Those who are deprived of Lakshmi will always have fear of serpents; but you yourself are all Lakshmi, dwelling in Vaikuntha, the abode of lotuses.
The venerable sage Jaratkaru, a portion of Narayana, by his austerity, brilliance, and mind, created you, O Mother.
For our protection, therefore, you were invoked by his mind; by the power of mind, O Goddess, you are the accomplished yogini, manifesting from your own self.
Therefore, O Goddess, you are worshipped and praised by the mind; those gods who worship you constantly and devotedly with their minds—
Therefore, the wise call you the goddess of the mind; O Goddess, you are the embodiment of truth, ever devoted to eternal truth.
Whoever contemplates you constantly, that person attains you, O Supreme One; and Indra, having praised you with his mind and received the boon of a sister—
He returned to his own abode, adorned and accompanied by his retinue; and that goddess remained for a long time in her father's house with her son.
Ever honored and worshipped by her brothers, respected and praised everywhere; O Brahman, Surabhi came from Goloka and was duly worshipped there.
Having bathed her with milk, she worshipped her with great reverence; and revealed all secret and most rare knowledge.
Having been worshipped by her, the gods returned again to heaven; one should worship and recite the Indra-hymn, the auspicious seed of the Manasa hymn.
He will have no fear of serpents, nor will his descendants; for him, poison becomes like nectar, when the hymn is perfected.
By reciting it five hundred thousand times, a man perfects the hymn; he will certainly become one who lies on serpents, or one who rides serpents.
Nārada said: Who is that goddess Surabhi, who came from Goloka? O Brahman, I wish to hear her birth and deeds, with great attention.
Śrī Nārāyaṇa said: She is the presiding goddess of cows, the first among cows, the mother of cows; Surabhi, the chief of cows, was born in Goloka.
I will tell you the story of the creation of all beings; listen. Long ago, her birth took place in the forest of Vrindavana.
Once, the Lord of Rādhikā, together with Rādhā, surrounded by the gopī maidens, went to the holy Vrindavana out of delight.
There, in a secluded place, he sported playfully; and, being of independent will, he suddenly desired to drink milk.
By his play, he created the goddess Surabhi from his left side, with a calf, full of milk, and the calf was named Manoratha.
Śrīdāmā, seeing the calf, milked it into a new vessel; the milk was more than nectar, and removed birth, death, and old age.
The lord of the cowherds himself drank the sweet milk that arose, and a lake was formed from the spilling of the vessels.
That lake was long and wide, spanning a hundred yojanas all around; this famous lake of milk exists in Goloka.
For the gopīs and for Rādhā, it became a play-pool, crafted with jewels and gems, filled completely and brought forth by the will of the Lord.
Suddenly, millions upon millions of wish-fulfilling cows appeared; as many as there were cowherds, so many arose from Surabhi’s pores.
Their sons were countless, coming forth in great numbers; thus the creation of cows was described, and the world was filled by them.
The Blessed Lord once performed worship of Surabhi, O sage; since then, that worship became rare in the three worlds.
On the day after the festival of lamps, by the command of Śrī Kṛṣṇa, Surabhi became worthy of worship, as heard from the mouth of Dharma.
Meditation, praise, root-mantra, and whatever ritual is prescribed for worship, as stated in the Vedas, O noble one, listen as I tell you.
The mantra 'Om surabhyai namah' is her six-syllabled mantra; it is perfected by reciting it a hundred thousand times, and grants all desires to devotees.
Her meditation is sung in the Yajur Veda, and her worship is universal; she grants prosperity, growth, liberation, and fulfills all desires.
I meditate upon the supreme form of Lakṣmī, the exalted companion of Rādhā, the presiding goddess of cows, the first among cows, the mother of cows.
