तस्य नागभयं नास्ति तस्य वंशोद्भवस्य च । विषं भवेत्सुधातुल्यं सिद्धस्तोत्रो यदा भवेत्
He will have no fear of serpents, nor will his descendants; for him, poison becomes like nectar, when the hymn is perfected.
पञ्चलक्षजपेनैव सिद्धस्तोत्रो भवेन्नरः । सर्पशायी भवेत्सोऽपि निश्चितं सर्पवाहनः
By reciting it five hundred thousand times, a man perfects the hymn; he will certainly become one who lies on serpents, or one who rides serpents.
सुरभ्युपाख्यानवर्णनम् नारद उवाच का वा सा सुरभिर्देवी गोलोकादागता च या । तज्जन्मचरितं ब्रह्मञ्छ्रोतुमिच्छामि यत्नतः
Nārada said: Who is that goddess Surabhi, who came from Goloka? O Brahman, I wish to hear her birth and deeds, with great attention.
श्रीनारायणाय उवाच गवामधिष्ठातृदेवी गवामाद्या गवां प्रसूः । गवां प्रधाना सुरभिर्गोलोके सा समुद्भवा
Śrī Nārāyaṇa said: She is the presiding goddess of cows, the first among cows, the mother of cows; Surabhi, the chief of cows, was born in Goloka.
सर्वादिसृष्टेश्चरितं कथयामि निशामय । बभूव तेन तज्जन्म पुरा वृन्दावने वने
I will tell you the story of the creation of all beings; listen. Long ago, her birth took place in the forest of Vrindavana.
एकदा राधिकानाथो राधया सह कौतुकी । गोपाङ्गनापरिवृतः पुण्यं वृन्दावनं ययौ
Once, the Lord of Rādhikā, together with Rādhā, surrounded by the gopī maidens, went to the holy Vrindavana out of delight.
सहसा तत्र रहसि विजहार स कौतुकात् । बभूव क्षीरपानेच्छा तस्य स्वेच्छामयस्य च
There, in a secluded place, he sported playfully; and, being of independent will, he suddenly desired to drink milk.
ससृजे सुरभिं देवीं लीलया वामपार्श्वतः । वत्सयुक्तां दुग्धवतीं वत्सो नाम मनोरथः
By his play, he created the goddess Surabhi from his left side, with a calf, full of milk, and the calf was named Manoratha.
दृष्ट्वा सवत्सां श्रीदामा नवभाण्डे दुदोह च । क्षीरं सुधातिरिक्तं च जन्ममृत्युजराहरम्
Śrīdāmā, seeing the calf, milked it into a new vessel; the milk was more than nectar, and removed birth, death, and old age.
तदुत्थं च पयः स्वादु पपौ गोपीपतिः स्वयम् । सरो बभूव पयसां भाण्डविस्रंसनेन च
The lord of the cowherds himself drank the sweet milk that arose, and a lake was formed from the spilling of the vessels.
दीर्घं च विस्तृतं चैव परितः शतयोजनम् । गोलोकेऽयं प्रसिद्धश्च सोऽपि क्षीरसरोवरः
That lake was long and wide, spanning a hundred yojanas all around; this famous lake of milk exists in Goloka.
गोपिकानां च राधायाः क्रीडावापी बभूव सा । रत्नेन्द्ररचिता पूर्णं भूता चापीश्वरेच्छया
For the gopīs and for Rādhā, it became a play-pool, crafted with jewels and gems, filled completely and brought forth by the will of the Lord.
बभूव कामधेनूनां सहसा लक्षकोटयः । यावन्तस्तत्र गोपाश्च सुरभ्या लोमकूपतः
Suddenly, millions upon millions of wish-fulfilling cows appeared; as many as there were cowherds, so many arose from Surabhi’s pores.
तासां पुत्राश्च बहवः सम्बभूवुरसंख्यकाः । कथिता च गवां सृष्टिस्तया च पूरितं जगत्
Their sons were countless, coming forth in great numbers; thus the creation of cows was described, and the world was filled by them.
पूजां चकार भगवान् सुरभ्याश्च पुरा मुने । ततो बभूव तत्पूजा त्रिषु लोकेषु दुर्लभा
The Blessed Lord once performed worship of Surabhi, O sage; since then, that worship became rare in the three worlds.
