेन घातितम्
Whoever brushes their teeth during the time of the sun’s rise is as if they have consumed the sun; by this act, their entire family is destroyed.
प्रतिपद्दर्शषष्ठीषु नवम्येकादशीरवौ । दन्तानां काष्ठसंयोगाद्दहत्यासप्तमं कुलम्
On the first, sixth, ninth, and eleventh lunar days, and on Sundays, if one brushes their teeth with wood, it burns up to seven generations of their lineage.
कृत्वालं पादशौचं ह्यमलमथ जलं त्रिःपिबेद् द्विर्विमृज्य तर्जन्याङ्गुष्ठवत्या सजलमभिमृशे- न्नासिकारन्ध्रयुग्मम् । अङ्गुष्ठानामिकाभ्यां नयनयुगयुतं कर्णयुग्मं कनिष्ठा- ङ्गुष्ठाभ्यां नाभिदेशे हृदयमथ तले- नाङ्गुलीभिः शिरांसि
After thoroughly cleansing the feet, one should drink pure water three times, rinse twice, touch both nostrils with water using the thumb and forefinger, touch both eyes and both ears with the thumb and ring finger, the navel with the little finger and thumb, the heart with the palm, and the head with all the fingers.
क्षमाहात्म्यवर्णनम् श्रीनारायण उवाच (शुद्धं स्मार्तं चाचमनं पौराणं वैदिकं तथा । तान्त्रिकं श्रौतमित्याहुः षड्विधं श्रुतिचोदितम् ॥ विण्मूत्रादिकशौचं च शुद्धं च परिकीर्तितम् । स्मार्तं पौराणिकं कर्म आचान्ते विधिपूर्वकम् ॥ वैदिकं श्रौत्रमित्यादि ब्रह्मयज्ञादिपूर्वकम् । अस्त्रविद्यादिकं कर्म तान्त्रिको विधिरुच्यते ॥) स्मृत्वा चोङ्कारगायत्रीं निबध्नीयाच्छिखां तथा । पुनराचम्य हृदयं बाहू स्कन्धौ च संस्पृशेत्
Remembering the sacred syllable Om and the Gayatri mantra, one should tie up the hair tuft, then perform ācamana again, and touch the heart, both arms, and shoulders.
क्षुते निष्ठीवने चैव दन्तोच्छिष्टे तथानृते । पतितानां च सम्भाषे दक्षिणं श्रवणं स्पृशेत्
After sneezing, spitting, touching the teeth after eating, speaking untruth, or conversing with the fallen, one should touch the right ear.
अग्निरापश्च वेदाश्च सोमः सूर्योऽनिलस्तथा । सर्वे नारद विप्रस्य कर्णे तिष्ठन्ति दक्षिणे
O Nārada, fire, water, the Vedas, Soma, the sun, and the wind—all reside in the right ear of a brāhmaṇa.
