He praised with supreme devotion and bowed again and again; he offered salutations to Shambhu, Brahma, and Kashyapa likewise.
He asked, 'How did the gods arrive?' Brahma, hearing these words, immediately responded as was appropriate.
Brahma replied, after bowing to the lotus feet of Hrishikesha: 'If the righteous wife has been abandoned, yet remains steadfast in mind—'
'Then produce a son with her, for the sake of upholding your own dharma. After producing a son in your wife, you may then renounce her, O sage.'
'But if one renounces his beloved without producing a son, out of detachment, his merit flows away, just as water flows elsewhere.'
Hearing Brahma's words, the sage Jaratkaru performed the ritual of touching the navel, with yoga and mantra.
In his mind, the foremost sage spoke to her: Jaratkaru said, 'By this union in mind, you will have a son.'
He will be foremost among those who have mastered their senses, righteous, chief among Brahmins, radiant, austere, renowned, and endowed with virtues.
He is the best among those who know the Vedas, among the wise and the yogis; and such a son, devoted to Vishnu and righteous, uplifts the family.
All the ancestors rejoice with delight simply at her birth—she who is devoted to her husband, virtuous, dear, and speaks sweetly.
She who is righteous, a mother of sons, a noble woman, a protector of the family, who bestows devotion to Hari—such a relative does not merely grant desired happiness.
If a relative is such, he is a father who shows the path of Hari; and she who bears the embryo and delivers from the womb is truly a mother.
A sister who is the embodiment of compassion, who frees from the fear of Yama, and one who gives the Vishnu mantra—such a person is a guru who bestows devotion to Vishnu.
The guru who imparts knowledge, whose wisdom is devotion to Krishna, is the one by whom the entire universe, from Brahma down to a blade of grass, is understood.
Whatever is manifest or unmanifest in the universe, whatever knowledge arises from the Vedas or from sacrifice, its essence is service to Hari.
The true essence of all principles is Hari; anything else is mere imitation. The knowledge I have given you—he who gives such knowledge is truly the master.
By knowledge one is freed from bondage; but an enemy is one who causes bondage. A guru who does not give knowledge imbued with devotion to Vishnu—
He is an enemy, a destroyer of disciples, for he does not free from bondage. Just as a mother who does not free her child from the suffering of the womb—
How can one who does not free be called a guru, a father, or a relative? The eternal path of Krishna is the form of supreme bliss.
One who does not always show that path—what kind of relative is he among men? O virtuous one, worship the supreme Brahman, the imperishable Krishna, the attribute-less one.
By serving him, the root of karma in people is destroyed. By my deception you were abandoned—please forgive this, my beloved.
Among virtuous women endowed with forgiveness, there is no anger due to their nature. I am going to Pushkara for austerity; go, O goddess, as you wish.
The desires of those unattached to the lotus feet of Shri Krishna do not bear fruit. Hearing the words of Jaratkaru, she was inwardly overcome with sorrow.
With tearful eyes and humility, she spoke to her beloved lord: 'There is truly no fault in me for being abandoned by you due to your sleep being disturbed, O master.'
'Wherever I remember you always, there you will come to me. Division among relatives is the greatest pain; division from a son is even greater.'
'Separation from the lord of life, by the departure of life itself, is the greatest of all. For a devoted wife, the husband is dearer than a hundred sons.'
Above all, women cherish what is dearest; the wise declare this to be so. Just as a single son is most beloved among sons, and as Vishnu is to the Vaishnavas.
As the single eye is precious to those with one eye, as water is to the thirsty, as food is to the hungry, and as union is to those desiring it.
As another's wealth is to thieves, as a lover is to adulterous women, as scripture is to the learned, and as trade is to merchants.
In the same way, the mind of virtuous women is always fixed upon their beloved, O Lord. Having spoken thus, the goddess fell at her master's feet with her mind.
