I worship Surabhi, the goddess, pure in form and purifying, who fulfills all desires of devotees, by whom the whole universe is purified.
A twice-born may worship Surabhi in a pot, on the head of a cow, at the tying post, in a Śālagrāma, in water or fire.
Whoever worships Surabhi, with devotion, on the day after the festival of lamps, in the morning, becomes worthy of worship on earth.
Once, in the three worlds, during the Varāha incarnation by Viṣṇu’s Māyā, Surabhi withheld milk, and the gods were troubled.
They went to Brahmaloka and praised Brahmā; by his command, Indra praised Surabhi.
Purandara said: Salutations to the goddess, the great goddess, and to Surabhi; salutations again and again. Salutations to the seed-form of cows, and to you, Mother of the world.
Salutations again and again to her who is dear to Radha, to her who is a portion of Lakshmi; salutations again and again to her who is beloved of Krishna, to the mother of cows.
Salutations again and again to her whose form is the wish-fulfilling tree, who is always supreme among all, who grants milk, who bestows wealth, and who gives wisdom.
Salutations again and again to the auspicious one, to Subhadra, to the giver of cows; salutations to Yashoda, to the giver of fame, to the giver of righteousness.
By merely hearing this hymn, the Mother of the Universe became pleased and delighted, and she appeared there itself in the world of Brahma, eternal.
After granting to Mahendra the desired boon, rare to obtain, she went to Goloka, and the gods and others returned to their homes.
O Narada, the whole world suddenly became filled with milk; from that milk came ghee, then sacrifice, and then the joy of the gods.
Whoever recites this highly meritorious hymn with devotion becomes possessed of cows, wealth, fame, and sons.
He is as if bathed in all sacred waters and initiated in all sacrifices; enjoying happiness in this world, he finally goes to Krishna's abode.
He dwells there for a long time, serving Krishna; he is not born again, and there he becomes a son of Brahma.
Thus ends the forty-ninth chapter, entitled 'The Description of the Story of Surabhi,' in the Ninth Book of the great Purana Srimad Devi Bhagavata, consisting of eighteen thousand verses.
Description of the method of the goddess's enclosure worship.
Narada said: I have heard the entire account of the primal natures, just as it is; by hearing which, a being is freed from the bondage of birth and worldly existence.
Now I wish to hear the secret, concealed by the Vedas, and the ritual for Radha and Durga, as prescribed by the scriptures.
Their greatness has been described by you as supreme; hearing of it, whose mind, O best of sages, would not be absorbed in them?
Of whom the entire universe, both moving and unmoving, is a portion and subject; by devotion to whom liberation is attained—tell now that method.
Sri Narayana said: Listen, Narada, I will tell you the secret prescribed by the scriptures, which has not been revealed to anyone, the essence of essences, the highest of the high.
Having heard it, it should not be spoken to another, for it is extremely secret, concerning the consciousness of the Primordial Nature at the origin of the universe.
A pair of powers arose, presiding over life and intellect, always the rulers and inspirers of all living beings.
Therefore, for their grace, one should always serve both of them; now, Nārada, listen with devotion to the mantra of Rādhikā first.
That supreme mantra, eternally worshipped by Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and others, is 'Śrī Rādhe' in the dative case, the foremost consort of Agni.
This six-syllabled great mantra reveals dharma and other meanings; it contains the seed of Māyā and is known as the wish-fulfilling gem.
Even with a thousand crore mouths and a hundred crore tongues, the greatness of this mantra cannot truly be described.
Śrī Kṛṣṇa, devoted to bhakti, first received this mantra from the original Goddess in Goloka, within the circle of the rāsa dance.
Viṣṇu was instructed by Him, then Virāṭ Brahmā by Viṣṇu, then Dharma by Brahmā, and then I; this is the lineage.