दीपान्वितापरदिने श्रीकृष्णस्याज्ञया हरेः । बभूव सुरभिः पूज्या धर्मवक्त्रादिदं श्रुतम्
On the day after the festival of lamps, by the command of Śrī Kṛṣṇa, Surabhi became worthy of worship, as heard from the mouth of Dharma.
ध्यानं स्तोत्रं मूलमन्त्रं यद्यत्यूजाविधिक्रमम् । वेदोक्तं च महाभाग निबोध कथयामि ते
Meditation, praise, root-mantra, and whatever ritual is prescribed for worship, as stated in the Vedas, O noble one, listen as I tell you.
ॐ सुरभ्यै नम इति मन्त्रस्तस्याः षडक्षरः । सिद्धो लक्षजपेनैव भक्तानां कल्पपादपः
The mantra 'Om surabhyai namah' is her six-syllabled mantra; it is perfected by reciting it a hundred thousand times, and grants all desires to devotees.
ध्यानं यजुर्वेदगीतं तस्याः पूजा च सर्वतः । ऋद्धिदा वृद्धिदा चैव मुक्तिदा सर्वकामदा
Her meditation is sung in the Yajur Veda, and her worship is universal; she grants prosperity, growth, liberation, and fulfills all desires.
लक्ष्मीस्वरूपां परमां राधासहचरीं पराम् । गवामधिष्ठातृदेवीं गवामाद्यां गवां प्रसूम्
I meditate upon the supreme form of Lakṣmī, the exalted companion of Rādhā, the presiding goddess of cows, the first among cows, the mother of cows.
पवित्ररूपां पूतां च भक्तानां सर्वकामदाम् । यया पूतं सर्वविश्वं तां देवीं सुरभिं भजे
I worship Surabhi, the goddess, pure in form and purifying, who fulfills all desires of devotees, by whom the whole universe is purified.
घटे वा धेनुशिरसि बन्धस्तम्भे गवामपि । शालग्रामे जलाग्नौ वा सुरभिं पूजयेद् द्विजः
A twice-born may worship Surabhi in a pot, on the head of a cow, at the tying post, in a Śālagrāma, in water or fire.
दीपान्वितापरदिने पूर्वाह्ने भक्तिसंयुतः । यः पूजयेच्च सुरभिं स च पूज्यो भवेद्भुवि
Whoever worships Surabhi, with devotion, on the day after the festival of lamps, in the morning, becomes worthy of worship on earth.
एकदा त्रिषु लोकेषु वाराहे विष्णुमायया । क्षीरं जहार सुरभिश्चिन्तिताश्च सुरादयः
Once, in the three worlds, during the Varāha incarnation by Viṣṇu’s Māyā, Surabhi withheld milk, and the gods were troubled.
ते गत्वा ब्रह्मलोके च ब्रह्माणं तुष्टुवुस्तदा । तदाज्ञया च सुरभिं तुष्टाव पाकशासनः
They went to Brahmaloka and praised Brahmā; by his command, Indra praised Surabhi.
पुरन्दर उवाच नमो देव्यै महादेव्यै सुरभ्यै च नमो नमः । गवां बीजस्वरूपायै नमस्ते जगदम्बिके
Purandara said: Salutations to the goddess, the great goddess, and to Surabhi; salutations again and again. Salutations to the seed-form of cows, and to you, Mother of the world.
नमो राधाप्रियायै च पद्मांशायै नमो नमः । नमः कृष्णप्रियायै च गवां मात्रे नमो नमः
Salutations again and again to her who is dear to Radha, to her who is a portion of Lakshmi; salutations again and again to her who is beloved of Krishna, to the mother of cows.
कल्पवृक्षस्वरूपायै सर्वेषां सततं परे । क्षीरदायै धनदायै बुद्धिदायै नमो नमः
Salutations again and again to her whose form is the wish-fulfilling tree, who is always supreme among all, who grants milk, who bestows wealth, and who gives wisdom.
शुभायै च सुभद्रायै गोप्रदायै नमो नमः । यशोदायै कीर्तिदायै धर्मदायै नमो नमः
Salutations again and again to the auspicious one, to Subhadra, to the giver of cows; salutations to Yashoda, to the giver of fame, to the giver of righteousness.
स्तोत्रश्रवणमात्रेण तुष्टा हृष्टा जगत्प्रसूः । आविर्बभूव तत्रैव ब्रह्मलोके सनातनी
By merely hearing this hymn, the Mother of the Universe became pleased and delighted, and she appeared there itself in the world of Brahma, eternal.
